Shmups Forum Pet Parade
Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
I used to raise various arachnids, insects, myriapods, and the occasional other odd arthropod or whatever years back, so I could have been our niche collector. I could have been something. I'd post my broads that I got through human trafficking, but then the thread would probably disappear.

Family pet. Named Tabby by my brother when we were little. He has aged gracefully to become a creature of true magnificence.
Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade

my 10 year old cat... she's been a little less shy around people since ive moved. i'd love to get a dog soon, i grew up with australian shepherds.
Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
Nice pic and story of your dog, BIL. The dog being timid even shines through the picture.
I also have a pet, a cat named Chilie after Red Hot Chili Peppers. The cat lives at my mother's house since a number of years. Chilie's 14 now and she always greets me with lots of MEOWs when I visit my mother. If i'd name her today I would be tempted to name her Poko after Uo-Poko from Dangun Feveron as both cats MEOW a bit too much. Also, poko sounds like Swedish word "pucko" which means "stupid" in Swedish so that would be accurate as well.

So I managed to get a photo of my other cat. This is Tiger, she's much better behaved than Dante but also much more aloof.

Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
As Mr Artillery just highlighted this thread in the Show Yourself annual thread, and I've a new arrival...
Ronnie the degu needed adopting (left on his own unsold in a pet shop for a year, so homed by a charity (though the pet shop, so props to them); Degu's are typically sold in groups. Ronnie was isolated from a group after some brawling and nobody wanted to buy a sole degu. Then my wife and I saw him, and they were after people that were around a lot to give him the interaction he missed through his solitary situation. We both work from home, and were smitten by him. First pet in some time, and he's a mischievous, smart and interactive wonder. Very happy, and after a year on display in the bright lights of a pet shop, and rarely handled, he's already happily interacting with us. We interact with him daily, and he seems to love free time out the cage scampering about our bedroom and climbing the furniture).
Lovely guy, even if he ate some of my comics (the one room he won't be going in houses my shmup collection!).

He's holding a hazelnut in its shell. Give him one and he gets in a frenzy; biting it, tossing it in the air, rolling it, hiding it and uncovering it again. If only my life were so simple.

I got Azrael two years ago.

Now she's a full blown chubbo.

Last month we got another kitten, Luna.

She's still quite wee, she was only a pound when we got her. Rae was suspicious of her at first but they're getting along well now.

Good enough reason for me to start leaving out antifreeze for the scabby-faced strays around here. I suppose this is why we have no squirrels, and the only birds are pigeons and crows.system11 wrote: Non house cats are indiscriminate killers causing untold damage to ecosystems they were never meant to be a part of, and nightmare problems for neighbours, but they're cute so people refuse to see it.

This is Merc (as in Mercedes, not mercenary), sleeping in a home-made... home.

He is ever hungry and a bit of a dick sometimes. But I can't stay mad at him for long.

Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
No, they really do kill everything. We used to have a variety of birds and many nests in our garden - all gone, only the squirrels remain since next door got two fucking cats.Mortificator wrote:Tell me that's a joke.rancor wrote:Good enough reason for me to start leaving out antifreeze for the scabby-faced strays around here. I think Mortificator was questiong rancor, not you.
There is no doubt that felines kill numerous birds every year and are severely damaging the ecosystem. This is coming from an owner and lover of cats my entire life. I live in a suburban area and keep mine inside; my parents live out in the country and most stay in, while a few trek outside momentarily. The outside cats rarely get birds because they have a common food source at the house and the area is so sparse with hiding spots, which is quite different for neighborhoods where a cat can creep up from anywhere. Most sources point towards feral and strays with no home to turn to. Most fat house cats simply don't care or aren't fast enough, but when the world doesn't spay and neuter and constantly dumps unwanted pets, there's millions of cats running around they're going to kill the easiest thing: birds. Also, look at many species of birds and their reliance on feeders and human food. Easy targets. Invasive species are a pretty dangerous game.

You're right. Feral cats are a problem, but leaving out antifreeze for them is disgusting, not to mention counterproductive; squirrels and many birds will happily drink it too.drauch wrote:I think Mortificator was questiong rancor, not you.

Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
Agree there. Not a fan of poisoning in any sense with creatures that are capable of feeling pain (arthropods can't; still sorta debatable with certain crustaceans), especially since death by antifreeze is multiple stages of torment, which also still kills children every year due to the ethylene glycol sweetness. I know in the states that bittering agents have been agreed to be put in mixtures in all fifty states, but I haven't done the research to see how effective that is, since it only takes a teaspoon to kill a middle weight cat, and not a whole lot more for dogs and children that get in to it.

Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
I'm an absolute animal-loving vegetarian softy, so certainly against anything like vigilante home-brew poisoning. But I certainly recognise the problems not only feral – but also free-ranging domestic – cats potentially cause local ecosystems. There are so many domestic cats roaming the gardens where we are there's been some suggestion they've impacted the number of birds and small rodents, cutting the food supply to natural predators (weasels, foxes etc.), and preventing the distribution of bird-spread seeds so important to the wider ecosystem. I've also read in the UK domestic cats alter the local ecosystem more through changing bird behaviour than directly through reducing numbers. And I've read that cats' impact in this way is negligible, so who knows!?
What I do know is our local magpies aren't afraid. They are often out hassling and chasing cats.

Re: Shmups Forum Pet Parade
We have a cat (not my choice) and she fucking sucks. She goes to the litter box and the whole apartment smells like burnt hair. When everyone else goes to sleep, she starts to sound like a fucking alarm clock, waking up the kids. She's killed my re-upholstered arcade stools and her fur is everywhere. She's not allowed outdoors though, so at least she doesn't take shits in the kids sand box or kill small animals.
