Panasonic tx-21s1t - 240p signals?

Post by rafianimates »

Sorry if you've heard this questions a billion times before - how can I check if my CRT TV is displaying my retro console in 240p / 15khz and not 480i?

I have a 21" CRT Panasonic tx-21s1t with a single 21 pin scart input, the manual says it's RGB. The only other relevant information I can find is "Receiving Systems PAL - I (UHF) and PAL - 60". The tv was bought around 1997, the screen has a slight curve.

Consoles I'm trying out on it are SNES, PS1 (first gen model), PS2, Gamecube. All PAL.

Should be very easy-- you can see the line flicker and pixel crawl on angular edges in 480i. If displaying 240p, everything will look still, no line flicker or pixel crawl. On a 15KHz CRT, Its quite obvious, actually.

If the OP uses RGB cables with his systems he shouldn't be seeing dot crawl at all, but when using composite, it's certainly present even with 240p signals (unless perhaps the set has an excellent comb filter or a good external one is used). This is probably a decent illustration.

Not dot crawl, as in the artifact from using composite signals, but pixel or line crawl--eg if you look at the screen you can see the illusion of scanlines moving down the screen, most easily visible on white lines running at an angle. This effect is there in true 480i whether you use RF or RGB, doesnt matter. Its an illusion created by the flickering interlaced lines.

Just blink fast while looking at the screen. Lines will disappear at 480i, but will not at 240p.

Thanks guys, you're rut, it is pretty obvious. When I started this thread I had only tested snes and psx - all successfully 240p. Have since tried a few 480i ps2 titles and I could tell straight away. I then tried megaman x collection and fantasy zone collection on the ps2, cycled through 240p, 480i etc and its very obvious there. Megaman x collection looks stunning.

Cheers for the tips.
