360 red rings, but works just fine?

Post by quash »

I posted about this on another forum and received the response typical of other forums. So, I now come to you.

My 360 is a Jasper, which I opened up to repair the disc drive as well as install a GPU heatsink. I figured that I may as well clean up the CPU and reapply thermal compound while I was at it.

Since then, my 360 has shown three red lights (General Hardware Failure), but it works just fine with every game I've tested. If it weren't for the red lights, I'd have no idea that anything was wrong.

Google told me it was probably the power brick. I have three of them, and they all show green lights when the 360's powered on, so I doubt that's it.

The console currently doesn't have a case either, though I don't believe the 360 has a switch/sensor to detect that.

The one thing I am concerned about is some slight damage I caused to the underside of the motherboard when I was removing the CPU X-clamp (pictures here and here) . It seems to me like all I did was scrape off protective shielding from the leads, though there is exposed copper on the part of the PCB closest to the hole used for the X-clamp. Perhaps that's causing some undesired conductivity? Or maybe the lack of shielding on parts of the leads is causing interference? That's the best I can come up with.
