Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Simple question. I choose it because I got tired of looking at a horrible picture when playing retro games and wanting to bring it up to CRT standards. Kind of strange how S-video on a CRT can still look better than if you were to plug Component straight into your HDTV. I did not choose it because I "No longer had the room" or some other excuse people tend to use. If you had room for a CRT back in the day then you have room for it today.

Better picture quality and I lived in europe so it wasn't more expensive than going any other route =)
But waht do you mean "no longer had the room" excuse? How does that relate to RGB?

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
I can remember seeing a SNES RGB scart cable for sale in one of the game shops in my area back in '95. Needless to say I bought it and even though I had a 8 year break from gaming after that I still remembered to buy a RGB scart cable for each new console if possible once I got back into it. It's like it was still stuck in my head from all those years ago and the poor little yellow, red and white cable (composite) that came with the consoles just wasn't going to cut it anymore.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
I read about RGB on here all the time, and got really curious about it. Bought a SCART cable and a converter, and hooked up my Saturn.
Decided to do it with all my systems.
Actually, before I had that particular TV, I didn't have a TV with component in. So, I didn't even know about anything above S-Video (other than VGA).
My RGB setup is still CRT though, and takes up much space. Luckily, I have a room reserved for it.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
I saw some reviews for RGB cables at the time when Super Mario Sunshine came out. Bought a cable for my Gamecube and since then I've stuck with RGB. Not a hard decision for us here in Europe, I just wish that I knew about RGB back in the SNES and N64 days.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Same, because in Europe for like 30 years it's just been a matter of buying a cable at the nearby general, AV, or games store.
Heck the 16bit and even the NEC machines (in France at least) came with a genuine RGB scart cable or adapter.
Just a few bucks and zero effort got us clean RGB on our sweet RGB-capable telly's.
MHAHAHAHA ! poor American peasants.

Simple: All my retro systems output high-quality RGB signals.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Euro gamers got rid of 50Hz in the early 90's with console mods and imports stores. Don't know how good it was in other countries but in France you could find a game store carrying everything you wished for even in a small town.
So true RGB, 60Hz, jp and us imports; we got them all with little effort (at a price though, but the economy was much better then)
This was the golden age that lasted until the Wii/360/PS3 generation. Most specialized stores across the country went belly up since.
The only limitation in the beginning was 50Hz capped TV's were slowly disappearing but still very common, so you had to hunt for a 60Hz-capable, which often meant new and possibly quite expensive for kids/teenagers.
And yeah this may belong to Off-Topic section lol.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
I don't really consider this off topic as it's still applying to hardware.
Anyway another reason why I choose to do RGB is it's much easier to do so now in the US compared to say 15 years ago when no one knew what the heck you were talking about and buying a display that supported Scart was really expensive. Most Americans were and sadly still are completely fine playing their retro games with Composite.

Sadly here in Europe most people are completely fine with 50Hz and won't even understand why it sucks if you tell them. At least they use RGB cables

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Well, plenty of Europeans play with composhit too.
It's always been a thing only people with more-than-average interest in games care about, and most of the time you had to buy the 'good' cable separately, mess with stuff on the back of the telly, and push a button on the remote... to most it was like learning Chinese and they couldn't see the difference in quality anyway.
Still applies [true story]; hd console on hd display, composhit vs hdmi, audience (colleagues waiting to play soul calibur V during lunch break); "why do you bother it's the same, now can we play?"

Ugh, we also had a 360 at work that was connected with composite. We tried to play SF IV on it but you couldn't even read the move list, but it was never changed to HDMI because if was good enough for the crappy games that used camera controls.

To the OP, because my NES made me cry with terror the first time I plugged it into my new plasma.

I remember the first time we got an RGB cable for our Playstation, it was like all our games were new!

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
The first time that I witnessed a RGB monitor/system was at ToysRus with a SNES kiosk that they had setup. I didn't know that it was RGB at the time but the screen and colors looked very sharp and just popped like nothing else I had every seen. That was back in 1992 or so. In 1996 I ordered my first Wells Gardner RGB monitor from MAS Systems (they advertised in the back of Diehard Gamefan Magazine). The monitor cost me $1000 with RGB cables for the Saturn and PSX. When I got the monitor I was blown away at the picture quality and ever since have been hooked on playing my games with the best picture possible. In fact, I found this website while searching for RGB stuff and got into shmups after looking around site.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Pish, pash. I am not at all sensitive to playing games in 50hz. Of course I make the minimal effort to play games as they were meant to originally, but I am perfectly happy with PAL if that is all that is available to me at the time.blizzz wrote:Sadly here in Europe most people are completely fine with 50Hz and won't even understand why it sucks if you tell them. There is a tendency to overreact to this issue here in Europe.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
Hehe, from my experience the people that tell you it's absolutely outrageous to play a game in 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz are the same people that'll tell you that there's no benefit to playing a game in 60 fps instead of playing it in 30 fps (with frequent, long-lasting drops to 10 or 15 fps).
The PAL bars characteristic for shoddy PAL conversions are more of a real problem, but I for one always owned a setup where I could simply eleminate these by zooming the picture vertically.

Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
This rather literal arcade rat got a taste when he temporarily got a busted vga box working on his Dreamcast. Since then, I have been slowly getting cables and/or mods to get rgb out. One example is my PS1: I modded in dedicated h/v-sync jacks, and use a PS2/3 component cable for the color lines and audio. Many of the arcade compilations I have for PS1 never looked better.
Am still trying to figure out if a proper rgbhv mod is possible on a v7 ps2. I found where to tap sync in the service manual, but not rgb or disable Synv-on-Green.

Ahh man. Reminds me of an abandoned project I have with one of my PS2s (currently in pieces), although it was one of the earlier models. Pulled a bit of reading from this page, but it doesn't really have much about V7. http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:p ... 2_rgb_syncNightSprinter wrote:Am still trying to figure out if a proper rgbhv mod is possible on a v7 ps2. Re: Why did you choose to RGB your setup?
I actually have the service manual for the SCPH-39000 series. It's just I only see labeled points for CSync/HSync/VSync. Nothing reliable for tapping RGB before hitting the A/V connector, and definitely nothing for disabling SoG. A few friends of mine in the Bemani community were interested in an RGB mod to hopefully clear the image output up a bit.
