AV Setup Isues - 203Rxi, PVM 20L5, XSelect-D4

Post by Thamiel »

Hey lads, thought I'd have a play with my XSelect and Wii as a of having the Wii run in RGB (480p) along with the rest of my consoles. The current chain:

Wii (Component 480p) > XSelect D4 > Extron 203Rxi > PVM 20L5

The resulting image is quite dark (even with the Extrons Level Boost at max) and quite jittery, looks like some sort of vertical sync tremble.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what i'm doing wrong? Cheers.

I'm wondering why you have that chain of devices, instead of plugging component directly into the 20L5.

I have quite a few video devices laying around to tinker with, thought this might be a relatively simple chain to get the Wii into RGB. Only have the one RGB/Component input on the 20l5.

I had to think about this a while, and I think I understand now. You're trying to break the laws of sampling theory, by getting information out of the signal that doesn't exist. That, or you don't trust the PVM-20L5's component decoding :P

You'd have to figure out a way to start with RGB right out of the Wii. You can transcode to RGB, but why? The PVM-20L5 does that for you; as you find, unnecessary conversions of analog signals don't improve the information carried. They only degrade the analog image and invite problems.

Some real-world testing done here:

Cheers for the reply mate. Basic goal of this is just to avoid swapping cables, I definitely don't expect the wii to look any better simply because it's in rgb. Truth be told I can't tell the difference between yuv and rgb, or more it's so minuscule that it dosnt bother me.

Just kind of curious as to why the 203rxi is having problems, I got it in the hopes of having some physical centering controls as ducking into the 20l5 service menu regularly can be rather annoying.

Hmm, I should have gone with my first instinct then. You could get a switch with RCA inputs that will handle both component and RGB, and then use adapters back to BNC for the 20L5 connection. That will free up the equipment; the centering stuff does sound nice, hope you have success in troubleshooting that.
