Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous
Anyone else playing this? Played the original?
I never played the original but am enjoying every minute of the new game. Seems to be one of those titles you ever love or hate, there's no in between.
I recently ordered an Oculus Rift after reading all the rave reviews about it with Elite.

Thinking about getting this. I think some of the design looks a bit bland compared to EVE and Star Citizen. Can it be played with mouse and keyboard or is it better with a stick?
Re: Elite Dangerous
I haven't tried mouse and keyboard, but an XBox 360 controller does the trick very nicely indeed. If you get serious you'll want a HOTAS setup though.Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:Thinking about getting this. I think some of the design looks a bit bland compared to EVE and Star Citizen. I also thought the design was somewhat bland and was holding out for Star Citizen, but I bought this game on a whim. IMO the game is so well put together and immersive, it totally nails the feeling of flying a small fragile ship through such a huge galaxy, awe-inspiring stuff. Star Citizen has some big shoes to fill.
I'm having a blast doing mundane things like transporting shipments of vegetables from one system to another. Haven't even scratched the surface with the other roles available i.e. bounty hunting, exploration, mining etc

I'm kicking myself for not preording the mercenary edition when I had the chance. Now I'm probably going to wait until the consumer Oculus Rift is released and buy a nice HOTAS and the game. By that time a lot more features will be patched into the game.
In the meantime, I'll be entertained by watching these types of videos.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: Elite Dangerous
A buddy of mine recently got the Oculus Rift MK2 and he was telling me about this game but this is the first I've seen actual footage. Way cool. Very tempting...

Re: Elite Dangerous
I picked up this game and have just been making enough money by trading to work my way up to a Cobra Mk 3. I'm planning on outfitting it for a multitude of roles but like I posted in the awesome stuff you just bought thread i've got a HOTAS on it's way ( A Saitek X52 Pro )
I will be getting an occulus for it but I don't want to go with a Dev kit so i'm going to wait until the consumer version is available.

The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.
Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

There's a couple of trading tools available which make it easy to determine the maximum profit route for your particular ship.
See here for an online tool:
http://elitetradingtool.co.uk/
and here's a native Windows tool:
http://www.slopey.com/ED/BPC.exe
Details are entered into these databases via crowd sourcing, so there may be errors at times but I haven't found any as yet.

Re: Elite Dangerous
I'm going to wait until I've got a Rift for this one. Played Elite Dangerous a little with Rift and a nice flight stick set-up at an event, and that's given me a taste for doing the same at home.
I loved what I played though. Dogfighting and VR go very well together.

Been playing this for the last few nights. Just got my Eagle. Gf wants to know what a "friendship drive" is.

I don't know about anyone else, but videos like this showing an experience unique to the game do a good job of selling me on it.Gozer wrote:I'm kicking myself for not preording the mercenary edition when I had the chance. Elite: Dangerous seems to scratch my space-sim itch that I still sometimes fire up FreeSpace for. I could see myself getting deep into it. Not quite enough to jump in at $60 or to get an Oculus Rift for. Or to get a new (expensive) flight stick and throttle setup for, since my near-ancient SideWinder Precision Pro still works, even on Windows 7. But this game is definitely something I'll look out for.
While I'm here, how is this Thrustmaster HOTAS X as an entry-level flight stick? The price seems right for this.

Re: Elite Dangerous
I backed this at kickstarter, and been playing it little bit since gamma release. I also tried this at my friends place with Oculus Rift, and that was easily one of the most memorable gaming experiences I ever had. I'm so happy I was a backer at this, this is pretty much dream fulfillment for me
