Scanline generator for Arcade LCD monitors?

Post by rolins »

So I took a chance and traded my Sony PVM 20L5 monitor for an 19" Arcade LCD monitor (5:4 aspect) that accepts CGA natively.

Yeah, I know "you idiot, why?!" Well the PVM monitor couldn't sync properly to any jamma pcb unless I calibrate it. I can discharge the CRT and replace caps for days, but I don't have the tools or experience to mess with calibrating a CRT. So I sold it off to a friend who always wanted one.

Anyway, I've been using this LCD monitor with my Neo-Geo Aes, Nes that's RGB modified, and arcade pcbs. They all sync perfectly including my Toaplan and Seibu boards without cutting off part of the top screen like my old XRGB-2 would do. Of course, the picture quality is not on-par with my Amiga 1080 RGB monitor, but for LCD I think its very good.

I can rotate it and change the horizontal/veritcal size and position very easily. Plus I don't have an ungodly mess of cables and stuff between my monitor and console. Just the power cable and RGBs cable coming out of the LCD. No more messing around with scart and XRGB or any other upscan converters anymore. I'm done with that.

The only con I is see lack of scanlines. I did build a diy scanline generator for the sake of trying, but it doesn't work with CGA resolutions. I really don't know how to do about this, but how do I create scanlines for CGA resolutions without resorting to CGA2VGA scaler + SLG combo?

You cannot. Arcadeforge offers (or offerered) a 15khz Scanline device as well, but you only get 120 scanlines instead of the 240 you want and it just doesn't resemble what scanlines should look like. The only way to get proper scanlines on a LCD is to convert your signal to 31khz first.

At the Underground Arcade at the Black Oak Casino in Jackson, CA, there's a Galaga/Ms. Pac-Man upright cab that sports a 15kHz low-res arcade LCD monitor setup. I played it and it looks razor-sharp. The only thing was, it was missing the obligatory scanlines for completeness.

I use one of those 31kHz scanline generators on such a traditional 31kHz LCD-based 16:10 aspect ratio PC monitor and that does work like a charm (when running those cool Xbox 360 shmup imports via VGA input).
