My Little Quarth clone

Post by Laurel_McFang »

As a student project I have been studying and trying to make a shmup. Got my bullet array working this morning (I am that noob). Video here for the curious:

http://youtu.be/ENhvYm7noTo

Just so you don't click blindly expecting awesome grfx etc here is a pic:

Image

The Quarth bullets now stack on other bullets:

Edit: and object collision now works perfectly... Well ok so far:

Next step: making the Quarth pieces, animating them, getting the game to register when an enclosed shape is made, dragons, wyverns, etc.
[s]Lol and of course the major bug still plaguing me in this play through the bullet erase erases bullets that haven't gone off the screen yet.[/s]

Beginning to look like Breakout:

Basic shapes are there.

This is the first time I heard of Quarth. I searched for a gameplay vid of it on Youtube and ... hey it looks really fun! Good luck on your attempt toward the clone. :) What did you use to make the game -- GameMaker or something?

Codea on the iPad. It uses lua. Yeah Quarth is available for VC btw on the 3ds. I think bullet heaven HD has a review of it somewhere. Awesome little game that marries Tetris to Space invaders. Now have some rudimentary array for the blocks and a little collision detection buggy detection, but soon my friend soon. Thanks for the comments and good luck on your game.

Wow never knew it's possible to code on the iPad. I'll check it out sometime, it sounds awesome! Man I'm itching to play a modernized version of Quarth already :P And thanks too!

Got the blocks to stick about right by sticking the collision detection inside the animate loop.
Btw I still don't know all of the power ups just the speed up. Also it's unique a shmup because it's actually a grid based system I.e. Your ship actually pops between various preset parts of the grid in order to ensure your fire is always on target for the intended blocked. So tomorrow I am hoping to get my grid down and setting up the ship so it stays in the present grid and the blocks spawn in the grid in correct order or I will end up playing Gradius collection on my vita and puttering around with all the ps plus games I am downloading thanks to the free trial. Probably a bit of both :)

Image

Sadly all game faqs lists is 2 power ups from the famicom version (purple blocks = speed up / white blocks = clear)

If I was still in Thailand I could probably pick up an old famicom and Quarth in a second.

Grid is now up. Got the time freeze power up yesterday in the gameboy Quarth.

Bricks now move. Object collision. Works in all orientations. Object collision is a little off though when bricks are moving.

Looking good so far! Keep it up. :) I can see the bullets are aligned to the grid -- I think it might help if the player's ship is aligned to the grid too.

Reminder this is strictly a student game i.e. A way of learning the basics.
Anyways, update blocks now pop once the shape is finished.

Getting there. Next is an array for levels.

Great to see Quarth get some fan game loving!

I'm amazed it didn't become a huge series outside of Japan. I couldn't buy the (amazing) Famicom version fast enough after finally playing it on GB.

if you have a list of all the power ups in the famicom version let me know or gamefaqs. believe it or not the game is a tad undocumented.

Yeah, between just those two versions there's quite a few differences. The GB one isn't as smooth or sexy; but it's somewhat more advanced, actually, not unlike the 'Deluxe' versions of other arcade games on the system.

In the FC one, you can't collect and stock up on powerups, they just activate on finishing certain different-looking shapes (like in the arcade.) The ones I know for sure are faster shooting, scroll stop and clear all.

Yeah, I had noticed those too. In the Gameboy ones the specials stack so hadn't collected all of them.
Anyways, buggy but infinite build:
