Greetings and lists request...

Post by stratos »

Hi all!

My name is Pasquale, I'm Italian, from Caserta (a city near to Naples), 25 years old, and this is my first post in this forum! I've always loved shmups but only recently I've started to concentrate more seriously on this technical and very playable gaming genere (if we exclude my early childhood, in wich I one-credited Life Force Salamander on my nes...), so now they are for me a new great passion... I love so much Cave games (actually playing Espgaluda on my ps2) but recently also Raizing classics, I've played some gradius games in the past and the mighty Thunderforce 4, but I'm also interested in discovering new games and manufacturers... so I ask you to write a list of titles that I can afford for my ps2, psx, pc and the Dreamcast that I'm going to buy in these days (sad that I currently don't have the money to get some cabinets and pcb's...), with also some interesting titles for some dead consoles that I coul'd probably play on emulators (like that famous Gate of thunder that I absolutly WANT to play on pc engine emu or other snes 'n' genesis titles) so that I coul'd build a little "culture" about shmups. I also apologize with you all for my poor mastery of English language, hoping the chat on this board coul'd make better :) Thank you!

Hello and welcome. :)

Since you live in Europe, I might suggest the PAL release of Psyvariar Complete Edition (PS2): according to what I've heard the localization was very good, and not too expensive either. XII Stag, while I don't like it as much as Psyvariar, apparently also got similar treatment on the same system; I believe the same goes for Gradius III and IV, Gradius V, and R-Type Final, though your preferences may vary. As was already mentioned, several of the Psikyo collections either got or are getting PS2 releases in Europe, though IIRC their quality varies somewhat. If you like older-school stuff, supposedly Europe got a good version of The Raiden Project (PS1) as well.

If you import, the PS1 got a port of the Raizing shmup Soukyugurentai, and while it's got some extra stuff in it, it's not as good as the more accurate Saturn port, but it is generally cheaper (and it got a re-release too, which lowers the price even more). Gradius Gaiden on the PS1 is also good, and not too pricey (and got 2 re-releases, IIRC); the Parodius games (Deluxe Pack, Jikkyo Oshaberi, and Sexy) also got (re-)released on PS1, but are rarer, though you can sometimes score a cheap copy if you keep your eyes open.

That's about all I can think of offhand as far as relatively inexpensive games go, hope you find some of them!

The DC's list of shmups actually isn't that large, when you get right down to it...as was listed earlier, the Giga Wings, Mars Matrix, and Gunbird 2 are the easiest ones to get ahold of, I believe that at least 2 or 3 of them got a PAL release. The rest of the DC's library you'll have to import from Japan: Border Down and Zero Gunner 2 are the only 2 other "exclusives" for the sytem, though the former tends to be pricier than the latter. Chaos Field, Ikaruga, Psyvariar II, Shikigami no Shiro II and Twinkle Star Sprites on DC, but are also available on other systems too, and often at lower prices (though again, the quality varies). There are also 2 DC shmups not yet released, namely Rajirugi and Under Defeat, but obviously we can't judge those yet. And that's really about it.

Ciao Pasquale, come va?"Stratos" da Demetrios?Se sì, ottimi gusti

I'm Italian as well, as Italians are: Aiva-Lun, Aiva-Nev, Turrican and Raiden Fighters 2. As for shmups, one suggestion: *avoid* Italian importers, and use
ebay instead, some japanese online shops like paletweb and yamatoku are way more convenient. Also, PAL conversions are more or less good, so if you can play PAL stuff, go for it. In case you need some tricks and tips, please head to the Strategy section.Once you feel confident enough, please join the fun in the High score section

Yeah, for instance, what is wrong with this Italian seller http://stores.ebay.com/RETROSYSTEMJP-IM ... -USA-GAMES ? His prices are insane! You should not support people like that. I wonder who buys anything from that guy at all...

Bella Rando!! Sapevo che eri italiano perchè ti ho beccato nella user list (ho lurkato un po di giorni prima di iscrivermi...)

So: I have a modded ps2 and I'm going to buy a DC that coul'd ignore region sets (I still don't know if a mod chip is needed, but somehaow I'll have a versatile console)... however, speaking of it (if it's not too OT) what kind of DC or modded DC is best for my purposes?

Rando: I've already posted in strategy section, requesting some delucidation about ESPGaluda, and will probably join the score thread in few days (when able to scoring decently in this Cave game)... Thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome to the forum. One title I didnt' see was Raiden Project for PSX. It's a bit difficult to get ahold of these days, but if you're a fan of either Raiden or Raiden 2, you won't be disappointed. It's one of my favorites, & in the top 5 of my collection. And thank you for recognizing "the mighty Thunderforce 4" - it's my fav shmup of all time!

Drat, so I did...I think it'd go in the second list above, since IIRC they're working on a PS2 port of it...

Sort of OT on my part, but if you'd rather not bother with a mod or the like, and you don't mind a bit of swapping, a boot disc is a readily available option for the DC...there are several that I know of, some of which you can DL for free and burn yourself, or just buy if you can't/don't want to do that.

So the boot disc will probably be the cheapest way to play import games... I'll probably check out those shops you suggested to buy cheap import games too, bucause ordering that stuff from my local seller (Pino il cafone... cafonissimo) it's very expensive: he buy the game from other importers and than he sells it to me overprice. That's not selling, it's robbery...
