Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Anyone have any experience with the SONY BVM-D24E1 for 240p stuff? How is it compared to the BVM-20F1U?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
pretty much identical.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I wouldn't expect it so. The D models are multisync and SONY multisync CRT's have more pronounced space between each scan line for 240p.
Whether that is for better or worse depends on personal preference. I do not care for it.

A very little more pronounced space. FOR ME is worse the D24 playing near the screen (like a cab distance), but i prefer it to a normal distance.kamiboy wrote:I wouldn't expect it so. The D models are multisync and SONY multisync CRT's have more pronounced space between each scan line for 240p.

The D24 have the advantage can play 480p/720p titles from X360, wii,... and IMHO is the best monitor all around for this.
In few days i am going to take two sony FW900 to play with them. May be can be a good alternative to the D24
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Does the BVM-D24E1 suffer from any strange sync issues the 20D1FU doesn't? Like curling at the top with arcade games, or not liking a particular sync signal from the console? I'm getting a second RGB monitor and wanna make sure I don't spend $500 or so on something that won't work with everything I got.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
The BVM-D does have a nice AFC function which you can use to cure those "curly tops". Compatibility is the same as with the non-D model. Just the A models don't like off-spec refresh rates.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Thanks for the replies!
Final question is, does the 24" Widescreen televisions suffer from geometry issues? It's my understanding that flat screen CRT's will never really have perfect geometry. At least the BVM-D24E1 looks like it is a flat screen tube, I've never actually seen one.

yes, the D24 is flat. It uses the same tube as the FW900. No geometry or convergence issues though.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
someone has a NEC VM5 (16/9 but 480p native) for retrogaming?
alternative to the pioneer V402?
better tecno in a 16/9 enclosure?

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
If you don't mind the 16:9 aspect ratio, then (for 480p use) there are a lot of good plasma screens, many even better than the V402 due to better blacks. At some point though the manufacturers started to include "better" processing algorithms for 15khz material and this is when the sets got considerably worse for 240p material (or 480i gaming).
I don't know the VM5. I have no doubt that it's extremely nice for 480p content, but I cannot tell you wether it's suited for 240p as the V402 or not. Panasonic had great 480p sets as well in their professional line.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Thanks a lot fudoh, the monitor has been sold now.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Well, I just bought a BVM D20F1U with 4,416 hours on it. Hopefully it gets here in working condition. Really hoping it will 'just work' with all my stuff so I can have a reliable 2nd RGB monitor. Thanks for all the replies and help.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Very cool! Be sure to post some photos once you get it!

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Very true. I'm in the UK & am also looking for an NEC XM/XP/XV monitor in good working order. I can organise (and will pay for) shipping from anywhere in Europe.
I will pay a LOT for a good one (several hundreds). Seems crazy I know but as you say these are very hard to find these days...
Cheers

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Perhaps someone could help me with my issue here.
I got a BKM-21D expansion card for my Sony BVM-D20F1U monitor so I can use standard composite inputs on it if needed. I plugged in the board, plugged in my Nintendo 64 and at first had nothing. After messing with some settings I got the picture, but it has no color and just keeps scrolling around on the screen. Is there an obvious setting I don't have right somewhere?
This is an NTSC N64 going in via standard composite cable via RCA-BNC adapter into analog slot 6 of the card and with a 75ohm terminator on the output.
EDIT: Nevermind, got it working now.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Just received my BVM 20DF1U. Still trying to get the hang of setting it up. Where is the AFC feature you mentioned Fudoh?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
It';s not liking my TMNT or sunset riders board:

CPS1 and CPS2 sync fine. Any ideas what the issue is? I have it set to RGB and external sync.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Ya, I'm not seeing any sort of AFC function or setting anywhere, I think you're confused with your RGB3 tutorial settings? Still not sure how to fix this sync issue with arcade boards yet, been playing with some values and reading the operation manual and nothing describes sync other than the vertical and horizontal sync buttons. Anyone else run a lot of jamma stuff off their 20D1FU and get this issue? Starting to wonder if it's my supergun.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Certainly not, since I talked to a "D" user and the problem wasn't videogame related. It showed curling from a (iirc) VHS or LD source and he was able to fix it using a specific setting. I'll try to get ahold of that info. The option maybe just didn't say AFC, but it should be there.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Ok would appreciate that, thanks.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Its either called AFC or VCR mode. I think its under advanced settings. I've had a similar tearing affect happen with my RGB modded PC Duo. Yours looks a little more pronounced though.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I can't seem to enable the VCR mode while it's in RGB, it's not selectable and in purple =/.
EDIT: N/M found the other setting for it.
I have the picture working at putting a 220 resistor in line with the sync signal, but when I press menu I don't get a menu when running arcade boards. If I enable pulse cross and press menu I see it then, but it's distorted and its moving around. So it's accessing the menu but not showing it.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Anyone got the service manual for a 20DF1U bvm? Not the operation manual, I was able to find that.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Hi, Guys
I just picked my BVM D20F1J Monitor recently. I found very strong interference moire on the screen when I turn it on.
Something like electromagnetic waves, hard to describe...
Could someone share their experience and help to sort it out ?
Many Thanks

Sounds like bad news. Shadow mask related, but I am no expert.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
could someone who use Bvm-D20F1J tell how to enter the extend menu ? Need Password
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
It's 1111 by default. Same with the maintenance menu.
