BVM vs Bang & Olufsen

Post by Beaps »

Hi all

I gotta Sony BVM 2010p but the depth of the thing is killing me. The picture is amazing don't get me wrong but I don't have much room. I was thinking of getting a 21' B&O as the depth on them looks ideal, but are they any good, better than the BVM?

Ideally I would love a 15khz 4:3 plasma but 40' is way to big, is there any smaller sizes that you guys know of?

Thanks as ever

B&Os have a completely different look than your BVM.

The smallest plasma I know was a 32" 16:9 screen. By LG, around 2006 or 2007.

So what's best in your opinion buddy as I value your opinion. What would you do in my circumstance?

Is there a 16' BVM that has a smaller depth do you know?

Also what's the model of that 32', would you know?

There is no 16" BVM but there are 14" models. They are not much better in terms of depth compared to the 20" though. BVMs are naturally very deep because of the input card system. PVMs are less deep since they have fixed inputs. I would try to get a 14" PVM if space is a concern.

I have a 20" BVM A and while it sits in its giant box I play all my games on a 25" B&O MX4200. The image quality is great, the unit has a low profile and looks fantastic as part of the room's decore due to its timeless design. Plus, all B&O TV's come equipped with great sound capability, so you have the perfect retro all in one unit.

Honestly I think PVM/BVM's have been hyped too much as everyone seems to want to chase the absolute theoretical best when a B&O might be a perfectly suitable alternative.

25" is the perfect size I feel, but even 28" B&O TV's from the 90's and early 2000's have a slim profile. I'll prolly get hold of an additional unit in the future, and I'll be marrying one of my units with a pair of BeoLab 6000 or 8000 speakers for even better sound.

My 17 inch JVC pro monitor is roughly the same depth as my B&O MX4200. Great thing about the Sony PVMs is that the later era models came with component/rgb input as standard. Very much hit and miss with the JVCs in this regard, but they're well worth a look.

It's not perfect, because any monitor that has built in speakers is going to interfere with the highly sensitive crt. You will also have problems because you have to have an audio signal alongside a the video signal in the wiring. This is why the BVM>all.

Bri,
I found the B&O picture way too soft for my liking, but it all depends on what you want. Happy medium is a Sony Trinitron imo.

I don't think you'd get on with a 14".

It depends. There's a section of people here who have BVMs but prefer to use a decent consumer CRT like the B&O for retro gaming. After some time with my BVM-20E1E, I've joined that camp. Even though the BVM is technically better than everything else, to me the retro game graphics just don't look very nice on them. For me, the BVM is TOO good - it's thick scanlines and almost total lack of bleeding means that the low res image doesn't come together in a cohesive way - it looks overly pixellated and harsh. With a similar sized low use Trinitron for example, you get an image that is less sharp but more pleasing to the eye, I think.

Thanks guys for all your input. If I see a B&O cheep I'll pick it up just for peace of mind although I agree it does look a bit soft from what remember seeing years ago. The JVC might be an option but I ain't never seen one in the flesh and if it's the same depth as the bvm there is no point in picking it up.

I have to agree with Fagin here though - the consumer Trinitron is a happy medium. For me, if I'm going to step down from a BVM, I want the image to be as sharp and vibrant as a consumer set is able to produce.

The 17 inch JVC that I have is around 6cm less in depth than my 20 inch PVM. With the JVCs, I found that they have a slightly oversharpened look by nature but are still very nice to look at.

I keep thinking that there will be certain content where I will prefer the B&O to the monitors, but it just never seems to actually eventuate. Nice and clean, but just not as dense an image.

Let me rephrase, it is the perfect CRT for retro gaming for people who do not suffer from OCD when it comes to image quality.
