Here is one of my favourite shmups which was released exclusive as a DSiWare game (which means you can also dowload it for 3DS). It is also quite fresh and incredibly cheap (only 2 euro/dollars). It would be nice if the creators would make a 3DS remake since its gameplay is ideal for the 3D screen of 3DS. Read more about Flip the Core at this review:

Re: Flip the Core
Yeah, it kind of does, though I think the rotation aspect brings a new element to the mix that shmups should probably have explored years ago. I do think the super-blocky graphical style is fitting for the game, though somewhat played-out at this point. It looks like fun, though. I might have to look into that. My wife's 3DS could have a bit of shmup lover after allPretas wrote:Looks like Fez: The STG. Urgh.

I might be missing something in saying so, but the concept seems pretty similar to that of Revolver360...which one came out first?FRO wrote:Yeah, it kind of does, though I think the rotation aspect brings a new element to the mix that shmups should probably have explored years ago.
Re: Flip the Core
That's a good question. The Revolver360 Steam page shows a release date of October 24, 2014, but is that the actual release date, or just the Steam release? Revolve360 looks like it might be a cross between Flip the Core and Xyanide, to a lesser extent. It's on my Steam wishlist, looks like a lot of fun.
If Flip the Core was released earlier via DSiWare, it would seem that most likely that game predated Revolver.

Yeah, the original game for Xbox 360 came out before Flip the Core.

Re: Flip the Core
I remember buying this DsiWare when it came out in 2012, and this thread made me replay it.
The music is alright, the concept is inventive and some of the enemies make good use of it, but I felt this game had a bunch of oddities that explain why I quickly lost interest in it three years ago.
For starters, it has loose controls with a bit of inertia. There are also no bosses at the end of the 3 first stages, only one boss at the end of the fourth and final stage, which is really odd, and also a shame because the boss is a hint of the interesting things that could have been done with the flipping mechanic. The stages themselves are not very fast-paced and kinda boring I think.
And lastly, the in-game ranking sorts your scores by stage progression instead of score, so reaching stage 2 with a lower score than a stage 1 score will net you a higher position on the ranking.
