Skyshark pcb graphics problem

Post by parts »

Just received an ebay skyshark board and the enemy tanks and some large planes have weird vertical lines through them. This is the first board I've had problems with and it looks like an authentic Romstar version. Anyone know a way to troubleshoot the sprite graphics or a rom swap maybe? The game play is more satanic than Raiden.

Try reseating the 4 roms which are in a row on their own. If the lines affect certain specific sprites rather than 'all sorts of things' then it's probably a fault there. Unfortunately those mask roms can and do fail.

Tried reseating roms 01-04, no fix. So if I could find those 4 roms and replace them that might solve the graphics bug? Guess I could just save up for the next fire shark pcb that comes up and live with the eye melting sky shark graphics.

To be honest you should probably just buy another one and sell that as faulty - to go any further you need rom reader, logic probe etc. A broken game nobody has tried to repair yet is more desirable than a broken game with repair attempts, at least.

^ this. Plus that board sells for fairly cheap. I sold one not too long ago for $60 if I remember correctly.

Just gonna bump this up since its semi-related, but I got my own Sky Shark board today and it worked great......for the first two times I used it. However, I noticed at one point the game seemed to randomly freeze. I turned off and turned my cabinet back on and it seemed fine. The second time that happened though, it just got stuck and what looks to be the very first flash of tiles on bootup, which now happens every time:

In reading around online, the general freezing problem (what I got the first time) appears to be related to the board not quite getting enough voltage, so I made some slight increase on my PSU, going incrementally from 5v to about 5.25v with no change in the screen above, which then leads me to believe something else went haywire. One troubleshooting thread I found had this same issue, but seemed to never report back with any solution.

Just curious if there's any ideas or if I should just cut my losses and go the same route as OP was recommended myself
