I've read various conflicting theories of Gaiden's Gray Medals, but for all intents and purposes, those are random too.

It's a big oversight, honestly, when two players can have a score difference of 256,000 by the end of stage 1, despite playing exactly the same.
Isn't it 25,600? Annoying but not that important.

I might be confusing an extra 0, but isn't the highest point medal value in the hundreds of thousands? I'll have to fire up Gaiden again and see if I can get one of the random medals (lol), but I could swear there was a ridiculously high point value.

EDIT: On playing Gaiden, it is 51,200. I was remembering wrong.

The max value for the grey items is 51,200 points I think.

In terms of difficulty, how does the arcade version compare? Plus is a fun challenge without seeming like an uphill battle but I worry that the arcade version would leave me very angry. (Edit: checkpoints? fffff)
Of all of the versions of Darius 1, Plus is definitely the easiest. That being said, the difference isn't quite as jarring as you might expect; each version comes with its own challenges.

In Plus for example, the powerups can be very hard to see and tend to just float right up off the screen making things quite a bit harder than they ought to be. In arcade the powerups behave more reasonably, bouncing off of the ground before heaving up and off screen.

On the other hand in arcade the enemies tend to shoot more, and the massive screen combined with a tiny 4 shot limit means you have to be far more careful and deliberate with your offense. However that bigger screen actually gives you a lot of breathing room during boss fights, whereas in Plus the screen is so cramped that even King Fossil can pose a threat.

So basically, each version has it's own challenges that must be learned and mastered. Even though Plus is easier, it's not a bad starting point, and with a little extra work you should be able to transition smoothly into an arcade clear. Plus at least some of the arcade courses are straight up easy clears, like X course for example. Just remember, if you are going to play Darius arcade, play Extra, not Vanilla. Japan has already forgotten Vanilla, and the West needs to too.

Neither do I but I pre ordered it, looked at it extensively twice, and its been on the shelf since. Its also nice to know that the value of this book won't fall below purchased price, thats also another reason you bought it :P

Could this be a prelude to a new game announcement, or is it just more merchandise/soundtrack hawking?

Wow, that was rather unintelligible. In the words of Ron Burgundy, "This is really good news for all of us here?" Personally though, I am rather interested to see what this is all about.

Are there any pc engine Darius games that y'all recommend? I got myself a duo-r for Christmas, and I'm on the lookout for cool games.

Darius store sounds cool, and given Burst's continued moderate popularity, it wouldn't surprise me if we saw a new game around the actual anniversary of the series. I just hope the store reprints the Darius 1 poster that was being sold at Hey! last year, I'd kill for one.

Bother Super Darius and Super Darius II are great games. Super Darius is a pretty good home conversion of the first game. Though definitely different from the arcade original it's a good game. Go for Super over Plus for superior music and more boss variety.

Super Darius II is actually a completely different game from Darius II just within the same setting. You can think of it as Darius 2.5. Also has the best soundtrack in the series imo.

While I do like the PCE Darius games I don't necessarily think of them as the best ports/entries in the series. I prefer the MD port of Darius II over Super Darius II and do think that the first game is quite stale in regard to level design and enemy placement even when compared to the generous standards of its own series. As far as the "classic" Darii are concerned I hold Darius Force in high regard. Yeah, the checkpoint recovery isn't all that great but then again you pretty much are required to 1LC every Darius game anyway so it's not a paradigm shift or anything. It's also not too difficult even on the upper routes once you figured out that the lasers look flashy but are pretty much useless.

Be sure to check out Final Blaster, Psycho Chaser, Hana Tahka Daka!?, Override, Mr. Heli no Daibouken, Side Arms, Gradius, Detana!! TwinBee, Salamander and Dragon Saber (all of those titles are HuCards). Some of the ports contain neat improvements over their original source (PCE Salamander fixes the plethora of flaws that the somewhat rushed Arcade game is plagued with, Gradius doesn't get excessively difficult as soon as the second loop starts, Mr. Heli no Daibouken contains a beautiful Normal mode...) and shouldn't be ignored simply because they're not perfectly accurate. And for some reason unbeknownst to me, no one ever mentions console-exclusive games like Final Blaster despite their high quality. What a pity!

Thanks for the expert advice, guys. Extremely helpful! I've had a duo-r before in the past, but I realize now that I must've played only a small handful of games. Seems like so there are so many interesting titles to explore.

I'm very fond of Parodius Da!'s PCE- exclusive Special mode.

As for Darius games, Plus was the first one that grabbed me. It helped that it didn't throw me against the wall. I haven't compared to Super, but it's certainly an enjoyable Darius if you find it in your possession.

Super is really just an upgrade of Plus, they are mostly the same game. There are some minor differences in powerup distribution, and the music is taken directly from the arcade version rather than the low quality stuff used in Plus (the power of compact disc!). The biggest difference is that Super has more bosses and the bosses are distributed differently. Anyhow if you had access to both, Super is the better choice imo, but there's nothing wrong with Plus if that's all you had available.

As for the people saying that the first game is stale, I don't really feel that way personally, it's just a different kind of game, where you have to learn the properties of different enemy waves and how they behave and then face different combinations of them at the same time in varying circumstances. It's similar to a beat 'em up in that sense (only a few types of enemies combined in various ways to create a lot of different combat situations). But the arcade version is much better at this than the PCE because of the bigger screen and increased density of enemies. The 4 shot limit also has a much bigger impact on how the game is played in arcade. I guess if all you ever played was PCE I could see why you might think it was just decent.

This is a pretty interesting way of describing the first Darius game. I think I agree, even if the last two or three levels in Darius get pretty spammy with enemy spawning. I really need to jump back in to Extra and 1CC it - i mean, I already 1CC'd vanilla Darius.

Yesterday I got Super Darius II in an eBay auction. Someone in Canada was unloading a truly amazing collection of shmups. I bid mightily on like 10 items and only won 1 item, Super Darius II. I was pretty surprised about not winning more of the auctions. Anyway, looking forward to this! And thanks again for the advice.

So apparently the Darius Store is some sort of monthly thing(s) you can buy for lots of money? That's a bit of a letdown. That box is cool and might fit a Darius PCB though...

I don't suppose anyone here has played Darius Alpha for PCE. Or maybe it has been emulated, and in that case: What's it like? I'm guessing it's not worth $1000 gameplay wise.
