3DO 240p output mod - VP536A (Gold star, FZ-10, more?)

Post by Glossectomy »

So a fellow by the name of Airs on the assembler boards found this mod and all credit goes to him. I just want to get the info out there because I know I looked everywhere for this mod when I RGB modded my 3DO. Basically by changing CTRLB1(pin 52) from lo to high (pin 55)changes the video from 480i to 240p. So by connecting these 2 pins you get a nice, clean progressive signal.

From what he said he was able to directly connect pins 52 and 55 and his Goldstar model would boot in 240p. I tested this with my FZ-10, but it seems it has to boot in 480i. So adding a switch let me boot in 480i and immediately switch it to 240p. At this point I don't know if anyone else has attempted this, so I'm not sure if mine is a fluke, or if that's the only way to get it to 240p.

I'm going to do some captures tonight, and I'll post them up in here showing the difference.

This should work on any 3DO with the VP536A in it. Obviously do at your own risk, but my RGB modded FZ-10 works great with a switch installed.

Hope this info is of use to someone, and if you decide to do the mod please post your results!

That's awesome! I'll have to try to do that this spring when everything is unpacked!

Hopefully this picture isn't too huge, but here's a shot of SSF2T running in 240p. This is captured via RGB into an XRGB Mini upscaling to 1080p.

After messing with it a bit further, it seems that when switching to 240p, you can actually lock it on the incorrect line update. If that happens you just switch again and you should hit the correct one. If you're in 240p and the picture looks off, that's probably what the problem is.

This is a picture showing the incorrect line update at 240p.

That's pretty sweet I wish I could mod my 3do for rgb. Its always out of my price range though just like all the HDD and SD card options. But I did see on YouTube a guy found an easier way to soldier the rgb kit in.

Apparently this Airs fellow also has an account here! ;)

I completed the RGB mod for my Goldstar with a VP536A using a BU3616K DAC. Trying to teach myself Eagle to make a PCB for it because using a QFP44 breakout board kinda sucks! Here are some comparison videos:

Has anyone tried capturing a 3DO with the XCAPTURE-1 or USB3HDCAP?

I'm having trouble getting AmaRecTV to give me 60fps in the viewscreen, any ideas?

Would performing this 240p mod give me a proper 60fps signal?

I don't have an XCAPTURE-1 but I haven't had any issues capturing from the 3DO in both 480i and 240p with the X-CAPTURE Mini (59.xx fps as you can see in my YouTube videos).

I guess my next question would be, do you know if the 3DO actually processes 60 frames of animation? even if it does a 60hz signal?

I tried running the 4DO emulator with the same game next to my capture feed and I don't think I could see a difference in the framerate despite the emulator saying 60fps and AmaRecTV saying 30fps

This whole thing is odd
