Sony PVM kaput? [Repaired!]

Post by hosser »

Hi

I bought a Sony PVM 2030MD - it turned up today and I've powered it on but this happens. I take it this PVM is toast? Luckily it only cost me £20 but still... :(

Ignore the noises in the background of the video - a bus was pulling up outside. Oh and it normally does the loud PARP noise when you switch it on but it didn't in this case because I'd only just switched it off before I started recording. That green light at the top of the bezel looks ominous - what is it for?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Well I got curious and opened the thing and found the fault - someone at DHL must have been throwing it around like an asbolute chimp, as the neckboard had a pretty big crack running through it. I couldn't see anything else wrong with it though and the damage to the neckboard severed only maybe 10 traces. A few bodge wires and resoldered pads later, and voila! It is revived! :)

That's great news, congratulations.

It was a shame to let a champ like that die.

What the deuce is up with these neckboards anyhow? How come so many break during shipping.

Also, kudos are in order for saving that PVM rather than tossing it, like most would have.

Considering that it's pretty much floating inside the monitor without much support and these things tend to get roughhoused in transit, it's not hard to see why the neckboard is at such a high risk of damage.

Another beauty safely saved from the evil, uncaring shipping overlords.

Yeah exactly - the design of the neckboard is complete garbage. I think even standing the TV on its back panel (with the screen facing upwards) would be enough to damage the neckboard. It's a wonder any of these TVs make it through a distribution centre without damage.

They seem to be easy to fix at least.

Yeah, thankfully the board is super simple.

if the board cracks more, i found a place where you can buy neckboards for pvms. they cost around 40-50 bucks.

But forget about buying an A board. I have a cracked A board and they want $350 for one.
