I wanna gripe about the StarFox series.

Post by JBC »

I missed out on alot of Nintendo since the 64 era, despite having had a Gamecube during it's day. I don't think I ever got anything for it that wasn't a Capcom title back then.

I was really hoping StarFox Assault would be more like the traditional StarFox games, but it looks like the opening stage was just a tease. I played a little of Adventures too, & even though it's flight levels are fun I just don't care about controlling the characters or running around in their universe. I just want spaceship combat. So that means StarFox Command is maaaybe the only real one I haven't played & that came out 8 years ago.

How does Kid Icarus (awesomely) get turned into a rail shooter when it was originally so far off that beat... & a rail shooter like StarFox get turned into a platforming combat adventure? & Kid Icarus only got that one sequel on a small-time platform, then disappeared back into the ether?

I don't know anything about the new one yet, so hopefully it's just straight up rail shooting. Have I not missed out on anything? Is StarFox 64 - from way back in my childhood - literally the last real StarFox title?

Yup SF64 is the last console title that's just straight rail shooting.

I'd still give SF Assault a chance, I quite enjoyed it, and it's 5-6 hour length felt perfect.

I'm gonna keep playing because it does feel quality, but it's not what I expect out of the brand. It makes StarFox 2's cancellation even more of a shame, be it playable in emulators or not. Officially, we have 2 real StarFox games & 64 is basically a remake - meaning 1.

I thought I was the only one that liked assault! Glad to see someone else likes it.

I never played Command, but I don't think I missed anything.

Command is a sort of reworking of a lot of the ideas from SF2 that weren't used in SF64; it's interesting in its own way but not an arcade-style game in the slightest. The multiple story endings are, uh, inspired.

Assault was originally intended to be more of a multiplayer arcade/LAN game, IIRC. I can't remember what happened that forced them to change focus... maybe Nintendo's interest in the arcade/"Triforce" aspect of the Namco deal fizzled out? Who knows.

Adventures is a terrible Rareware game that was reskinned as a Starfox game at the behest of Nintendo. You needn't bother with it.

Miyamoto's deal with the Starfox IP is that he sees it more as a testbed for certain development techniques and isn't overly fussed about adhering to any particular genre or framework, yet he can't seem to draw a connection between the diminishing sales of the franchise and the fact that every game since SF64 has been some sort of weird deviation from what made the series popular to begin with.

Some of what he showed/talked about at E3 seemed okay but he also showed some totally un-SF demos (a robot sumo game and a tower defense thing) and implied they might be part of the SF Wii U "package", whatever that means.

Just start praying that the upcoming Wii U game is good and goes back to the series roots ..

Nintendo seems to have this weird "broken" view of things in general.

Evidenced by Sakurai's reasoning behind removing story and cutscenes from the latest Smash Bros. (he did it because the ones from Brawl were posted to youtube)

I'm a fan of Star Fox Assault as well, though I have to warn you, there are two tortuously terrible wing-riding sections. Steel yourself when you get to missions 4 and especially 7.

Let's do a mental retcon a la The Matrix sequels: there are only two StarFox games, both on the SNES.

It's best to think of Star Fox Assault as a versus multiplayer game that had a dull single-player campaign wedged into it only because it's an expectation of the series. The engine was clearly not designed for on-rails shooting, either, even Adventures handled those segments better.

This might irk others, but I always kind of looked at SF Assault as what Miyamoto probably envisioned initially, but wasn't able to do it with the SNES or N64 hardware. Think about it.... Back in 1992 when they were developing the first game Shiggy's wishlist probably would have included the ability to free-roam, get into other vehicles and even explore and shoot things while on foot.

...All of which ended up in SF Assault.

Like everyone else I would have proffered more spaceship shooting instead of all the tank or on-foot areas but really the only thing I disliked about the game was that the on-foot controls were too twitchy.
But fans will likely never be happy unless its just like the first 2 (or 3 if you count SF2) games in the series.
