My posting quotes for others to finiancially gain from...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

This is a pressing issue that's been going on for the last few years with two respectable magazines published in the USA, namely Radio Control Car Action and R/C Driver. Take for example, in the December 2014 issue of R/C Driver, one contributing writer uses some of my posting words and key phrases to write their R/C car review for their financial gain -- I didn't see a single cent/dime in regards to the R/C article(s) whatsoever (but that's to be expected in this day of age -- rampant web text plagiarism taken from the forums). Sure, I've been asked via PMs from some fellow shmuppers if I was a paid writer for any websites or nationally published magazines but sadly, it isn't so. Plus the fact that my writing style, of course, makes for some easy reading anyways. At the very least, I get to see some of my keywords and/or phrases published nationally, anyways. -- so that is one slight nod towards ol' PCE-FX. I'm not even sure if the copy editors at both magazines know about this pressing issue at hand (could be clueless, indeed).

Is it that hard to write an original contributing article "out of the blue" for a nationally syndicated magazine? (Sure, I've personally seen R/C Car Action magazines distributed/sold at the Japanese hobby shops in Akihabara district of Tokyo back in early 2000 -- it has an international reading audience base besides the usual North American audience, in retrospect.)

I'm not going to name names from the two respected R/C magazines but I do know that there are some stealth lurker paid contributing writers whom do peruse some of my typical phrases, keywords and sometimes, even whole paragraphs taken out of context for their own paid benefit/gain directly from this respected/hallowed Shmups.org site. It's sad but it happens from time to time and does not benefit me whatsoever.

Am seriously considering thinking whether or not to post anymore here on Shmups.org over this issue of my posting keywords, phrases and sometimes, even whole paragraphs printed in these two particular magazines without my permission.

Sad that someone would copy / paste from forums for professional published writing.

Can you give a specific example, like, your original post and an excerpt from the article?

If I can find that December 2014 issue of R/C Driver (it's somewhere in the dang house), I'll have to look up the specific pages of the written article in question. It seems like the things I write pertaining to the Shmups forum topics could be liberally applied to any everyday topics but to see them published in a national magazine (or in this case two of them), hmmm...that's different.

There was a Retro Gamer mag contributor who was notorious for pulling the same shit: he'd start a topic on a certain message board asking for peoples' thoughts on [game xyz], paraphrase their responses and submit them as articles, or he'd take other people's private photos from gaming events and reprint them next to his own synopses to make it look like he'd been there when he hadn't, that sort of thing. People called him out on it and it became a bit of a running joke in the end but I don't think he ever really stopped doing it.

Eh, why am I not surprised? Thing was pretty much a pile of shit anyway. You need somebody with ethics at the editorial helm, but we all know that such characters are rare in games journo.

@ PC-E F X!: You've still got your dignity and also another cool cocktail party story. Sucks, though.

Yeah, It's a really weird feeling when that happens. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. I doubt they got very much money for writing the article anyway. Why not submit your review to the magazines first before posting them online?

That's pretty uncool! I'd also be interested in seeing the plagiarized text, which I really disapprove of in any form. I hope you don't actually stop posting on shmups forum though, as it's always fun to read your posts whenever they're around. I'd definitely miss you!

That fucking sucks, as do the "journalists" who'd do such things. FWIW from a leaf through in the newsagents I thought paying for Retro Gamer was about as appealing as testicular torsion, seems the ol' spidey sense was accurate.

I can imagine how offputting it must seem for this to happen PCEFX - I hope you keep posting here though!

Start posting bullshit and see if they pick it up.

Like those moronic "journalists" that take random posts on Twitter as "fact".
