That was cool to read. My oldest son is only 2 and a half so he's not that into games yet but he does like goofing around in RC-pro am as much as the newer mario karts so I guess there's hope :)

My first console was an Atari 7800, which could sometimes be disappointing compared to the NESes other kids had, but I'm glad it got me started with video games at almost the ground floor. Good ports of golden age arcade titles, and backwards compatibility with the 2600, where console gaming first exploded.

By the time he had turned seven, Eliot had collected every star in Super Mario 64.
What?!

I'm still reading it, but I think this guy raised either a gaming genius or a monster. "his powers are growing faster than we imagined"

Hehe awesome I've been collecting 15kHz consoles and CRTs to make sure my *almost* 4yo grows up with the same appreciation - GroovyMAME in chronological order with 8 and 16 bit consoles and home computers.

We didn't really have money for old consoles, so we just saved up and bought the best PC available (which lasted 10 years!). As soon as the PC was bought, I was offered a choice between starting with NES, Megadrive, Amiga etc. emulation (I picked megadrive first). Every week I'd also put aside two hours to look into the -really- old games and consoles/computers. My first proper shmup was Arrow Flash (computer had chicken invaders 1 pre-installed).

I only started playing PC games once I considered myself experienced enough with the emulated ones, aka after about six years.

If I ever had kids I wouldn't force them to play old games. I would show them old games and if they wanted to play them they could. If they choose to play new games they could. I would follow the age ratings exactly, if they understand the rules early on there will be no arguments. If a game has 13+ on the box they can play it on their 13th birthday. As soon as the rules are broken even once I would be in for a headache. My child should learn to kill prostitutes when they are 17 just like everyone else.

Now that there is a working template, I've summarized and included the method used into the Become Proficient in Gaming Playing the Fewest Titles guide of ultimate questionable parenting. http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=45331

And if you look on your left, you'll see the only person on the planet who cares about age ratings! Take your pictures now, this is a once in a lifetime experience.

No Master System, Genesis, Saturn or Dreamcast?

Why does that man hate his son so much?

Since his kid has developed an interest in older retro styled games, those consoles can still be introduced.

Think of how awesome it will be for him when he realizes there's more libraries.
