And what's an RPG with a boring story?

Useless.
They all have boring, trite stories. Golden Sun is enjoyable because it has good puzzles and some great dungeons. If you play RPGs for plot, just read a damn book.
And that's why I don't finish every RPG I play. I'm not gonna force myself to play something for 50+ hours if the story forces me to chain combo a bunch of yawns together. If I don't care about what's going on, I don't care at all.

I also liked Golden Sun. At least it doesn't have a downer character like Squall as the main character. It may have a typical RPG play, but IMO, the gameplay delivers. I prefer gameplay over story. I also like Mario and Luigi and Dragon Warrior 3 quite a bit.

Mario and Luigi doesn't have a deep story, but it has a ton of humor, a very good battle system, and clever puzzles. I love how you have to control both Mario and Luigi to solve the puzzles. The interactive battle system with the team up moves is quite nice too. The sequel for DS sounds very promising.

I also like old school games like Dragon Warrior III. It has the standard old school battles combined with a very well done class sytem. I think the original was one of the first RPGs with a day-night system (correct me if I'm wrong). I like the additions in the SNES and GBC versions too.

I'm really enjoying Sigma Star Saga. It's probably the closest thing to Guardian Legend 2 we'll ever see. Sure, the shooting segments are no Thunderforce V, but I wasn't really expecting anything like that. The RPG elements and the tons of possible weapon setups are what really make the game shine. We've seen tons of straight-forward, beat-it-in-one-sitting shmups, so it's nice to finally see something new.

Sorry for necromancing this so old thread but since there are already 2-3 differents thread about it, I don't think you need another new thread about Sigma Star Saga.

SSS is from my favourite GBA games. And maybe I am from the few ones that prefer it over The Guardian Legend. I know that SSS was heavily inspirited by TGH but I found the action-adventure part of TGH so boring. From the other hand, the action-adventure parts of SSS is quite enjoyable.

If I have one complain on SSS, that is the long shmup stages. When you try to explore an area to be often interrupted by random encounter shmup battle that last few minutes, it ruins the flow of the action/adventure. If all the random encounter shump battle were short (excluding the bosses), it would be much better.

I have heard that they were planning for a sequel with the help of Kickstarter until they changed plans and picked Shantae instead. Shantae was a much wiser choice since it is more popular, still I would to see them make a SSS spiritual sequel after finishing Shantae - Half Genie Hero.

I (and a ton of others, apparently) felt exactly the opposite way, which is why most see TGH as superior. The random encounters you mentioned are what pretty much ruin the action/adventure, but IMO even if they were gone TGH's exploration still has much better pace. And not to mention TGH's shmup sections are much more hectic, and more importantly, much more involved.

I like the aesthetic and characters though.

Shmup sections was the only thing I liked on The Guardian Legend. And of course its setting. If TGL only kept the shmup part it would be awesome.

Enter TGL as your password in TGL to play its shmup-only mode.

That's all Sigma Star Saga does right. And even the writing (and therefore, any given character) gets dumb as the game drags on. At one point the main character is convinced he knocked a woman up... that he didn't have sex with. This adult military fighter pilot is somehow as ignorant as a child and thinks girls catch preggo from holding hands or something.
