the reason why these games suck is down to a very simple and canonical aspect: anything on touch controls sucks
for everything else opt2not has the subject covered already

I think it's clear by this point that some people like touch controls.

By the way, on a parallel note, the reason horizontal shoot-em-ups suck boils down to the simple fact that anything horizontal sucks.

I'll actually play devil's advocate here. Kinda. I'm no R-Type expert so everything comes with a grain of salt. R-Type was the Amazon FAOTD a month or so back so I picked it up. Compared to R-Types on the PS1 everything seemed faster and the game appeared to be either based on a slightly harder romset or a set with slightly amped difficulty.

Unfortunately, the major problem boils down to the controls, but not in the way it would seem. Touchscreen is, sadly, the only way to go since the on-screen button option, even when expanded, never allowed me a neutral position for my thumb. I can only imagine the fun of someone trying to play on a device smaller than my Kindle Fire. If they had used a virtual d-pad based on the relative position of the input with a bit of deadzone things would be much better. If my thumb was resting on the screen, the ship was moving. Buttons for shot/Force are awkward but...workable. Of course, touchscreen controls allow unlimited speed and both options block a portion of the screen. Trying to dodge fire with unlimited speed is actually incredibly hard.

For what it is, it's fine. I don't expect to be working out pixel-perfect patterns on a tablet. It would probably be better with an external controller, but the speed issue is still a problem.

I'm really not interested in yet another Rtype cash in. Playing R-type with anything other than an 8 way joystick / joypad would be just pointless.

Auto fire enabled shmups? - nah, I remember the days standing in the Big Apple in Glasgow, hammering away at the fire button, learning the game, playing it the way it was meant to be played.

I'll remember it that way, thanks.

I took a look at your posting history, and literally all you've posted (aside from some recommended noob shmups and a trip to arcade odyssey) are promotions and praise for iOS shooters.

I'm growing very suspicious.

Don't worry. I won't be posting anything iOS related going forward. I never expected the hatred and paranoia towards touch screen gaming as I've experienced here. Haters are gonna hate and you guys are haters to the extreme. :|

No one is paranoid.
You can enjoy your iOS games to the fullest, it's just that no one here will be willing to share your enthusiasm. Don't force it.

I'm not really sure it's entirely anti-touchscreen here*, just that DotEmu have burned a lot of bridges with the community, and there's no real sign yet that they care. I held off passing the evidence of MAME use along to GOG.com because I didn't feel it was worth all the fuss, and I'm not an asshole, but some days I do wonder if that was the right choice.

*although in my personal opinion phones and touchscreens make shit gaming devices

Regardless of Mitchell's dubious character, being a "god" of simplistic Golden Age arcade games that infinitely loop until they run out of memory is more a matter of persistence and endurance than skill. There's very little prestige in being a master of running marathons that require no physical exertion.

Funnily enough, you yourself linked to a video that labels him a douchebag.

Defeat in what? This all boils down to a matter of opinion. I like the Raiden and R-Type ports on iOS. I also like the ports of Tengai and Strikers 1945 part II.

How are the Taito ports of Rayforce, Raystorm and Dariusburst SP on iOS? Anyone here have any thoughts or opinions on those ports?
Darius Burst plays fairly well for this sort of thing. I think I was able to beat the easiest path on my telephone. It's obviously better on PSP, or especially Arcade, but it's not bad for what it is.

He holds the world record for PacMan...the perfect PacMan game. That's a very impressive accomplishment. To the best of my knowledge...there isn't anyone else who's done that. It takes a lot more than persistence to do that. Even the creator of PacMan acknowledged that Billy Mitchell knows more about the game than he does. I don't see your name "Pretas" attached to a perfect game in anything nonetheless an original PacMan arcade machine done with one quarter never making a mistake.

Stop trying to diminish and make light of Billy Mitchell's accomplishments. The guy is a winner plain and simple.

Na he was only the first to do it. Mitchell himself has said that once you get past a certain point it's mainly boring and repetitive.
Also, don't know if he's a douchebag but it's pretty safe to say he's a giant goofball...

I'm not a fan of Mitchell, but I highly disagree that persistence is all that is required to be good at Golden Age games, especially Donkey Kong, which requires a great deal of skill and practice to even pass a few levels.

I've seen a few streams(from AndrewG) of Donkey Kong scoring a while back. It is definitely a lot of skill to milk as much points as they can and also to survive all the RNG involved. Also the timing needed to actually survive the end of some of the later stages seems kind of strict(but I don't play the game, so I could be wrong about that). There's a lot of skill in getting the high score or even reaching the killscreen.

the Pacman series games IIRC is pure memorization if you want a good score and executing the route without mistakes.

Neither of those are something I'd dismiss as unimpressive, even if I'm not really interested in the games myself.

Since we've gone completely off topic here, isn't one of the Pacman ghosts completely random? Doesn't that throw off the patterns?

No, all of the ghosts have completely predictable behavior. The blue ghost appears to be random, but he actually uses a convoluted formula based on both the position of Blinky (the red ghost) and Pacman to determine his destination.
