This is definitely not the case. They built some very flexible and simple control options into the game, which allow any player to use any controller they want. The mapping options just have you hold a button or key down for a few seconds to assign it.
Controlling the menu with a mouse pointer, via an analogue stick, is definitely in my book of afterthoughtness :)
I agree 100%. Mouse-based menu's are half-assed shit.

Damn how much damage has the console dlcs done :(
Before all this shitty DLC stuff existed it was called updates, and they were for free and that is the way it should be released on Pc and not for a few bucks.
Off topic aside If this port has some kind of succes, I see it probably coming to other systems.
Then again, I picked up this game on steam for like $3.00 which is nothing so if a dev needs a few bucks to justify releasing an "update" then I don't see the problem.

Or they were branded as expansion packs and sold for $20-30. At least digital distribution makes it feasible to release small $5 add-ons.

Anyway, I'm excited for this! I haven't played the game much on PC, and the PS4's easy streaming functionality will hopefully get the game some easy exposure.

Expansion packs at least added a meaningful amount of content to games. Most DLC can't even get that right.

Somehow I'd missed this, but I am very keen to see the new levels and how the new ships redress the balancing.

Now... to get a stick working on the PS4...

So instead of releasing it on the PS3, which more people have, and would run the game just fine, they released it on the PS4?

That process is always part of generational platform migration. I absolutely see the point of supporting the machine with the more populace user base, but if every developer did that, consumer or industry would never get to move onto new hardware.

Of course, there's always releasing for both generations!

To be quite honest, I don't see the need for next gen consoles at all (except for the Wii U). The only thing different about the games is that they have hyper realistic graphics now, which isn't really necessary.

Sales revenue.

Sony and Microsoft are (apparently) hemorrhaging money due to the high cost/low return of the PS3 and 360 (or so I've heard.)

Sony was losing money with the PS3 initially, but they broke even a while ago. Microsoft lost money with the entire Xbox project, but eventually broke even with the 360.

Sony is losing money for many other reasons. Microsoft isn't in a terrible spot right now, but if I remember correctly they're losing money on their various mobile attempts.

Yes, it is necessary; you can't just have some special-snowflake opinion on something like this. The entire point of console development for the past two decades has been better and better graphics, and many types of games benefit from such a thing.

Fair point! In the case of these particular consoles, I'm included to agree (though the PS$ is starting to blossom into something quite wonderful). I'm always up for new consoles, so not against the idea of next-gen, but these next-gen? Hmmm. I think that was your perspective, right Lord Satori?

Anyway, to get things back on topic, is there any more info on what the new levels and ships introduce?

I never heard of the PS$. Must be an expensive console to have the dollar sign in the name. ;)

Agreed. Love new hardware, but these newfangled machines are just not exotic enough :) Do love the new OS on PS4, though!

Back on topic, I imagine part of the reason this is coming to PS4 (over PS3) is that Sony's support for indies taking games to new-gen is so strong. I'd bet the Sony team made this decision very easy for the studio (and I mean that utterly positively; I'm right behind Sony's indie and small team support in making PS4 and Vita great gaming platforms.

I'll get to try it out then, cool :)

As for the 'why not PS3?' thing:

I loved Jamestown, my only real complaint was the I couldn't control my ship with the D-Pad and only the stick... I got used to it still felt innacurate compared to even the garbage d-pad on my Xbox360 controller. I did 4 player co op once, it was awesome.

Even if it were - as far as the Video Games Industry is concerned only people with current-generation hardware have the money and inclination to buy "new" games. Installed base only has any weight while the hardware is still considered current generation.
  • If you have the money, why don't you have current generation hardware?
  • If you want "new" games, why don't you have current generation hardware?
  • Oh yeah - and for your personal convenience we are willing to sell you (all over again) the games you have grown so fond of for your current generation hardware (... if we are so lucky that is).

Huh? So how are you supposed to play this with an arcade stick then?

I was able to play the PC version with a stick just fine. It's been a while, but I remember it supporting a whole bunch of different control methods, so it might just have been some sort of config issue.

Yeah - I used my PS4 stick (VSHG) just fine on the Mac/Steam version of Jamestown, so I presume that stick should work on this version. I hope so!

I'm pretty keen on revisiting this game too; can't wait.

Oh - and looking back on my comments in this thread, I was right to include a bit of dense sitting and uncertainty around definite comments on what's now the current gen, because as it turns out I've now had heaps of fun on both my PS4 and Xbox One; great machines both. Or platforms for great games, to be more accurate, I guess.

Fingers crossed for a few more shmups!

Got this the other night. I have the PC version, but hearing that this had extra stages, and the fact that I play on my consoles WAY more than my PC, made this kind of a "I need to get this" kind of thing.
The new stages are really cool. They're not half assed or anything like that. And they add them in "Super Gauntlet Mode", since they are optional stages, that you can skip over, if you just want to play the 5 stages. They're in outer space, but one has a pirate theme.

The game feels more full now, as it seemed a little short.
They swanked up the menus and stuff a bit, it seems.
It'll definitely get more play from me now.

It's pretty good for a "first try" American Bullet hell game. You gotta play on Legendary, to get any kind of challenge though. Divine slaughtered me, and there's a difficulty above that as well.

I'd give it a 7.5. Definitely better than Sine Mora!
Not as good as CrimzonClover though. Now that needs to be on PS4.

Can anyone confirm if this works with a PS3 stick and if not if it works with a PS4 stick? Thanks
