Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate support
I just got a new desktop and I need a monitor, I'm looking for something on a stand that will fit on a small computer desk. That I can adjust from Tate to Yoko on the fly. I also want to know whats a good size and shape for this?
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

Re: Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate sup
If the desk is small I bet you won't want something bigger than 24".
Only for PC or will there be some external sources use ? (consoles, BR player, stuff like that).
If your PC can handle 1920x1200p resolution easily then a 24" 16:10 is nice.
Otherwise a classic 1920x1080p (Full-HD) but no good ones come with a rotating stand included (gotta buy one separately).
Also; do you prefer a more responsive type (snappier with only little smearing), or one with deeper black tones and contrast (much better for movies but you may notice a bit of smearing sometimes, while playing fast 3D games like FPS for instance).
^this is for choosing between IPS and VA type panels.

Thanks for the reply. Movies are a bit more important to me then FPS's. Could you recommend a stand?

Re: Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate sup
If movies are more important then a VA (AMVA+) panel will be perfect.
If you happen not to live in the Americas pick this one: http://www.iiyama.com/gl_en/products/pr ... 2483hsu-1/
Best in the all-rounder category. Rotating stand included.
Otherwise try to get one of the BenQ's with VA panel;
BL2410PT (rotating stand included)
GW2460HM (buy stand separately)
For the stand I can only tell you need one that's at least VESA 100x100 compliant, and supports portrait/landscape rotation, like this one for instance;
http://www.amazon.com/Crimson-DS1-Singl ... itor+stand
You may find one cheaper with a bit of searching. Availability is different in the Americas and Europe of course so take your time.

Also interested in purchasing a new monitor for myself to play shmups:
http://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-24-inch-L ... rds=VG24QE
How's that one?
Is there a better option out there? I'm not too concerned with picture quality as long as it looks nice, definitely not a snob when it comes to extreme color accuracy but I certainly don't want things displayed incorrectly. Main concern is delay.

Nope not that one, it's got a crappy TN panel and you don't want that (awful viewing angles = no good in tate/portrait).
- Have a look here (not too old discussion): http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51254
- Here for a good overview: http://wecravegamestoo.com/forums/monit ... ssage.html
You can definitely trust this guy's recommendations ^
Check the 1920x1080 IPS and VA in particular if you want something versatile and fast.
- And here if you're looking specifically for larger VA monitors (27"/32"): http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1803228
My top picks:
VA -> iiyama xb2783hsu-b1 or BenQ bl2700ht
IPS -> lg 27mp75hm-p or one just below like the 27mp65hq-p (need to buy rotating stand separately)
All but the BenQ exist in 24" size.
For illustration here's an LG 27mp65hq-p a guy recently put in his cab;

And an iiyama xb2783hsu-b1 on a desk;

@Xyga:
Btw thanks to your recommendation I bought an iiyama ProLite XB2783HSU - it's great! The only downsides so far are it's inability to display 24p signals (not so great for BD movies) and the fact that it's unable to display 720x400 signals (as used by old MS-DOS games) aspect ratio correct: They should be displayed in 4:3, but the display strictly zooms them to 16:9 and there's nothing you can do against that

Re: Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate sup
Well, aside from some dedicated (often expensive) models, very few standalone pc lcd monitors are 'video oriented' with support of such things, to compensate for what they lack in pure video content support, you'd need a beyond-average BD player with integrated scaling and format conversion, or an external video scaler to also get full correction of older and unconventional resolutions and rates.
No issues at 60Hz or if using some decent computer and codecs though.
I mean let's not forget monitors aren't tv's !
AFAIK the only thing standard 16:9 monitors can do today is display more or less correctly/smoothly 'common' video/broadcast standards that are equal or close to computer resolutions at 'normal' 60Hz. Some do 50Hz and interlaced modes too, but nothing more, this is as far pc lcd monitors go in terms of flexibility.
It's too bad tv's don't equal the low lag and response time performances of most decent monitors today, but if the qualities of both worlds converged into a single product category, the manufacturers would weep at their lost profit...

So no 1ms response monitors that aren't TN? =/.
Can't recall what my last monitor was that had a swivel for tating but it was an old Samsung in 2006 or so. I'd imagine it was a TN panel then and I didn't notice anything awful, perhaps I'm just not that anal about the picture.

Re: Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate sup
Don't be fooled by the "1ms" marketing BS, response time isn't explained by a single digit in milliseconds, and motion blur is a complex topic.
If you want to learn about response time, lag, and motion, I suggest you visit pcmonitors.info or tftcentral.co.uk who have detailed and still easy to read articles on those topics.
That monitor was also 144Hz capable, which is a thing aimed a FPS players who are using a proper graphics card to play their games at higher refresh rates for reducing motion blur and/or 3D. You won't benefit from this when playing all your shmups that are around 60Hz games anyway.
If you want a good compromise between response and viewing comfort+quality for your pc and console shmupping, get yourself a monitor with an IPS panel and a rotating stand.
Those AMVA+ panels are good too of course, and better for movies and dark games, but some people still skip them because they still play a bit of fast-moving 3D games like FPS, where AMVA+ are not the best.

Alright thanks for the reply. Any recommendations for a zero lag monitor seeing as how it isn't advertised? I play more than just shmups, I play a lot of fighting games where input delay is a pretty big deal. Would prefer a 24" that has a swivel. If I absolutely must I'd buy a stand but want to avoid that. Thanks.

Re: Looking for a good monitor and monitor stand forTate sup
All the monitors I've mentioned have something like under 10ms lag. Several even under 8 or 6ms.
You'll find reviews with lag tests of each on reliable websites like pcmonitors, tftcentral, wecravegamestoo, prad.de (in German for the latter) and a few other in other languages like overclockers.ru (RU), playerwares.com (KR)
Zero lag doesn't really exist, it's rather around 4ms or under, and some no-scaler 1440p Korean monitors have even less depending on which measuring method is used, but I doubt all players on Earth whose performance would objectively be affected by even 10ms delay could fill my bathroom.

As a 24" 16:9, standard 1080p IPS panel for every day use I can still fully recommend the Dell 2414H (I use two of them). Very low lag and it tilts in both directions by default, which isn't this common, even with brandnew models.

Oh yeah I always forget about those! And they're maybe the fastest in the 24" category (both in response and lag)
Thanks for the reminder.

Ya they look great and have great reviews. Only downside I see is they have no DVI ports =/. They're $250 at newegg as well which seems to be the cheapest assuming this is the same:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
I may just bite and use a dual monitor setup, thanks for the recommendation.
EDIT: Nevermind, seems it does have a DVI port.

They're single link (1080p), so I wouldn't exactly call a missing DVI port a problem, when a DVI to HDMI cable is just a few $. They have no analogue inputs though. So, no XRGB-3, DC or SLG fun without any kind of converter.

On a side note they've made a 16:10 variant, the u2415, but be careful it completely lacks 16:9 aspect ratio support (HD consoles and BR/DVD players will display stretched!)

I got the Dell in, it looks and works great for emu's and my PC.
However I'm having a issue with it with the frame meister. When I hook it up at 720p or even 1080p, I get dots everywhere in like blacks like it's noise. I've tested various systems and they all do it. I don't get the dots with my pc on the monitor.
Any idea if this is a settings issue?
Same issue this guy had:

I've experienced a similar problem with my old laptop some time ago, the issue was clearly bad connectivity, I found a failing connector inside the hinge.
So I just replugged it firmly and the red dots/stains on dark areas disappeared completely.

It's mostly the same as the U2414H, just with a classic bezel and DVI + VGA + DP.
You can use an HDMI>DVI adapter if you really need HDMI.
Pretty much all other 24" 16:9 IPS displays don't include a rotating stand, some even don't have any VESA compliant mounting holes.
For an alternative to the Dell I would suggest the LG IPS monitors, like 23MP75HM (or 23MP65HQ if you don't need integrated speakers) but a rotation-capable generic VESA desk stand will have to be purchased separately.
TIP: the 23MP65VQ offers an extra DVI port, but it's harder to find.

Thanks Xyga
95% of the time i would be using a framemeister so looks like the prevoius model would be my best bet. Thought it would be nice to have the Dreamcast hooked up via vga but still pretty happy with how it looks via toro / scart and the mini so no biggie.
Do these monitors offer some sort of side bar setting for 4:3 content? Have been using an old plasma in my current setup for a couple of years and really notice how the pixels have aged inevenly due to me only displaying 4:3 content, or is that the nature of any screen type?

FWIW, I just noticed something on [H]ard Forum:
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=104 ... stcount=12
Can be done but I see that DisplayPort 1.3 hardware is maybe out in the middle / third quarter of the year. That might affect things substantially - we'll have to see if G-SYNC monitors on DP 1.3 would support DP 1.2a (and therefore FreeSync). I don't know if the special scaler allows it, but possibly nVidia doesn't have a choice in this matter.

You can use the Frame Meister on any of those, and for your Dreamcast well the U2414H is the only one lacking a VGA input (VGA to HDMI adapters do exist though, and according to Fudoh they're worth it).
4:3 Aspect Ratio
I think almost all existing 16:9 monitors offer a 4:3 aspect ratio setting with black bars/empty spaces (also called 4:3 'pilarboxed' mode, or simply 'aspect' setting, whatever) but you can always check the manuals on the manufacturer's websites if you want to make sure.
Screen Marking
Don't worry about screen marking, LCD's aren't affected by still pictures etc, and of course you can rotate at will.
Maybe the concern is only about 3440x1440 and not 2560x1440 ?Ed Oscuro wrote:FWIW, I just noticed something on [H]ard Forum:

That's an interesting question though, you know I realize I really don't know enough about G-Sync/FreeSync, DP, HDMI 2.0 n'shit.

Found a helpful table here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8533/vesa ... w-features
TBH, I don't think future proofing graphics is a big deal at the monitor specs we're talking about, and 1440p above 60Hz will be so much better than previous options that I don't really care about 4K
And for people not caring about adaptive sync one way or another:
