Hammer & Sickle

Post by it290 »

Started playing this last night, and I'm loving the heck out of it. It's a PC strategy / role playing game (but mostly strategy), using the Silent Storm engine. You play as a Soviet operative doing covert missions in West Germany in 1949.

The game is a little rough around the edges, but what's great about it is the amount of freedom you have -- you can tackle most of the scenarios in any number of ways, and are completely free to make use of a large number of weapons, stealth techniques, and even some Fallout-style persuasion. The game doesn't hold your hand, either -- last night, I found myself attacked by a whole squad of American soldiers because I hung around one of the maps too long. You know what you're supposed to do, but you have to use your brains in figuring out how to do it.

The graphics are really cool, too -- nice 3d graphics presented in a pseudo-isometric style. The animations are pretty smooth as well. The music sucks, but luckily you can turn it off.

Anyway, Gamespot gave it a 3.6 or something like that. That's crap. This game is by a small foreign developer and it's a strategy title, so it's pretty much doomed to obscurity, but it's well worth checking out if you like tactical combat or PC style RPGs.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
