Is this a permanent forum or we'll go back to the old one eventually?

And please, disable guest posts. It attracts trolls.

old forum backup

Post by shadmin »

(too lazy to log in as me, tis bloodflowers here)

The database backup of the old forum is incomplete. Reason? It was so large and Lamespys servers so slow, that dumping the DB overran the max PHP execution time limit. You can even see it in the last few lines of the dump file. I manually restored the data into a database to see what we had - all user mail, posts, and so on - but no users table and some of the other critical ones that tie it all together. Without the users table, the rest of the info is rendered worthless...

To restore the old data, we need a full db backup, someone at Lamespy would have to do it, but they don't seem to give a shit. New hosts came recommended on a PHPBB admins forum, I've paid for the account out of my own pocket and don't really care about that, but maybe we should take Paypal donations at some point for its eventual upkeep.

I will say however, that I've raised a few support calls with these people already, and every one was answered within an hour - they were the people who pointed out the forum restore was failing and why.

Have to see how it goes!

Would it be possible to dump the old posts into some kind of read-only archive? It'd suck to lose them entirely...

Or failing that, can we at least knock some skulls around at LameSpy to get the old forum back up long enough for us to do some cut'n'paste jobs (like grabbing the tables from my highscore threads or the text of mySalamander ST...)

I'm guessing no, since it's been down for weeks and all. :x

*pukes*

Man, I'm not trying to be an ass, but I knew some of that should have been backed up on a website. Good lord, I hope people like Rando have their STs saved on their computer.

What a nasty blow! Well, we better start posting which version of Dodonpachi is better right now!

Good grief, waves goodbye to beloved Garegga and Mars Matrix STs he enjoyed so much. :(

My guess is that anyone who bothered to write an ST probably saved it on their computer. But what about the high score tables and so many of the tech questions. It really is a huge loss though (if it is any consolation) way better than no forum at all.

Yeah, as I say - gone. All of it.

I'll try to get around to fishing the textual content of the score threads out of the db scrap we have. It might not come to anything, but I'll have a bash - even if it's just to get the raw text out into a file for people to copy+paste into new topics.

Aww crap.

Is there anyway to recover my Avatar? I didn't keep a copy of it laying around anywhere.

Edit: nevermind - the k-limit was upped and I can use the one I use on other forums.

I'm going to be backing it up myself once a month, including verifying the SQL file it produces.

Easily changed - possible to have multiple skins too so people can pick one other than the default. So far the feedback has been very positive on the new one though.

All things in time, there will be room to play around with themes and the like down the road, getting it working again was/has been/is the priority.

I may have a newer backup -- not sure if it's complete.

Post by nullstar »

I've got a backup from Dec. 24 -- but it could very well suffer from incompleteness just like the one Malc had. Size (in bytes): 512,406,383, so just shy of 500 MB...

Unfortunately, I've only got 512 MB of physical RAM, so it's a wee bit hard to get any Windows apps to handle it. I could copy it to my Linux box (but even less RAM) and try again, or I could compress it and upload to you, etc...

Easy way to find out - copy it to your linux box, unzip if required, and use 'tail' to view the last few lines. If it's truncated you will see some lines at the bottom about PHP execution time being reached.

if that is feasible that would be worth it (at least for the strats).
