How would you rank the various Nintendo consoles and which are the very best games for each system?
I think that there's a case for saying that the GB is best overall, but it's a bit difficult to compare handhelds and consoles, so I'm suggesting we stick to the latter.

I love the GBA, mainly because I have Yoshi's Island (the definitive 2D platformer) on the go, but now the DS is out and has GBA compatibility, I'd have to say the DS is the best Ninty hardware overall.
As for actual consoles though, the SNES has the best range of games, all of them classics, and all of them affordable - stuff like Secret Of Mana, Link To The Past, Yoshi's Island, CastleVania 4, R-Type 3, the Parodii etc - while the Cube comes a close second, but only for the Zelda Collection and Monkey Ball ^_-.

Favorites: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Astro Boy, Metroid Fusion, ...etc
DS - It plays GBA games, so no need to get a GBA now. DS games are cool too.

GC - not such a big library, but there are some great titles.

NES: Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu comes to mind; I've never played the TG-16 game, but I've heard they're basically the same.
SNES: Super Mario World, good times. First game I ever beat, I remember going to the neighbors next door and telling them.
N64: Ocarina of Time, not much to say.
GameCube: F-Zero GX or Ikaruga, I don't know. GameCube's the only N console I never had much time with.

Bah! GBA was the best thing to happen to games in the past 5 years. Great 2D action games, great RPG's (in fact, I consider it to be the best system for RPG's), and some fun ports of older games. Plus, it's handheld, cheap, and has cheap games. Not to mention all the GB and GBC games you can play.
Sure there wasn't a backlight and the SP fucking murders my hands, but the quality of the software is great.

NES: Even though I'm a Sega fanboy, this is the definitive videogame system. The only flaw it has is the cartridge slot.

SNES: Another amazing system, I prefer the other 16-bitters because of their superior action and shmup titles, but the SNES is still great.

Gamecube: Nintendo made some bad moves and didn't cultivate third party developers the way they could have, but this system still has some sweet games.

I like the SNES and GBA, and partial to the Famicom/Disk System.

I own the systems, but have no more than two games for each. My GameCube sits in my frequent access closet because there is the miniscule possibility I might play it again someday, but I've boxed up my DS and put it in deep storage.

GB-Nintendo's first portable. Started with "quick fix" games, but later branched out into more complex games. A great portable system.

NES: My first videogame system, loads of childhood memories. The graphics are a bit dated now, but there's tons of good games for it.
My NES picks - Super Mario Bros 3, Kirby's Adventure, Final Fantasy, the Legend of Zelda
SNES: This the where most of my videogaming childhood came from. Great 16-bit graphics and sound. Amazing library.
My SNES picks - Super Mario World + Allstars, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy II(IV), Final Fantasy III(VI), Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario Kart, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and many more.
N64 - Now this is where my fanboyism waned. Good controller at the time, but clunky graphics, and cart format alienated third party developers. (This system was out when CD-based consoles were all the rage). Some good games, however.

My GB picks - Tetris, Super Mario Land, Solarstriker, Kirby's Pinball Land, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Pokemon Red&Blue
GBC - It's basically a portable NES, which is cool in my book.
My GBC picks - Super Mario Bros. DX, Link's Awakening DX, Zelda: Orcale of Seasons and Ages, and Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
GBA - A portable SNES with many great games consisting of original titles and SNES ports, if you can sift through all the cartoon/movie based crap games. If you have a Gameboy Player for you Gamecube, you can play this games on a nice big TV screen.
My GBA picks - Any SNES port that's done right, Mario&Luigi - Superstar Saga, Gradius Galaxies, Zelda: The Minish Cap, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, and many others.
DS - It sounded gimmiky at first, and N64ish graphics were hard to swallow, but this turned out to be the best handheld yet. I like the bright screen for GBA use (although I still favor the SP for prolong GBA play), the touch screen rocks, and two screens means all kinds of cool innovative stuff. GBA support adds more to it's rockin' library.
My DS picks - Mariokart DS, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, Animal Crossing Wild World, Meteos, and many more.

I'd go so far as to say that the SNES produced the most atmospheric games between it and the Genesis/PC Engine systems. Not just because of the graphical and sound quality but because of the design. I mean Master System is "better" than the NES in many ways, but the games in it look bland, backgrounds aren't as creative as they could be, etc. SNES has so many games that really pushed the hardware to its limits.
Christ there's still like tons of games popping into my head still that I would be gladly stranded on an island on with that game alone.

I'd go so far as to say that the SNES produced the most atmospheric games between it and the Genesis/PC Engine systems. Not just because of the graphical and sound quality but because of the design. I mean Master System is "better" than the NES in many ways, but the games in it look bland, backgrounds aren't as creative as they could be, etc. SNES has so many games that really pushed the hardware to its limits.
Christ there's still like tons of games popping into my head still that I would be gladly stranded on an island on with that game alone.
