Arcade Stick for Mac and/or Xbox 360

Post by finisherr »

So, the logitech gamepad that I use for playing MAME crapped out on me after just getting into all of this about a month ago. I was entertaining the idea of purchasing an arcade stick just for my Mac since most of the shmups I'm playing are through SDL Mame on my MacBook. However, after noting that some of these modern shmups are getting released as ports for Xbox 360 here in the United States, and that some classic shmups are being made available through Xbox Live, I was thinking of getting one that is Xbox 360 and USB compatible. Does such an arcade stick exist...preferably one with a price point under 200?

You could set your aim on a Hori Real Arcade Pro type of 360 arcade stick that is both compatible with a 360 and PCs.

You have both the HRAP EX: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Real-Arc ... 735&sr=8-5

and the HRAP EX-SE (all Seimitsu parts) variant arcade joystick (currently out of production): http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Real-Arc ... 735&sr=8-8

I'm not sure it's safe to assume that if it's compatible for a PC then it is also compatible for a Mac. Do you know if these will work on a Mac?

My apologies, I don't own a Mac myself so I don't know if either one would work on a Mac setup. Many folks have had success using them on a PC running Win XP OS (& later released OS) for use with Mame/Mame32 emulation purposes.

They are quite durable arcade joysticks given their hefty size and layout...makes your 360 shmupping a pleasure (not to mention watching your overall scores get higher & higher over time). Of course, if you're not used to playing with the Japanese styled ball-top arcade joysticks, it'll take some time to get acquainted to their feel (which becomes second nature eventually).

It looks like I might buy this <a href="http://www.mayflash.com/pc/pc042/pc042.htm">Mayflash stick</a>. Everyone seems to say that it sucks, but it appears that I can swap out the stick and buttons for legit arcade parts if necessary. I don't have a file or soldering tool or anything like that, so hopefully I won't be too disappointed with the original product...

I connect a Wiimote to my MacBook via bluetooth with a program called Wiiji and use an arcade stick so that way it's wireless and I can tate the mac without fear of yanking on a wire and knocking my computer over. Until recently I've been using the Wii Hori stick, which isn't the greatest but does the trick... But I got lucky and picked up a TvC stick modded with Sanwa and Seimitsu parts and I love it. I've been using it a lot lately since I finally can get down on some ESPgaluda

I have a modded Datel Arcade Pro with Sanwa+Swimitsu parts, and it works fine on the Mac with MAME using these Xbox360 controller drivers, so basically any Xbox360-arcade stick should work.

The TattieBogle driver will allow you to use wired X360 controllers on your Mac.

However, the driver hasn't been updated in a good 18 months. As far as I'm aware it only works with official X360 controllers, if you're wanting to use a HRAP you need to fiddle around and add device IDs or something. I can test later if it works with a Hori Fighting Stick EX2 and a Hori VX-SA without any messing about. Also, if I leave the pad connected, when I bring the Mac Pro out of sleep all four green lights flash continuously which is quite annoying.

That would be awesome. I'm really trying to make up my mind because I haven't been able to play for the past few days without a working pad or stick.

Just tested the EX2 and VX-SA and it's not having any of it. The driver prefpane just doesn't recognise anything but my wired pad.

I know I did find the answer before, and it's on a Vs. Fighting forum somewhere around t interweb. I will be back with more info asap.

Edit: Without reading through it all, I'm sure this is the topic that should answer most questions.

I have a Madcatz Street Fighter 4 tournament edition arcade stick

It works with everything (PC/MAC etc) and you can get one for xbox 360 or PS3.

The parts are straight from japanese arcades and very high quality.

I use it for shmups and I'd recommend it. It's expensive, mine was £95 back when it was first released and I think the new Marvel vs. Capcom 3 sticks are the same price roughly. Buy a wired one though, not wireless so you can use it on your computer/Mac.

100% safe to do so. laptops are designed to run in any orientation and the MacBooks vent out of the back of the machine.
just don't knock it over.

this is kind of awesome.

as for the stick, i couldn't make up my mind so I just went to the store down the street and bought an inexpensive gamepad. might eventually get a hori pro and see how that works.

My Hori Real Arcade Pro EX wasn't working with the mac with the Tattieboggle driver installed. Fortunately the open source community started hacking on this driver to make it work for other sticks.

Even these drivers weren't working for the EX. So, I modified some of the code to get it to work. My code changes passed tests and have been merged into the latest release. So, folks can use this stick with their Macs!

You can download the driver here: https://github.com/d235j/360Controller/releases
