I highly recommend checking out the PCE Salamander, it is much more polished and fun than the original arcade game. It does have the Gradius checkpoint system in place, but it actually works like a charm. The hit detection is accurate, your shield isn't useless, you get extends, the checkpoints are perfectly manageable even on higher loops (on Beginner as well as Expert difficulty), the pricky fourth boss doesn't require you to do pixel-perfect positioning, higher loops do change the level layout, but don't throw those awful death traps at you etc. It's great!

I don't know why but I often try to beat these games on the highest difficulty (disregarding loops). I even went so far as to restart Salamander from scratch every time just so the stage 4 boss would actually fight back (weird behavior or doesn't attack if you have beaten it in the past without a reset of the game, very weird). I really hate games with excessive slowdown, so I always try to turn it off if possible (for instance, it pretty much ruined Gradius III on the SNES).

The only Darius game I've played for more than 2 minutes was Darius Twin (1CC'd it like 2 or 3 years ago), which I enjoyed and would play again. I might do a playthrough for that one again just to have a record of it or maybe playthrough a different path (any idea which path is the hardest?). There are so many damn games I want to play lol, it's hard to figure out what to do next.

I do actually own the PC Engine Gradius games and Salamander but my Salamander HuCard does not work anymore! I don't know why it won't work but every other game I've tried works fine on my TG-16 (with hucard concerter) except for that one. I guess I need to rebuy it, ughh.

If you play a Darius, maybe don't make it Twin. It's one of the worst in the series, and it's pretty broken so every path is quite easy. If you want challenge try some of the harder paths in Darius II or Darius Gaiden.

I actually really enjoyed Darius Twin for what it was, even if it's watered down

Which versions/ports are the best? I don't really like MAME so I'd rather play one of the console versions. I have Taito Legends 1 & 2 which have some of the games. I also have Super Nona (not sure what this correlates to) and Sagaia (the genesis one, Darius II?) I also have Darius Plus on the PC Engine.

I don't have the Legends ports so I can't vouch for them, but Gaiden on Saturn is excellent. The PS1 port is not so good (lotsa slowdown, so especially bad for you). Darius II on the other hand should be avoided on Saturn due to a serious glitch that ruins quite a few of the stages in the game. It looks arcade perfect but it's not. One of the Japanese Taito collections has Darius II on it, and while I haven't played it I'd bet on that one over the SAT version.

Super Nova is it's own unique game, not bad, I'd take it over Twin. The genesis Darius II is also it's own thing; it's a very different game from arcade and also quite easy. Plus is a watered down but still decently good port of the original arcade game. The original arcade version is actually my favorite in the series, but as a Gradius player I think you'd have an easier time jumping into Gaiden or II, and for the original you really would need MAME or access to a cab unfortunately.

Whoo! Just cleared Samidare! Kind of out of nowhere
Spoiler
Image
In all fairness the game does give you 5 lives to start with, but at least it has no extends. Comparing Mars Matrix, for example, there are 3 lives by default, but the two extends in the game are both trivial to actually get. Then again Mars Matrix is around 18 minutes long, wheras Samidare is more like 11.

Video coming soon...

Darius Burst psp arcade mode clear with the next ship, 37mil score. I did go through the easiest route, will probably work through on harder modes.

Looking at the achievements posted in this thread, it doesn't really seem like it belongs here: Serei Senshi Spriggan and Cotton 100%, both on normal (and the latter on first try, which says a lot if even I can get a first time clear).
Since I finally got a spare TV to tate, I hope to be able to play some more serious STGs in the near future. Though I'm not too optimistic about 1CCing them. :|

Thanks bro!

Tell me about it, dying stupidly on stage 1 and 2 are even worse. After a while stage 3 becomes really easy and stage 4 I usually mess up somewhere and have two ships going into stage 5. That's after getting 2 extends and the trick 1up on stage 3. So definitely room for improvement, but I might jump into Maniac now and give Original a reprieve.

Good luck with Maniac then. :D I think I'll switch over to Espgaluda after Mushi Original. Well that's if I really get to clear it. Still feels so annoyingly inconsistant. Just went into training mode to practice stage 4 after failing miserably when reaching it in arcade mode… and no missed it on my third training run with two bombs. Even got to the last boss on that try. Only to utterly fail again in arcade mode afterwards on several tries.
Oh and yeah, Stage 2 boss gets me on nearly every second try, that's how "good" I am.

Hey again everyone, hope Christmas went well for you all, and the holidays are going well! ^^

So yeah, I've decided, some time ago after I did my MoF lunatic 1cc, that I'll go out for a walk outside of Gensokyo for a bit, and go get some fresh air before heading back (I was working at IN lunatic before I decided to take a little break from Touhou). That being said, for the last few days, I've been working on Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 Original mode, and sure enough, as of last night, I got the 1cc in it :):

Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 Original mode 1cc using Reco/Normal

Edit: Whoops, I forgot to update the link on this, since I deleted the old video. Alright, the above link should link to the new video I made.

1.5 - Xbox 360 - Original - Reco/Normal
PTG - 225,964,526 - ALL (Lx 2, Bx 0)

Yeah, this didn't take too long for me to get, since I put in only a few days for this 1cc. I used Reco/Normal for this 1cc, since I like using her wide shot a lot, as it wipes the screen of enemies. Unfortunately, however, my score isn't high enough to get into the top 20 of the Hi-score thread here at shmups forum for this particular game, so yeah. I may improve on this run to try to get 300+ million someday, or go do the same thing, using Palm Abnormal. Also, yes, I did record this replay of mine's using a phone, lol. I have no capture card, like Elgato or something like that, so yeah. Yeah, I know I said I was going to do DoDonPachi, but I suddenly decided I wanted to do Mushihimesama Futari first before DoDonPachi, so yeah... I'll go put serious work on DoDonPachi, sooner or later, at any rate! :)

Hmm, that DrTrouserPlank guy says this game is impossible, or something like that, I recall. Well, the game didn't seem too impossible for me, when I played it so far. Anyways...

I guess I'll go do Futari Black Label Original mode next, which shouldn't take long at all, so I should be working on BL Maniac very soon after BL Original! ^^

Got the Batrider Advanced letter score! I’m very proud of this one.

Image

my scoreboard for this sitting is hilarious, honestly I game over on stage 2 maybe 75% of the time either screwing up Boredom or Bashi mk1.
Image

Would have been nice to get past that part of discharge and then collect the 10.5 mil extend which I didn’t get to see. Also got NO full bombs in the final stage which really hurt.
