Getting an old arcade cab : help evaluating crt condition

Post by keropi »

Hiya!

I gave it some thought and decided I needed to buy an old arcade cab with a crt screen  , restore it and then decide if I make it a mame cab or start collecting some boards ....

Made some calls and one of these days I'm gonna see some older cabs and possibly buy one if they are not complete junk.
But is there a quick tip or two on what to look on the screens to ensure they are not worked to death?
I'll obviously power on the cabs to decide what to take , I know to look for phosphor burning but I believe there is more I can see if I know where/what to look.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated, thanks! :D

1) Obvious physical damage. Unfixable.

2) visible burn in - often insert credit or some logo. Unfixable

3) Internal condition of monitor neck board - bulging/leaking caps and transformer, warped components - repair required.

4) Convergence - may be fixable just by tweaking, or capacitor replacement.

5) Geometry - may be fixable just by tweaking, or capacitor replacement.

6) Colour - may be fixable just by tweaking, or capacitor replacement... as long as the behavior/visual appearance appears consistent across screen.

...Chances are supply is going to dictate your options more than your observations/choice. Only you can gauge what you're comfortable with, but be canny with what you're looking at and who you're dealing with and you might be able to negotiate a deal or two.
