Korean/chinese shmups?

Post by ashygal »

I was playing the mushihimesama duei on ipad earlier and it got me thinking if there are any other korean or chinese shmups out there that are actually good? Duel is a totally different game to the original. Graphics are not as great.

Are all of the non japanese asian shmups junk? Just like duel?

There are quite a few old Korean arcade STGs out there by Dooyong and SunA. All of them are terrible. Skonec, the Korean (assisted by some Japanese) developers of the Psyvariar series and Homura, were the sole exception in the arcade market.

The 80's/90's PC gaming scene in South Korea produced a number of STGs. I've heard that The Day series is decent, but all these games are very difficult to track down in playable form nowadays, as is getting them to run on modern setups. (Derboo at HG101 is an expert on vintage Korean gaming, and can probably hook you up with this stuff.) Especially since the country parted ways with its video gaming past once Starcraft and MMOs hit it big. There's almost no remaining scene in SK for any games without online multiplayer, nor is there any evident amount of nostalgia for older Korean-produced titles.

I am unaware of a single Chinese or Taiwanese-made STG that isn't mobile shovelware. The PS3 ports of Raiden IV and Caladrius were handled for Moss by a studio in Shanghai, though.

I had forgotten about Bee Storm, but I still consider it below average for the genre. A DDP game where the laser doesn't immediately bite through popcorn enemies is hardly a DDP at all.

Shotia can't, at least not on stage 1.

In my experience that's standard behavior for shot type in DDP games.
It's even a boss mechanic of some kind in DDP, your laser is hindered a lot by white shells if you're shot type, and red shells hinder it even if you're laser type.

Baryon (DOS, Korean) is pretty good though.

There is this really weird and eerie Korean indie shmup called Chataan (download link in description): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15AVE3O5M0U

The music is ripped from various Metal Slug games, but I think it works fairly well.

It's not, it's junk just like she says.

I'm a bit surprised there aren't more obscure K/C arcade shmups from the 90s that were trying to capitalize on the success of Japanese games. Surely there have to be some unknown gems lurking somewhere in MAME...

I'm curious about this. I know they did the porting, but did they have any hand in developing the new content or was that all directed in Japan? Evolution Mode in Caladrius Blaze is really really excellent stuff.

Yes! Came in here to say this. Fun game and a cheap pcb to pick up. No ports I don't think? Kinda reminds me of a psikyo game.

One of the Korean arcade developers that made shmups was Afega. I've got Guardian Storm, which has a Psikyo feel. I wouldn't put it in my yearly top-25 list but I do toss it in from time to time.

I've read that they worked on a few others but I haven't tried them.

Angel Destroyer. Korean doujin based on Japanese anime. Great music, repetitive art assets, legit patterns. This video makes it look kinda crappy, especially with the lack of the game's soundtrack backing it up.
