Why can't I ask certain questions?

Didn't know where to put this, but I asked a couple questions like which system is better for this shmup?

And it gets locked? Why? How do I distinguish between a question I'm allowed to ask versus a question I can't ask?
This is a shmup discussion board, so I'm really confused. Thought the idea was to promote discusssion. What good
does it do to limit it?

As a general rule, don't start a topic that already exists. If you have a question, first use the search bar to see if it yields any topics that might answer it. Feel free to necro-bump anything you find if you need more informtation.

For a simplistic question not really deserving of a full thread, such as "Which is the best version of shmup X" please use the "Shmup related questions that don't deserve a thread" thread. Imo if your initial topic post isn't generating discussion, and is just a very simple question, it probably doesn't warrant a full topic.

I'm not sure why there are really banned threads either, even if they've already been discussed someone might still bring something new. It's not like this board is overflowing with traffic or anything, it's kind of silly to discourage posting.

Because if you have 20 threads on the same topic it all becomes convoluted. If 20 threads exist and each one "brings something new," then you have 20 threads to pilfer through to find each little tidbit when all the information could be in one locale. Nobody discourages posting, only useless threads. Try going to a forum that doesn't moderate redundant threads and do a search. It can be a nightmare.

Why not sticky one thread that links to various threads that are commonly brought up? Call it something like FAQ, or READ ME BEFORE POSTING, something that is really obvious and hard to miss.

Generally if you just have one question about a game, it goes in that game's thread. It's probably already been covered, but no one's gonna throw paint on you for not wanting to spelunk.

We're definitely forbidden from discussing how we prefer to prepare eggs or bacon, however. Gotta remain kosher, after all - No fish on fridays.

In the OP's defense, many other forums flip out over necroing posts, so the more sensible bump-if-you-want method here might not be what he's used to.

I think it would depend on what sort of post you are necro-bumping, such as a post that has already been answered or moved to a different thread. Other than that, I don't think I've encountered a forum that was anti-old threads for the sake of being old. I don't see the logic in that.

I actually have seen many of them. Its ilogic and stupid IMO.

I love it when old threads are bumped. You can see what people were saying about the game years ago

limiting questions/threads to the original topic beats having to sort through dozens of "will this game be region free? is this game region free? please localize this game! why isn't this game on steam?" threads.

at least I'm glad I don't have to sort through those.

This is called Google. Anyway, threads pass in and out of relevance many times through the years.

FWIW, when was the last time it was updated? I don't think it has the last completed Top 25 thread, yet, for example. Maybe it should also link to the shmup streaming thread, as well?

I definitely prefer the pro-necromancy policy of shmups forum. IDK why so many forums prohibit it. I mean, obvs would be bad to bump one of the save state practice argument threads or something else like that, but generally it's interesting to see old threads.

Some forums get like five new threads asking the same question a day, in the same section.

It's extremely dumb and irritating especially for the people who (in the beginning at least) are kind enough to reply.
It also shows how lazy-as-fuck and vain people are not to bother reading down a few lines to see if there are similar/relevant threads.

Well, maybe it's related to some kind of traffic thing policy. There are plenty traffic-whore forums around.
Also plenty mods who don't give a crap anymore.
