Well, I did indeed make it to a few meets, had a blast and met some lovely people (shout out to the Casino Crew) so yeah, nailed that one. :)

Heh, I actually did almost everything on my list somehow. Didn't actually get SDOJ or Futari God clears, but I made a lot of progress towards them.

This new year should be fun :3

I suppose my current high score (around 4 bil) is decent but I haven't had as much time to play it as I would have liked. I'll keep pushing the score. In fact, my only goal for 2015 is to get a memorable score in Futari God Mode.

I improved my Type A score but didn't stream anything on twitch.

Can't remember if I bought my current PC this year or if it was the year before that. Haven't streamed anything this year but I did a few translations.

Still need to do this.

completed the most important ones, ignored all the other games I wrote goals for since I spent most of the year playing Shoot the Bullet and the rest playing Fairy Wars. That's ok, It's fun to do scrub runs in random games too, I just didn't end up doing much of that, so I know I could've completed the other goals... I just did more important stuff instead

Icarus wrote:Goals for 2014:
• Getting somewhat decent again at Battle Garegga through regular play.
• Pink Sweets v1.00 Arcade Mode (X360) ALL.
• 30mil in Ibara.
• Whatever else comes to mind once the above list is done, as I'm purposely keeping my list very short and focused this year.
Main list:
• Battle Garegga: E.18 to Stage 7 BOSS
http://www.twitch.tv/icarusfw/c/5747017 (24/12/14 - improvement from C.32, F.8 potential)

• Pink Sweets: B.57 to Stage 6 (haven't played since end-Jan)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYFfTNevniU (25/1/14 - improvement from 6.1mil, G.2 potential)

• Ibara: - (haven't played it at all this year)

Others:
• Battle Bakraid: 32.43mil ALL, Normal
http://www.twitch.tv/icarusfw/c/5375444 (27/10/14 - maybe 6hrs total practice since Jan, just to sharpen chain routes, play it casually on-stream, 70mil potential)

• Crimzon Clover: 8770oku ALL, Original
http://www.twitch.tv/icarusfw/c/4151564 (14/4/14 - practice for Stunfest 2014, was Western record, 9800oku potential)

• Raiden Fighters: 50.7mil ALL
http://www.twitch.tv/icarusfw/c/4274203 (18/5/14 - fun attempt to beat old PB during TRP-STGT, 52mil potential)

Notes:
• Graduated with a Degree this year, so Jan-Jul was spent focusing on studies, and Jul-Oct was unwinding, enjoying my summer and stuff. Sporadic play for most of the year, several months not playing at all, until after I returned from Japan mid-Nov where I started to practice a little more regularly.
• However, Mac is now currently out of commission (possible logic board failure), so no streams or STG via MAME, doujin etc until it gets repaired after the New Year.
• Looks like I'm playing Pink Sweets again to pass the time. :3

Well, 2 out of 5 for me. Which were, clear batrider and general improvement of shmup skills...

The second definitely happened. I've had my best year yet as far as playing goes. I've only started to really document my clears as of last year, I added a few over the year. It started out pretty disappointing, while everyone seemed to be posting they're awesome clears of Garegga/Ibara/ketsui... Mine started with redux dark matters :? Then fire mustang...then...
Donpachi
Dodonpachi
Mushihimesama futari 1.5
Bullet soul ib
Ketsui x
Batrider
Ketsui arcade
Mmp arrange

I also made significant improvements on doj and mmp arcade (which I'm working on now, nearly did it a couple of times)

I didn't set out to clear any of these it was just the way it went. So, can't complain! Although I won't set such specific goals next year. Just play what I enjoy and concentrate on the games I have got before looking to buy more!...

• 25 Million in Batrider (30M is WR)
• Beating Prometheus' Guwange score (50 Mil) ... Catspider hype lives on!
• Get better at Battle Garegga, already falling in love with it.
• 1cc Dragon Saber (lasting goal from 2013)
• Get around to trying some STG I haven't tried: Star Soldier series, Zanac Neo, Soukigryenhentai, some others.
• 3000 subs for STG Weekly!
It seems all of my goals were too lofty and I didn't challenge them very specifically, but I did get better at Garegga. But I never met my goal of D+ in Garegga which saddens me a little. I only played Guwange so I could stay fresh-ish on it, never improved my score. I tried some new STG but not many, I think...

The theme of my STG career seems to be only going half above and beyond, then struggling to break through. It's my biggest weakness as a player on rare exceptions (raiden iv).

Some of these goals will carry on into the new year.

I shall try to make the new thread soon!

In your defense Aquas, you did get the WR time for Ghouls n' Ghosts speedrun, which is a pretty amazing accomplishment, even if it's not shmup related.

I also hope to meet yet more players across the globe when work takes me travelling, maybe meet a forum member or two from overseas if they are visiting London, and maybe get involved in a retro gaming event in the UK. Also, getting the UK’s northern shmuppers down (smraedis, Lordstar etc.) would be great (I was rubbish when they came down in 2013). I might even track down mr_m0nks (we know you're out there mate!). Possibly get overseas to Stunfest or something.
Well, that was harder than I thought, especially as I moved out of London this year. Still, while JDE deserves more credit for making it happen than I, we did meet a good few times, went to France for Stunfest, and I met some new players and got a couple of them to join us for a meet at my house. More of the same for 2015, I hope!
spadgy wrote:Oh yeah, and get more 1CCs!
I managed eight 1CC's this year. Some certainly in the less than impressive territory. I'd like to get many more for 2015. Or at least some that I can puff my chest up about a bit.

- Clear Futari God Mode.
Not quite, but it's definitely still my #1 target. I'm pushing into stage 5, and it should happen naturally as I continue to invest more time. It'd surely be easier if I just did a pure survival run, but I can never bring myself to ignore score.
- Play more regularly.
I've decided to just stop worrying about this. I want to put a lot of time into STGs in 2015 as well, but I have the most fun with occasional deep binges as the mood strikes me, rather than some sort of regimented practice schedule.
- Decide on a secondary game to focus on.
Seems like it's going to be Ketsui for now, as it's been a ton of fun. A 1-ALL should definitely be attainable with a little bit of effort, but I've made myself put that on hold until I finish what I've started with Futari. I still want to find a non-Cave game to put some time into as well, but that likewise is second-priority. (I really like some things about Raizing, but man, the sheer amount of stuff that there is to learn in those games just feels overwhelming to me at first.)
- Try to become able to talk about my personal progress and achievements without having to preface it with "I know I'm awful compared to most of you, but..." every time.
Done. Over the past year, I've learned that the downside of getting better is that it makes you less satisfied with your past accomplishments, so it's only natural for even great players to downplay whatever impossible-sounding thing it is that they've done. All that really matters is not to be a dick about it, but that goes beyond just this.

and last but certainly not least - actually playing more.
A couple thou from an E, so missed out on that one, even if it's real close.

Did not 1CC Batrider Advanced. Got an OK score though.

Did not 1CC Futari God. Got the 2,5 bil though. 1CC is close.

Ketsui: Yup, got a bit farther. Gonna shoot for even further and at least a 200 mil score.

Playing more... hmm... yes, i did play more during 2014 than 2013 but still not that much at all. Probably averaged an hour or two a week over the year.

Overall pretty disappointing. Will have to get my shit together now.

Best shooting moment of the year was of course meeting up with fantastic and awesome people at Stunfest.
10/10 would go again.

I didn’t really bother with either of my clear attempts (SDOJ and Gigawing), instead focussed on more yagawa stuff and a few random extra games along the way. Seems it was a big year for me shmup wise!

* 1CC Battle Garegga (thanks to Alamone’s live stream from his meet where I watched BER 1CCed with Golden Bat)
* The next day I got A.8 score and Gain
* Early in Feb I finally got the Ibara A.9 1CC, after having cleared the game over a dozen times in 2013 shy of the letter
* 1-All DP
* 1CC Darius Gaiden
* 1CC Neo XYX
* 1CC Fever SOS (hard game!)
* Reached 2-4 in DDP for first time
* Reached 2-4 in Cyvern for the first time
* 1CC Batrider Advance Course
* Batrdier A.8 gameover on discharge

What is with all these Yagawa scores just shy of “B”!!! ARGH

Non gameplay related:

* Bought and fixed my 4th candy cab  SNK Super Neo 29
* Hosted a shmeet and met some awesome players who all had a great time
* QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES (going on 8 months now).

Eaglet wrote:Did not 1CC Batrider Advanced. Got an OK score though.
Protip from Kaiser, if you want a dirty shitclear, use Shorty-C and don’t metal, and if you really want skip the full bombs for a few extra special extends. You’ll likely clear advanced in 1 sitting with this method.

Spent most of 2014 doing not-shmup related stuff and so didn't really accomplish anything of note.

On the Cave side, played mostly DDP, Ketsui and DOJBL but my scores for those didn't improve by much and are still very low. I had aimed for 200m DDP but could only get 160-something out of it. Laughable but no effort went into it really so I can't complain.
Touhou-side, been playing mostly survival runs with no bombs but all of them had deaths in them so they were quite rubbish too.

I did however succeed at having a blast at playing so that's what matters. :)

Goals for 2015 is to play more. I have been a terrible lazy bum in 2014 and I regret not spending my time with more shooty gaming.
I'm playing Touhou Fairy Wars with a bit of coaching from my friend and a 3rd place in B-1 Lunatic on the leaderboards look within reach when I've learned the routes.

I didn't post any goals in this thread, but looking back, I don't think I played anything but Dodonpachi Daioujou and Crimzon Clover. Pretty lazy year for me as far as shumps are concerned, hopefully I'll be more motivated in 2015.

Just a heads up, before perhaps switching out the logicboard, which will not solve the problem if its a laptop:
If your mac is a laptop, most likely the gpu needs a reball, not a logic board replacement from Apple.
After extensive research on the subject (17 inch macbook pro here), most if not all logic board's gpu from this series, etc.., will fail.
Best reball service: http://www.ps3specialist.com/
The fact is these machines get way too hot due to limited ventilation from the backside and will need to be reballed/resoldered at some point. Failing point is usually 2-3 yrs.
The logic boards Apple is providing right now are for the most part all refurbished/parted=not new, since stock has run out, and supposedly and will fail much sooner, sometimes months after logicboard replacement.
After getting my GPU reballed, I have had 0 issues. But I do keep my rear of laptop on stilts/propped up, which gets rid of most of the heat which ultimately kills these GPUs/cracks the cheaper lead free solder which can not take such extreme temps over time.

Nope. I did get to a point where I could do 1-4 a bit more reliably, but 1-5 is really frantic and hard to do for me.

The only thing I have in mind for 2015 right now is getting the Imperishable Night normal 1cc. Settling my debts with Batsugun and Dodonpachi seems like solid goals too, but I have little patience for both of those at the moment, who knows.

Personal Favourite Achievements of 2014:
Broke my personal best at DOJBL, made it to Hibachi. Then I went and finished developing that one game.
As for not-shmups, I also managed to finally get 15-runer Mummy Fighter in Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup.

Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2014:
Made that one game.

Favourite Achievements by Others of 2014:
Kamui's BG Gain WR, Jaimer's various clears, Muchi-Muchi Pork Manpuku 2-ALL...

Goals for 2014:

I honestly didn't do that much shmupping in 2014, save for the occasional pick up and play session. I did, however, win a shmups game contest during the month of December on another forum. Each week there was a retro shmup and a modern shmup, and since I own 6 of the 8 games, I participated in all I had. I got high scores in 5 of the 6, and won 1st place, which I felt pretty good about. That has given me a somewhat renewed love for the genre, so some of the games in the contest I plan to go back to soon. I was particularly proud of my RayCrisis showing, having scored over 800K with WR-03, and only having used 8 continues (9 total "plays) to accomplish it, which is good for me. I ended up being able to face "infinity" and got the "good" ending. I also felt quite good about my showing with Xyanide, and Gradius on the NES.
