My personal takes on a few games, off the top of my head...
Mushihime-sama: Good, but not great, port. Has "the essentials," but few trimmings...it's a bit too similar to the DonPachis to be a stand-alone favorite of mine (since its main scoring gimmick is basically a direct chaining variation), but the art style is my favorite of any Cave game I've played.
Giga Wing Generations: Lots of good stuff happening gameplay-wise (most visible bullets in the series, good balance between shooting and reflecting, good pace), crippled to some extent by a bad port: most notably, no proper tate mode and a sluggish framerate, which takes some of the precision out of the gameplay, at least for me. IIRC, however, there's a "greatest hits" type re-release on the way, and I wouldn't consider it a bad buy at that price.
Psyvariar 2: More extras than the other versions, and a roll button to make things a bit easier, but 1) It's on a noisy blue disc, and 2) Load times are a bit longer than on the DC, though it's nothing death-dealing.
Double Shienryu: Good port of the original Shienryu (though unfortunately it's missing a high-score save
), along with "Double Shienryu": rather short, but has some decent score-based gameplay. Plus, it's cheap.
Psyvariar Complete: 2 games in 1, a bit more "basic" than Psy 2, but not necessarily a bad thing; or, you can buy the 2 games separetely as budget titles if you can't find the Complete version cheap. Slightly bare-bones, and the graphics are lousy, but still fun, imo.
Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse: Plays almost exactly like the first TSS, but that's not a bad thing (and it's probably a bit cheaper than the Saturn or DC ports). Also has online play, but only for Japan, unfortunately. Original game is unlockable, but plagued by slowdown.
Shikigami no Shiro 2: A nice character selection, each with varying abilities, and better gameplay balance (notable) and graphics (not as notable) than the first (also available on PS2). Very score-based, very "complete" package. Both the first and second Shiki games have gotten budget re-releases.
I'll let others tackle the games I neglected to mention, or append the ones I did.

Mobile Light Force 2
XS Games removed all tate options and story bits from Shikigami No Shiro 1, slapped on one of the worst pieces of box art ever created, and sold it. It's actually pretty playable, but then again...it's the only version of Shiki 1 I've ever played, so ask someone else to see how pure it is gameplay-wise. Oh, and they replaced the Japanese in-game voices with some really badly screamed English..."SUCH POWER!"...>groans<...You can buy it anywhere for five dollars, though.
Castle Shikigami 2
XS was nice enough to leave the story and vertical display options in this one...at the cost of possibly the worst voice acting ever. The cutscenes feature great lines such as, "BEATING YOU DOWN!" and "A gentleman's come"...all in-game vocals are from the Japanese version, I believe.
Anyways, Shiki 2 is a pretty good game. It's 500 times more refined than the first Shiki, and bullet scraping is fun. Each character plays drastically different, you really can't attack each level the same way with them as they all require different strategies...
R-Type Final
I'm still not sure if I love or merely like this game. The first level is pure boredom, the third level is pure slowdown...Tons of different craft to play with and that creepy R-Type setting and feel.
Gradius V
Although the lack of level variety (90% of the game looks like a run-down industrial complex or space station, with only levels 4 and 5 standing out of the pack...no ice/flame/desert/Moai stages here) sort of hurts, GV is a solid game.
Silpheed: The Lost Planet
I can't stand this game. The stages last forever, the cockpit chatter is annoying (and you can't shut it off), and I totally hate the sort-of-isometric view this game features. And it's not very exciting, either.

One more reason you should get the Japanese version. The Japanese version of SnS2 is one of the very fews PS2 shmups that support progressive scan.crithit5000 wrote:Castle Shikigami 2
