Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
So I've been switching between these two discs lately and one thing I've noticed on both is that I've never come to a name entry screen and every high score I get just has the name CAV.
Am I missing something? I don't use restarts when I die or anything.

That's how they roll nowadays.
I'd guess maybe it's because you are able to tell if a score has been made on the original PCB or not, just by looking at the score table.

Ah, gotcha. I thought it was just something I was doing wrong on the 360. Can never tell sometimes.
Thanks!

I was just testing Akai Katana Shin now and was intrigued by the same thing.

It's because you're using the default mode, which allows continuing. IIRC continuing doesn't allow you to enter a score.
You need to choose ranking play or something similar, that only gives you one continue and the option to upload scores - then you'll get a name entry screen.

Cave really see's console players differently than arcade players. Console players only play competitively online, so why bother entering initials locally when they are all you own scores? If someone else wants to play your console, then they can create their own profile. Cave has this new market all figure out!

Uhh, continuing has never had an effect on whether or not you can enter initials in any arcade release, ever. And I'm fairly certain playing MMP/PS 360 or Akai KatanaSkykid wrote:It's because you're using the default mode, which allows continuing. IIRC continuing doesn't allow you to enter a score.

Shin in score attack doesn't change the no-initials behavior.

I thought continuing/restarting in DDP DFK disallowed name entry, and I'm pretty sure you can't enter your name in the default (top) option for AKS.
Not 100% sure now you've said that though.

That's the mode I play, and there is no name entry when I die.Skykid wrote:StarCreator wrote:Skykid wrote: and I'm pretty sure you can't enter your name in the default (top) option for AKS.

I can't play score attack(the second option) because my JP360 came used and, unfortunately, banned from Live. So it looks like I'll always be CAV!

There's no way to enter initials on those games, score attack or no. To paraphrase Booji Boy, "We're all C-A-V".

Pretty lame considering playing to bump your friends scores off the #1 spot is still fun to do offline.Thjodbjorn wrote:There's no way to enter initials on those games, score attack or no. To paraphrase Booji Boy, "We're all C-A-V".

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Everyone gets to be known as CAV and it only shows a score and what character was used in the local high scores table(on PS/MMP). I'd like to know who at CAVE thought that was a good idea. Futari lets me put my initials in and other people can put theirs in as well so you can compare scores locally, but of course Cave wasn't responsible for that port.

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
So since we all think it sucks, howzabout we correspond with Cave? Isn't it much easier to reach them nowadays? I agree that a primal early memory for me was when I broke through and achieved a high score on an arcade machine and I was able to enter initials; man that was a true "hall of fame" feeling...I want it back!

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Indeed, let's hassle them about a patch

Perhaps you could beg Cave for that like you whined for Death Smiles 2X patch. I don't know if you're feeling bothered about bringing attract mode back as well.
M2 were the ones who developed the Futari port.Marurun wrote:Futari lets me put my initials in and other people can put theirs in as well so you can compare scores locally, but of course Cave wasn't responsible for that port.

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Indeed they were, but Espgaluda 2 lets you do it too last time I checked and I think DFK as well. Others too I am sure. I would really love to hear their reasoning for not having name entry in the newer stuff :/

10 : 1 says it was just an easy way to avoid some bug/issue... I struggle to see it as a 'feature'.

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
and since we're all debating on this, what's with all the Japanese menus in Akai Katana?
why not keep the same previous standard?
possible to patch for [optional] English menus?

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Heaven forbid they use Japanese menus in a Japanese game.
Akai Katana Shin's menus manage to be incredibly pretty and be the most functional menu design yet at the same time. I wouldn't change anything about them.

Its strange because they used English menus in EVERY other 360 port, thats all.StarCreator wrote:Heaven forbid they use Japanese menus in a Japanese game.

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
I think its simply an aesthetic choice as it just fits the theme better since the game is supposed to take place in Japan and deals with ninjas etc. Like with the pcb of Guwange when you get to the enter initials screen it uses Japanese characters instead of the usual roman characters.
Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
So...Do anyone knows if are there some pictures of the english version menus online or something?

I have the PAL release, I can post pics of that menu if that's what you want.

Re: Name Entry in MMP/PS and Akai Katana Shin
Just buy the US version of Akai Katana. It's like 5 times cheaper than the JP release.
