sorry about the confusion. I currently use a 2010 version of Daemon Tools Lite. Free, Version 4.35.6.. On sites like filehippo.com you can download all the back versions as well. Maybe these are still clean as they used to be ?

Other mounting tools have problems with the track layout or tend to change the pauses between tracks. They might seem fine, but this will screw with your final bin/cue image. I've used Daemon Tools since forever and especially with PCE titles, that's really the way to go.

If I wanted to evaluate the differences between different video processors for 480i material myself, what would be some ideal games to test and some tell-tale visual effects and artifacts to look for? Playstation 2 games would be the easiest for me to obtain and test at the moment. I'm also only interested in NTSC.

Can this be fixed or lessened without opening up the TV?

To some extent using the service menu, yes.

EDIT: get it here: http://elektrotanya.com/sony_kv-27fs13_ ... nload.html
The download link will appear after a while next to the sentence "This file is downloadable free of charge".
Start to read Section 4, it goes on for several pages explaining things.

And remember you can never get perfect geometry on these things. Make sure you have some test patterns running from a PC with tv-out, or use the 240p test suite with one of your consoles.

Oh you can ! (I've seen it during a couple of meets where I met a batshit crazy crt nut who owned over 40 displays) at least for one source and other very similar you can... it's hours and hours of work, requiring actual yoke/magnets/caps/etc fuckery, a lot of knowledge and skills.

Good to know and thanks for the service manual, I couldn't find it when I went looking.

I'll be running the test suite since it's easier, the geometry test is horrifying to look at right now .

What's the easiest way of getting 480p or 720p out of a PAL Xbox? Is it even possible with PAL games? I found this thread but I don't know if it's still relevant today. My console is the latest revision IIRC if that matters.

The link you provided is still relevant today and there are plenty of youtube videos showing you step by step how to do it. I actually softmodded my PAL Xbox 2 weeks ago and it was very straightforward to do and now all of my PAL Xbox games can play in 480p. I think virtually all PAL Xbox games can output in 480p, it's just that for whatever reason MS decided to remove the ability for the PAL consoles to output in this resolution even though the games are capable. Crazy really.

I have never been good at soldering to SMD ICs. if I have to do multiple wires, and they aren't next to each other, I am usually fine, but if the wires are next to each other on every pin, I tend to screw up royally with busted pins, scorched pads, etc all because I over compensate with my solder.

Can I get some techniques that I can practice to make myself better? It's a pain in the butt to look for VIAs and other alternative solder points.

Update:
I can get the picture to something I find acceptable except for the dip at the top of the screen unless I overscan it. Would a degauss wand help any or should I overscan it a bit and be done with it?

So I got a Sony PVM Model 1943MD. I wanted to know what kind of cable I would need in order to get it hooked up to my PC. I've looked and I have seen 'VGA to BNC' but I'm not sure if it would support EXT SYNC. I have my Snes hooked up to and it requires ext sync for RGB video.

Heres a pic of the rear inputs.

What video card do you have? With a Radeon HD7000 series card, I've had success by just using a BNC T-connector to combine H and V sync from a VGA>BNC cable.

Though sometimes I've seen the option for composite sync in Catalyst Control Center. Never tried it though. If it worked you wouldn't need the T-connector.

You'd need the same sort of cabling/adapter I'm talking about, but I have no idea if you can get 15hz on newer Nvidia cards. You just have to experiment.

I was looking at this. Would this work?

Yeah, you need something like that, but then you will probably need to combine the H and V sync with a BNC T-connector, unless you have a composite sync option in your Nvidia control panel.

Sounds cool. But one other question I have about the sync. My Snes only needs One Sync cable. Is VGA to bnc different from RGB scart breakout cables?

I guess what I am asking is does the EXT SYNC on the back of the PVM contain both Horizontal and Vertical Sync?

Yeah, that's why you'll probably need the T-connector. We call it composite sync (c-sync). Though some video cards can be configured to send C-sync over the H-sync line, and you'd leave V-sync unhooked.

Okay than it should work. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi folks! This seems silly, but I have a few questions about BNC jacks, like the ones on the back of a Sony PVM/BVM (you can tell I haven't been in the hardware scene for too long).

From my understanding, one of the reasons it was used is because it offers a tighter, more secure connection than RCA jacks. Which makes sense, if you're using security monitors for example you wouldn't want something to get unintentionally unplugged. The other reason I'm having a harder time understanding. I read something about "impedance matching" and "75 Ohms", but I'm not exactly sure what this means. Can anyone give me a slightly-dumbed-down version?

My other question regarding BNC (and RCA) is about video quality. If I connect an RGB source to a PVM by doing SCART cable > female SCART-to-BNC cable, is the video signal/quality affected at all? What about for Component (YPbPr) sources? Would connecting my 480p consoles to a PVM-14L5 for example, through component cable > RCA-to-BNC adapters, affect the video signal/quality?

Thanks!

Impedance matching is a Thing to worry about when you have different length runs of cable, from what I've gathered. Most of the stuff we use is 75 ohm-rated so you don't have to worry about it. There are some 50 ohm video things out there but you probably won't run into them.

As for the second question, you gotta use something. SCART has a lot of pins and theoretically it might cause some kind of problems in limited situations, but it's the standard we've got so don't worry about it. And realistically speaking, people have been getting very clean RGB output over the SCART connector for a long while. RCA jacks shouldn't be any problem. If you are using component (YPbPr that is - technically RGBs is component video too!) then all the retail cables for systems have RCA connectors, which you'll need to adapt.

The really short version: You don't need to worry about any of those things. Analog goes in, through, and out, and it makes your PVM and eyes happy

It's definitely important to get quality cables though. I have a really crummy component cable for PS2 that gives ghosting and flashing lines in the picture.

Where is a good place to get an RGB scart cable for ps2? Both retro console accessories and retro gaming cables aren't selling them so I'm not sure where to get a high quality cable.

retro_console_accessories has sold them until recently, probably just ran out of connectors. Here's the old listing: ebay.com/itm/161577339442

Any of you seen this: http://hackaday.com/2015/02/13/hdmi-aud ... o-geo-mvs/

Looks pretty sweet, and I'm sure the same approach could be applied to other consoles and arcade boards! Still gathering all of the information on what to order to give this a try.

I have a question about a multi purpose AC adapter with the following specs:

Input: AC 220V - 240V 50-60Hz
Output: DC 10V - 12V
1200 mA

Picture of it: http://i.imgur.com/VcZp97f.jpg

Can I use this on my Famicom AV console?

Base on the specifications, it should. However, I'm not sure the polarity of the barrel of it. Probably want to give this a check plus measure the polarity using a multimeter.
