Perfect Cherry Blossom... frame rate issues

Post by rtw »

I used to play this on my old PIII but when I fired it up on my new machine (XP SP2, P4, 3Ghz, ATI Radeon...) I'm getting 600-700fps. This is slightly too fast :D

I tried playing with the "custom.exe" but even though I've tried all the options the speed stays the same.

Anyone have any tips on how I could get it down to a normal 60fps ?

Have you tried snooping around at shrinemaiden.com?

I don't know if it matters, but maybe try forcing vsync on?

I've been snooping at shrinemaiden but found nothing which solved the issue.

vsync sounds like a good idea but how do I enable it ? I have tried all the settings in "custom.exe" and I have gone through all my graphics card settings.

On ATI cards it's something like display properties -> advanced -> 3D -> direct3d -> vertical sync -> 'always on'. This is using the control panel, I don't know about the ATI control center thing (don't use it).

On my machine though, I have vsync set to 'application preference' I believe, and PCB runs at 60 anyway. I think it probably turns vsync on by itself, so perhaps you have it set to 'always off' or something.

Yep. Try what it290 said. Vsync will cure that.

Thank you for all your tips! I managed to find the "vsync" setting on my ATI card but it made no difference if it was on or off.

I have however managed to discover what was wrong :D. I was trying the English patch so naturally I was running th07.exe from the command line. Turns out there is some hidden feature here. If I execute th07.exe without any arguments the game is insanely fast. If I append some text after the executable it runs at normal speed or if I click on the shortcut it will run at normal speed!

th07.exe -> insane FPS
th07.exe foo -> 60 FPS

Thank you for all kind assistance!

I have an odd problem with the game too. On the Touhoucab, Scarlet Devil and Imperishable Night both maintain a rock solid 60fps. PCB always hovers just below, 59.8 or so. I'm assuming it's a program bug, very odd as the machine isn't being stressed at all.
