Great work with the garage kit!
Can't even begin to imagine how one does the eyes and facial details
How does one build this stuff? Is it more than glue and paint involved?

Re: The LaserDisc thread
It’s a little more involved than that.
Some prep work needs to go into the kit before you reach the painting + gluing steps, such as flash removal from the resin, sanding the resin, repairing and/ or filling any holes and gaps found in the resin with putty, then back to sanding, and finally cleaning the resin in readiness for a coat of primer. The amount of prep work done before actual assembly and painting varies depending on the quality of the kit.
Painting the kit can be as complex and involved as the individual wants it to be. There’s a myriad of techniques (pre shading, pastel shading, dry brushing etc) outside of plain paint applied to a surface at your disposal. The onus is on the painter really and their ability.
Things like eyes take a bit of practice, but you can also purchase eye decals if you don’t have the confidence.
I won’t get into the materials and tools aspect as I’d rather keep this short, but it can be quite the lengthy process between opening the kit to having a finished product. There are heaps of helpful tutorial vids on YouTube about this stuff, and they can be an invaluable resource for those getting started.

Been a while since I last posted here. Got a few more LDs couple weeks ago but haven't had the chance to take any pics. Too busy moving house and all.
Anyhoo...

nothing particularly special in this lot. Despite already owning the complete set of Bubblegum Crisis singles, I thought I should still nab the Collection Box-set as while not really much of a rarity, I only see it up for auction every now and then. This set came complete with sleeve and full lot of id cards (not pictured because I'm a lazy fuck).
WANNA-BE'S was a cool find I guess considering I had no clue it was even on laserdisc.
Two Black Magic's because why not? (one on the right is a later release with digital audio)

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Great pickups!
I saw the BGC box set on eBay as well, I passed on it since, like you, already have the discs separately. Still, the red cover is striking and calling out to me
I also didn't know there were two Black Magic releases (only seen the newer one floating around) but that one's on my list to pick up on LD sometime, fun little OVA.
Also regret to say that I've yet to watch Robot Carnival (and Wanna-be's), but I'll get on to that shortly.

Wow -- Robot Carnival. I remember that one being sought after (and pricey) for a while. I do see one on Yahoo Japan now for 700 yen though.

Bubblegum Crisis and M-66 are amazing IMO, as usual the Laserdiscs in this threas are pretty much ALL things I would want

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Didn't realize Wanna-Be's was on Laserdisc as well! I think the only rip online that exists is a shit VHS, but I could be wrong. Never did finish the Casshan OVA myself; I need to get back on that. Excellent pickups as usual!

Re: The LaserDisc thread
If there's only a VHS rip available of Wanna-Be's online and no DVD release, I'd definitely see about ripping the LD and matching it with the fansubs, if they exist. Never heard of this OVA myself.
Nice pickup on Robot Carnival.

Yeah the LD is cheap now. DVD version on the other hand fetches for 10,000+ though.GaijinPunch wrote:Wow -- Robot Carnival. I remember that one being sought after (and pricey) for a while. I do see one on Yahoo Japan now for 700 yen though.
I believe a raw version of the Wanna-Be's laserdisc can be found on nyaa. Subtitles are hard-coded on the VHS rip, so finding a sub file may prove somewhat difficult.Pretas wrote:If there's only a VHS rip available of Wanna-Be's online and no DVD release, I'd definitely see about ripping the LD and matching it with the fansubs, if they exist. If anyone has ever wondered to themselves what 20kg of laserdiscs may look like, well do I have a haul for you!

Cookie for whomever correctly guesses the four non-Patlabor boxes. Being of German nationality would help I'd imagine (though I hear the translation differs somewhat from its Japanese name).

I'd most likely imagine Legend of the Galactic Heroes since it's German.
That and I may just know.

pretty much, just with a women's pro wrestling motif essentially. Which is amusing actually considering how the Dirty Pair/ Lovely Angels names came about.Raytrace wrote:hangon what is this 'Wanna-Bes' thing? Is it like 'Lovely Angels' ?

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Laserdiscs had the best collector's packaging of any physical media, aside from major exceptions like the shipping crate edition of Enemy Zero on Saturn.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Late to the party here but, yes, wow.
Dang.
Do you know if there's anything interesting in terms of extra material in that majestic Patlabor TV haul?
Just thinking since the box set for the OVAs was really interesting to sit through, with interviews and some high quality footage from Tokyo - High quality as in picture quality, not so much how well it portrait Tokyo itself
- Speaking of Patlabor, I saw that Maiden Japan will release the first movie on BD soon (got a pre-order down on that). I know there's already a BD release out there but I'm generally quite happy with the quality of their other Patlabor BD releases (except sub formatting) so that's yet another thing to look forward to.
My own audio/video setup, including LD player, will probably get dismantled tonight as I begin preparing for moving out...hopefully no harm will come to anything during transit. It's not far away at all but still

For someone like myself, and to the sounds of it, you, such a task will take twice as long as the normal human--but twice as worth it.Ji-L87 wrote:My own audio/video setup, including LD player, will probably get dismantled tonight as I begin preparing for moving out...hopefully no harm will come to anything during transit. I moved like a mile away a few years back and the packing process was a nightmare in meticulous prepping and boxing. So much bubble wrap, paper, and deciding on appropriate box size and weight. Gotta make sure your treasure doesn't get scuffed!

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Well, since it's about pro wrestling violence is to be expected. And since it's an OVA as well there might be the odd (. )( .) here and there. I'm not really into saying what's fine or not fine for kids to watch (since as kids, we wanted to watch all the things denied to us) but it's probably perfectly fine for teenagers. It might be more camp than they'd like howeverRaytrace wrote:will it be ok to watch with my son? he loves Plawres SanshiroDaneSaga wrote:pretty much, just with a women's pro wrestling motif essentially. If you don't already have it, the New OVA series Memorial Box seems to have a good amount of supplementary material. It has Music Clips, TV spots/ commercials, Patlabor Concert Tour ’92, and something entitled (forgive me in case I’m wrong as it’s entirely in kanji) ‘Koyasai Sanbonjime’, from which I can gather is a bunch of headgear staff and cast interviews that was filmed after the final recording session for the TV series.
I haven’t watched any of this myself, so I’m just reading from the back of the boxset.

If anyone is bored out of their mind this afternoon, I just put together an album of the collection so far:

Seeing as I had to move the discs anyway, it felt like a good opportunity.

Those Idol Defense Force Hummingbird ones with all the character fold-outs are great. One of the only OVAs that I was super excited for and never could get in to, unfortunately.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Yeah, I hadn't seen it before when I picked up the LDs but I rather liked it. The premise is fantastically dumb. A shame the last two episodes changed style (and hair colors) and tried to be more serious, which just didn't work. The final performance is pretty good though, I'll give it that.drauch wrote:Those Idol Defense Force Hummingbird ones with all the character fold-outs are great. Episode 2 is clearly the best of the bunch. Episode one suffers from slightly odd quality issues but is enjoyable (and the music gets stuck in my head every time), while episode two continues to be enjoyable while looking much better. The drawing style reminds me of Cat Girl Nuku Nuku actually...

I'd like to think it's a better Idol show than Idolm@ster...?

nihonkoku via proxy. Technically two separate shipments, but were shipped + arrived together.
