Famicom Case Inserts

Post by Strider77 »

I've been working on making inserts for all my cardboard boxed famicom games. I still have about 5 more to do.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

No they are the Namco famicom cases except blaster master. That one is in a sunsoft famicom case. Some companies did use plastic cases.

That's what they looked like. Where'd you bag so many spares?

I bought random lots of famicom Namco sports games etc. I could get around 4 or so for about 15.00 US dollars.

Those boxed games are so pricy I cringe when opening the box and I don't want the carts just sitting out either. I have a scanner now and that makes things so much easier.

I still need to do Holy Diver, City Connection, Super C, Dracula 3 and I guess that's it for now.

It's a real shame that Famicom games didn't all come in such clamshell boxes. I think only Namco, Taito, Sunsoft and Koei had clamshells (for some, but not all games). Am I missing any other publishers?

I disagree. Cardboard box Famicom / Super Famicom / NES are pretty much the ultimate form of collectible game packaging in my opinion.

Japanese Mega Drive stuff is also decent but only when compared to jewell box games.

Super Famicom box art was often amazing and had a large format, but the box shape/size and cartridges were standardized. Famicom is absolutely amazing in this regard. Different box shapes, tons of cart styles, and tons of colors of cartridges.

When they started standardizing packing style, spines, etc it went downhill for me.

I do have a bit of a HuCard fetish though, but I couldn't care less about the jewell cases they are packed in.

Only if Hudson Soft made some translucent multi-colored Hu-Card cart shells (aside from the plain-vanilla white colored Hu-Cards manufactured), that would've been ace back in the late 1980s and into the early 1990s with the PC Engine gaming scene. I'm sure with homebrew PCE carts nowadays, it's do-able.

Those look really nice Strider, great job. Makes me want to pick up some of those cheap clamshell games as well and go looking for cart only versions of the famicom titles I've thought about getting instead of CIB ones, the thing that's been holding me back like you say are those prices.

Are there any good sources for famicom box/manual scans, does anyone know?
I know videogameden.com has some manual scans but that's about it, when I google some of the titles I'd like I can never find decent box scans..

It can be difficult. I've been scanning my own boxes. I can help with what I have. Otherwise you have to hunt or improvise..

These last two are beautiful.

I hate cardboard boxes as well, which I think is why on some subconscious level I went from SNES to MD collecting back in the day.

I enjoy doing on a level. I have a vicious OCD streak and the actual process of playing with the images in Photoshop kinda appeases it in ways.

I'm working on Castlevania 3 right now and this one I've put ALOT of hours into. It's the only one so far where I haven't just recreated the original box. It's nearly done. Then I just have City Connection left. Well that is till Ninja Gaiden 2 and Double Dragon show up in the mail.

If anyone wants any of these or has requests let me know.

They all look great. I especially like Akumajou Dracula's, that artwork lends itself surprisingly well to FC dimensions.

I don't mind FC/SFC cardboard too much, since I separate my game media and packaging for happier coexistence of both (stow the former in generic blank storage for safe, easy access / display the latter for the XTREEM unknown geek pleasures of a fat, colourful game shelf). But rugged and aesthetically pleasing snapcases always beat largely ornamental boxes.

Now that's impressive, best of both worlds with the FC logo and NES artwork. Really like how you preserved the FC cover's composition, background colour and Konami logo too.

Yeah... That one was a bitch. Alot of erasing and redrawing in the blank areas. Then having to shuffle a few things around to get it to look centered properly and not have the logos cut things off oddly.

That one took a lot of work.

Continuing to look damn good!

Hyper obscurum (or perhaps not ;3 ): both coverart's character designs were used in later projects (Ryukenden OVA and Double Dragon II PCE's cutscenes, though unfortunately not the in-game sprites). The chibi Billy and Jimmy on the FC spine also show up in the PCE version's options menu.
