I usually just go for some of the funkier tech-abstract 3d stuff from deviantart or the like, or some nice photography. It depends. I rarely have any type of game/character related wallpaper, although I was rockin' a Mushi one for a while.

Konfabulator (now Yahoo! Widgets). It's almost exactly like Apple's Dashboard in 10.4 (the back-end is a little different so the widgets aren't compatable).
It's easy to write your own widgets, too - a combination of Javascript for the logic and XML for the layout.
And, Yahoo! Widgets works on Windows, too.

That Psyclapse logo brings back memories. What relationship did they have with Psygnosis? Well I might as well stick in my xbox 360 wallpaper in here too. I don't have an HDTV, so this is on the 32" SDTV with a crap camera. 
It looks better than it does in the picture....honest.
