Good headphones that goes over ears?
So im in the market for some decent headphones that wraps my ears instead of the traditional over the head dj headphones. My reason, i got a new hairtyle that requires pomade & traditional headphones ruin my hair lol. Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Long corded ear bud styles would be great to mention as well, thanks!. Budget $50-$150.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
I just wanted to mention that when I've got my hair cut short, it does tend to get flattened by the supporting "wings" of the Audio Technica headphones (like the ATH-A900 and A900X). I like the design, but some people hate it, and it definitely works by pushing gently against the top of your head.
In my view I'd rather deal with a bit of inverse horns than have headphones pushing solely against my ears, but I also tend to wear heavier headphones.
If I had to guess, the most comfortable option for you will be a lighter pair. I hope there's something that's suitable but also has high quality sound.

I've got AKG K701. Give them a good amplifier and they sound incredible.

I'd also look into Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic, whatever model fits your budget. Personally I'm a closed earphone type of headphone listener, which from what it sounds like is what you're looking for too? Both are really good brands, especially if you go into their professional series of headphones.

I like BeyerDynamics myself - I have had both DT-990 and 770 Pro, and they are very nice.
The 990s are open back so you might not want them for 'public' usage.

No love for Sony, Denon, or Audio-Technica?
If we're going to talk about open back designs we might as well mention Grado too.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
There are lots of differing qualities in headphones that you don't mention.
Is bass a concern? I mean do you like heavy thumping bass in your ear holes?
Do you prefer closed headphones or open back? Open back leak sound so people other than you can hear.
What is powering the headphones?
Most people will go for a Bose solution. But just to go against the grain I bought some Grados instead. They do leak sound as they are open back, not too punchy on the bass and work better with higher amplification. They also come with the 6.35mm jack (the bigger size as standard) and requires an adapter for 3.5mm. The cable is quite short, so unless your device on your person or very close by you will need an extension lead.
I got the SR125.

Just to clarify, wasn't the OP asking for behind-the-neck style earphones?

Yeah, I read it wrong. I just read the part that said "over the ear"

Yea, traditional over the head aint for me. i can put it sideway but then my neck gets strained lol. Im not looking for super high bass or anything. Just anything with clarity & reliable.

Grado do a neckband set based on the SR60. Doesn't look fancy but sounds great and I find them very comfortable.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
Is the problem that the band goes over the center of your skull? There are traditional over the ear headphones where the band goes around the back of the top of the head, if that makes sense.
Perhaps ear-buds would suit your needs best? The thin plastic tube that go along the top of the earlobe and directing behind don't seem that appealing it may even muck up your hair at the back.
Here is the best solution:
Go to a high end audio equipment store and try on what they've got. The upscale places have intelligent staff who could help you better than us.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
My only word of warning with Grado headphones is most (if not all) of them are open air headphones. So you might want to use them only for home/studio.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
Being a closed back guy I'd recommend another haircut...
But seriously akg 451 are nice small headphones you can wear round neck or back of head... Intrigued by the grado's neckband, not tried any forever myself, but never bet against them from putting out a good produc... Though that might depend if open back is in/out of criteria.

I use these at work for the exact reason you mentioned in the original post:
http://www.safeandsoundhq.com/Polk-Audi ... fgodrxIAnw
They definitely aren't high end audiophile headphones, but when I need that quality at home, I have my Audio-Technica circumauruls. They're cheap, and the sound on them isn't bad at all, but most importantly they are very comfortable and don't make my hair look ridiculous throughout the work day.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
If you're looking for a on-ear headphones (as opposed to over-ear, which are bigger than your ears and the pads go around them) here are two cheap but good recommendations:
* Koss Porta Pro. These are low-budget headphones with a classic design that are hard to beat as a package. Compared to more expensive headphones they don't sound as clear, but they have a warm, generally likeable sound with a bit of bass and rolled off highs. They're incredible lightweight, can be folded into a ball-shape and not expensive to replace should they break. Not all people like the 80s styling however. One thing to keep in mind is that these are open back headphones, which means they leak more sound. Both in and out. I personally don't find them to leak too much sound during regular listening volume but they won't block any noise from the outside. I find this to be a bit of a good thing because I retain situational awareness outside and don't walk into traffic, but other people love blocking out all noise so...
The reason I always tend to return to these is that they sound good enough to bring with me and are easy enough to put in a pocket or bag when I don't need them.
* Creative Aurvana Live! - Normally, I don't tend to associate the Creative brand with hi-fi products (although they really have made some interesting moves in this area lately) but this headphone is really quite good. It costs about the double of the Koss Porta Pro, but it's technically a better headphone.
This headphone is actually not made not Creative, but by Fostex and it shares it's driver with a popular Denon budget headphone. The looks are a bit hit or miss with their glossy finnish, and they're not foldable.
Comfort is okay, it's actually sold as an over-ear headphone, but the pads are so small they kinda sit on your ears like an on-ear anyway. Very lightweight headphone, and they're closed but don't isolate so much.
The sound is very clear with a deep bass, and very present mids and highs. The soundstage is pretty impressive and it has a way of dividing up the sound and placing it in different "areas" (far right, right, middle, left, far left) etc so that's really fun with songs that are mixed properly. Again, the bass is quite deep without any EQ.
I personally find the highs to get a bit distracing with this headphone, as in high-hats are maybe a bit too forward sounding, and sometimes the sound can feel a bit "thin". Like, it's sharp but some more "body" would be nice. Still, it's a good headphone for the money.
There's a version 2 of it, but it costs more so I haven't tried it.
Edit: If you want a headphone without a headband, Koss Ksc75 is a popular budget alternative. Some say the they like the sound of these better than the Porta Pros.

Re: Good headphones that goes over ears?
Thanks, looks like the koss porta pro is not behind the ear/head head phones though but the Koss Sporta Pro is after like a quick 10 minute research. Might just cop the Sporta pro one for 23$.
