John Connor: Okay, people we're done here, let's pack it up and head to the afterparty!
Soldier: Sir, shouldn't we at least unplug this thing before we go?
John Connor: Nah, I'm sure it's perfectly fine. There's a rat kebab with my name on it that's getting cold.
Soldier: Sir! Sir! While we were out, one of those magic terminators made entirely out of liquid metal snuck through the time portal!
John Connor: Don't you need the field created by a living organism to be able to go through that? Oh well, let's reprogram a meat-terminator and send it through to stop it. And make sure it obeys my commands.
Soldier: The terminator has been sent, sir! Should we unplug the time portal now?
John Connor: Do you mind? I'm having a moonshine mojito right now. These things can wait, soldier, loosten up!
Soldier: Sir! Sir!
Old Claire Danes: He's passed out, soldier, what is it now?
Soldier: One of those super-duper terminators that has the magic liquid metal AND a flamethrower attachment just snuck through the time portal!
Old Claire Danes: Well go send another meat terminator to stop it. But make sure this one is programmed to follow MY orders!
Soldier: The terminator has been sent maam! Maam?
Old Claire Danes: Zzzzzz...
*Next Morning*
Soldier: Sir! Sir! Another magic liquid metal terminator snuck through...
John Connor: Ahh! Shut up! Fuck me, I'm hung over... Look, just send a meat terminator to watch over my mom from childhood until I'm born, okay?
Soldier: Then should we unplug...
John Connor: SHUT UP AND LET ME SLEEP! And turn off the lights!

Without James Cameron (my fave director) it can't be anywhere near as good to the first two (my fave movies). But I'm enough of an Arnold fan to just be happy to see him reprise the role again.GaijinPunch wrote:Genisys can only be better than my expectation based on the trailer.

Most of the obvious ones have been talked about here ad naseum. Blade Runner, The Thing, etc. Coherence is an indie flick that is worth the download, and falls in the SciFi realm. Hardware is another goodie.Sinful wrote:Anyone want to name some of their fave sci-fi flicks for me to torrent? >_>

My brother just pointed me to The Thing movie a few days ago. Have just seen the prequal remake first. Next the original release which is already downloaded.
I can't believe I never seen Blade Runner in all my life either (outside of the very beginning). It's already downloaded. Kinda saving it, lol, but any day I will finally see this ultra classic flick. EDIT - whoops. Already have it downloaded (did a wiki sci fi listing then added a bunch that seemed sci fi enough for me), so I'm going to watch it right now.
Coherence? Sure. I'll track it down right now. Thank you, GajinPunch.

Shit, you've never seen those? They're pretty much cream of the crop and defined the genre. Don't forget Alien & Aliens while you're at it. 2001: if you want to see what Interstellar was trying and utterly failing to recreate. This is more a setting-driven movie than plot-driven, and there has never been a more realistic and coherent sci fi setting ever put to film.Sinful wrote:Anyone want to name some of their fave sci-fi flicks for me to torrent? >_>
Blade Runner Director's Cut: natch.
The Matrix: I don't know if it's even possible to appreciate this movie anymore, it has been so diluted by pop culture appropriation and its terrible sequels, but it is the "Star Wars" of Generation X.
Robocop (the original): Paul Verhoven's masterpiece. Its social satire is even more relevant today. See for yourself why people were so outraged just by the idea of a reboot.
Star Trek 2 the Wrath of Khan: Even if you're not a Trekkie, this movie is totally accessible. Such a great movie that years later desperate Paramount execs tried to resuscitate the franchise by copying it three times! (Star Trek Nemesis and both JJ Abrams Treks) The best acting from William Shatner ever caught on film, thanks to a heroic effort on behalf of director Nicholas Meyer.
The original, NOT SPECIAL, edition of the Star Wars trilogy: The shoehorned-in CGI just takes you out of the movie, and in the DVD special edition of Empire was ruined by a moronic change:
Spoiler
The emperor fucking tells Darth Vader that Luke is his son halfway into the film.
I feel so sorry for you going into The Thing for the first time after already having your expectations tainted by that awful prequel.

On the theme of sci-fi, I've rewatched the first hour of Solaris (1972) while training tonight. I had to stop to shower and watch the end of the football game, but it will be very hard for me to go to bed now without watching the other 1h45...

K, seen Coherence yesterday before sleepy time. And I can't believe that movie was the second time I heard of that cat in the box with poisen theory or whatever it is. As something like 3 days ago I also heard of it in Repo Man. Weird how life is like that. You never hear something all your life, then you always hear it.
Anyways, that movie was a great idea. The only part I didn't enjoy was I wasn't buying the conversations before things started getting weird as natural enough. Especially with the ultra realistic view of the movie. So if it wasn't for your suggestion, I may never have watched it due to the slow start.

A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly someone will say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate of shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in looking for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.Sinful wrote:K, seen Coherence yesterday before sleepy time. Finally saw the original Oldboy recently and I can't believe it took me so long to sit down and watch it. Crazy film that lingers on the mind afterwards, which is the way a film should leave you. Then I decided for giggles to watch the US remake. For what it's worth they didn't sanitise it but it fails so spectacularly that I've pretty much blocked it from my mind. Everything that made the original so gut wrenchingly brutal was sapped from this version, I read that even Spike Lee was unhappy with it. I really don't mind remakes if they have a different story to tell (for all the hate they get at least the new Robocop and Total Recall tried to be something different) but an inferior, shot for shot remake like Oldboy really does scream pointless to me.
Also caught John Wick, now that is a lead character with a reputation!

Besides what has just been listed, here are some of my sci-fi favorites.Sinful wrote:Anyone want to name some of their fave sci-fi flicks for me to torrent? >_>
In order of release date (oldest to newest):
Westworld (1973) - the robots in a futuristic theme park go haywire (The Simpsons did a great parody of the film)
Escape from New York (1981) - the iconic Snake Plissken is sent into a futuristic prison to rescue the President
Tron (1982)
The Last Starfighter (1984) - cheesy 80s family-friendly sci-fi centering around an arcade game used as a recruiting device for an alien war
Brazil (1985) - very British dark comedy set in a dystopian future run by an excessively bureaucratic government
Predator (1987) - Arnold fights an alien hunter sent to Earth.
Total Recall (1990) - Arnold struggles to remember his own identity and unravel a conspiracy surrounding the planet Mars.
Demolition Man (1993) - cryogenically frozen Stallone fights a 90s criminal in a future society that has eliminated crime and thus become weak
Stargate (1994)
Waterworld (1995) - critics panned it, but I love it for the atmosphere, epic scale, and Dennis Hopper as the villain.
Strange Days (1995) - thrilling murder mystery yarn featuring a high-tech cyber street drug/entertainment medium
Twelve Monkeys (1995) - another great Terry Gilliam film (he also did Brazil). This one is either a sci-fi flick dealing with time travel and the prevention of World War 3 or a somewhat depressing movie about mental illness.
The Fifth Element (1997)
Event Horizon (1997)
Starship Troopers (1997)
Pitch Black (2000)
Equilibrium (2002)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
Serenity (2005) - better once you've seen its TV predecessor, Firefly
Sunshine (2007)
Moon (2009)
Super 8 (2011)
Looper (2012)
Pacific Rim (2013)
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

The original Terminator does one thing that the sequels could never do: It makes you believe the bad guy might actually win.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Saw Event Horizon again last night. For a Paul W.S Anderson film it's great, and that is saying something. It does fall foul of typical horror tropes towards the end but it's an entertaining ride with a interesting premise and a great soundtrack. Laurence Fishburne has a few cracking lines in it.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Yeah, Event Horizon could have been sooooo much more if there wasn't all the studio interference. There's a workprint VHS floating around with all the original core and special F/X stuff with about 20 minutes of footage or so.Pointman wrote:Saw Event Horizon again last night. But really, dunno if this ties into that or not, but the most egregious thing about EH is that the use every goddamn stock sound in the book. Every stock scream, explosion, door opening, etc. is pulled from the book. Still, it's a fun film that gets pretty nasty at times, and that I can appreciate.

Funny you should say that as I always listen out for a "Wilhelm Scream" whenever I watch a film but I didn't catch one in this. I was chuffed however to hear a totally digitised sounding Wilhelm Scream in Tron Legacy the other day. I missed it on first viewings, nice one Tron sound designers.drauch wrote:But really, dunno if this ties into that or not, but the most egregious thing about EH is that the use every goddamn stock sound in the book. Rewatched Labyrinth (1986), so 80's cheesy and glittery-dark it hurts, but it's awesome in some ways like the insane overall work they put on the scenery and puppetry.
Bowie's pants aren't cool though.
Going to rewatch The Dark Crystal next, IIRC it's kind of boring and cheesy too, but it's the current subgenre I'm exploring (more or less dark/gothic fantasy and faerytale stuff).

Aces Go Places
Early 80s HK movie that I found to be pretty funny. Only one comedy bit really felt out of place in the movie, but I gotta say the tight rope sequence was my favorite. That impending moment of death followed by the comedy relief that ends it was good. Was also fun watching the guy who they were trying to catch save their lives over and over. I'll probably check out the second movie tonight.

Great movie. So raw and original and, well--brutal. People had been recommending it to me for ages and when I finally watched it... Wow.Pointman wrote:Finally saw the original Oldboy recently and I can't believe it took me so long to sit down and watch it.
Wild Card
Jason Statham continues to play roughly the same character in every movie and I don't really have a problem with it. This was cool, but the side characters and how their stories/motivations related to the lead had me confused for a good while as to what the movie was actually supposed to be about. It almost felt like a drama with a few dubstep/super slo-mo fight scenes sprinkled in just for kicks. The overall look of the movie, however, (colors, cinematography) was great.

Primer messes with your head, it's a time travel film for people who enjoy hard maths. I like to think I was clever enough to understand it. But only just. Was the director's follow up, Upstream Color, any good?
Re: Movies you've just watched
I enjoyed it. I actually went to a Q&A with Shane Carruth and double feature of Primer and Upstream Color when it released. The person I went with hated it... but they also never saw Primer. It's not as big of a mind fuck nor complex, but it's still pretty unique. I remember someone in the crowd asked Shane, "what was it really about?" and the majority of the crowd boo'd the person haha.
The timeline for Primer has been plotted out at a few different places which can help if you sort of follow along while watching in subsequent viewings

Re: Movies you've just watched
Damn, that makes the timeline for Interstellar seem pretty pedestrian by comparison. I'll have to pluck up the courage to watch it again sometime. Funny story about Carruth there, I'll have to give Upstream Color a go. What I do like about his films are the lack of hand holding. So many filmmakers use that method of storytelling (even Christopher Nolan) that it kinda feels like they are insulting your intelligence. I like it when you have to watch something so intently in order to actually work out what is going on. True Detective did this to brilliant effect.

I saw The Babadook on Monday night. Highly recommend it. It's not outright "scary" by any means, but it is very thought provoking and dark.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Werner Herzog's Nosferatu. I really expected more, but it wasn't bad. I doubt I'll be watching it over the original or even Coppolla Dracula anytime soon. There were a few standout moments added in this tale that worked very well, but overall it failed to wow me. It comes off like a movie about a town of mentally handicapped people who are all incapable of identifying danger.
I recently watched the low budget Shadow Of The Vampire, which stars Willem Dafoe as the actual vampire Dracula hired on to play Nosferatu in the original Murnau film. It was fairly cheesy as well but mighty entertaining. Willem pulls an Ozzy at one point. No, not peeing on the Alamo but the other thing.

Picked up the Blu-Ray version of the horror anthology series titled "The ABCs of Death 2" which is a sequel to the original film of the same name. The sequel clocks in at a whopping two hours and two minutes (which is appropriate given the fact that it has another brand new 26 horror genre themed shorts to check out at your leisure).
The Blu-Ray & DVD versions of John Wick are already out now (it debuted 2-03-2015 stateside) and managed to snag that one as well. Interesting code of honor shown within the hotel between the staff and the usual clientele. Even the cleaning crew is kept on a retainer if it needed be (they're paid quite well indeed).
