NES/Famicom/FDS Shmup Guide

Post by nesmaster14 »

Hey everyone, I thought I'd give a heads up on a little guide I made. It's still being worked on as far as visuals/functionality is concerned, but all the essential content is there. As a big SHMUP fan I wanted to try and make a thorough guide that covered the whole spectrum of NES, Famicom, and Famicom Disk System shoot 'em ups. It includes licensed and unlicensed stuff, even some unreleased and homebrews.

Let me know what you think!

Here's the link to my blog with the guide:

Cheers

PS: I've sorted the guide into 7 distinct subgenres that I thought were sensible. If you prefer, you can click on a system image and it will take you to the full list of shmups for that particular system only.

Thank you for this. Especially since the similar xenocide files (along with shmups.com ??) seem to missing from the interwebs.

I would add differing regional titles for each game wherever applicable. Example: Guardic Gaiden (JP)/The Guardian Legend (US/PAL).

I think it's worth mentioning games with major differences, as well. Salamander has an extra ending and up to three options/multiples tagging along with the ship instead of up to two like the US Life Force version.

I noticed Super Star Force is listed under vertical scrolling. While it has vertical shooting stages, it also has overhead stages similar to Guardian Legend. Guardian Legend also has a mode to play only the shmup stages. I'm not sure if "Shmup elements" is accurate since a good chunk of the game is shmup stages. Same deal with Xexyz, which also has a code to play only shmup stages.

I got one you might have missed. 8-bit Xmas 2013. You get to play as Santa and shoot at presents (think Galaga and Galaxian). It's made by Retrozone.

Thanks for the feedback

I actually considered the 8-bit Xmas carts, I went through all the years. I was going to add that but I decided not to last minute (didn't want to get too offtrack with the guide). I guess it doesn't hurt to add that title though since it is shmup oriented. I'll pop it back into the "fixed-screen, NES homebrew" section. :) PS: I had one in my shopping cart back in 2008 but decided not to get it. They go for like $500+ now?

In regards to the other comment about differing regional titles, I considered that too, but scrapped it for the same reason mentioned above. For the unaware readers, having redundant japanese/american titles can be confusing/misleading (for example seeing a game like Shin Jinrui: The New Type on the list, just to find out it's Dino and Riki on NES). However, I do see a need to add games with significant regional differences, like Gun Nac (JP) for example, which was censored for the US release. I'll make mention of this in a future update (as mentioned in the guide, this is still being worked on).

I think you're right about the shmup elements, that makes sense. I'll move The Guardian Legend to Vertical, with mention of overhead stages. I'll also make note of the Super Star Force overhead stages. Xexyz to me still feels more platformer than pure shmup (kind of like WURM), it's a tough call. I'll update the list for the other changes though.

Cheers!

Got that one too lol. If I remember correctly it's just a hack of Silkworm though.
