I think the thing that pisses me off the most about the SFIV series is getting more super meter when getting hit. It's like being punished for doing well.

Isn't every Street Fighter is like that?MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:I think the thing that pisses me off the most about the SFIV series is getting more super meter when getting hit. It's like being punished for doing well.

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
If I remember correctly the other games you built up more super meter for doing the damage rather than taking it. You would still get super meter when getting knocked around, just not nearly as much as SFIV doles out.cicada88 wrote:Isn't every Street Fighter is like that?MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:I think the thing that pisses me off the most about the SFIV series is getting more super meter when getting hit. Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
The bigger issue than getting lots of meter for being hit is that almost every Ultra is a devastating instant reversal.

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
Wow. It is nice to see lots of love for SF here.
Super Turbo (HD Remix too).
You can make a case for it being the best in the series. I've played a ton of it over the years. Sometimes not playing it for ages and then reconnecting with it like that old friend (that one where no matter how much time passes it's like you saw them yesterday). Sure Claw is borderline retarded in it, but it's fast, DEEP, and most of all fun.
And even though it took me 15 years to really get into it - 3rd Strike.
I love the music and overall presentation. And it is a minor complaint, but I wish they included the backgrounds from 2nd Impact.
Mind you I'm trash at it at this point and can't wrap my head around parries at all. I've always played charge characters though..
Slightly OT - but this is my perfect version of SF:
Super Turbo speed
Roster from Ultra IV - I'll take Ultra's balance too, most of the cast at this point seems viable (from what I have read).
3rd Strike graphics/presentation
4 bar super meter from IV - Super art when full
Parries are fine on the ground, but no air parries/air blocking. Jumping in should always be a calculated risk.
No damage scaling

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
HD Remix was ruined by a combination of the awful redone graphics (which looked better in previews, but they cut corners to meet deadlines), the schizophrenic OC Remix soundtrack that jumps between ridiculous unfitting styles for every song, and David Sirlin being an idiot. Capcom didn't even attempt to subject the Japanese playerbase to it.
If I was going to design a rebalance of Third Strike - not that I'd be any more qualified to than Sirlin - I'd make fireballs impossible to parry. It never fit the fundamentals of SF's spacing game to have projectiles so easily nullified.

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
I'll admit I rather like the HD graphics, but they look mildly funny with the old animation. I rather like most of the OC Remix too, especially Fei's theme. It takes different strokes to move the world though.Pretas wrote:HD Remix was ruined by a combination of the awful redone graphics (which looked better in previews, but they cut corners to meet deadlines), the schizophrenic OC Remix soundtrack that jumps between ridiculous unfitting styles for every song, and David Sirlin being an idiot. As someone who runs charge characters I would be totally on board with making fireballs parry proof. Granted I have just started playing 3rd Strike and don't have nearly the amount of hours into it I wish I did, but I don't think it would tilt the game unfairly towards projectile characters. It might make things hellish for some of the cast, but lots characters still have plenty of ways to get in on you even if you take away their ability to parry fireballs.
I don't parry much now unless it is well...accidental

I may get shit for this, but I am OK turning parries off in the menu and playing it without them. It is still a damn fine game, although it feels more like an update to Super Turbo in that case. Not a bad thing.
Since Remy is the only character I have spent significant time with I will say I think he could benefit from either a larger stun gauge or a damage buff, but I don't think he would need both. Both would be nice though. Of course we both know it will never happen so...

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
The thing that drives me batty with HD Remix is how all the characters suffer from stocky goofball syndrome. Everyone is vertically small and horizontally huge. Ken and Ryu probably look the worst, almost like they have down syndrome.

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
I never really got into the SF series beyond a casual perspective. Owned all the 16 Bit versions, but couldn't get anyone to keep going at it until we were really learning to play the game. As playing against the CPU you really don't learn anything but how to abuse it's weak programing.
Once I discovered MAME I right away went toward MK1 & 2, and hooked up online to play with the best MK players in the world and online. Even joined a forum were all the MK players gathered. And playing with the best finally got me good enough to see things from far beyond a casual view. Even got in a tournament with the finals video still on YouTube where I somehow lucked out big time and made it in second overall somehow. Man, I was so freaking nervous, that I started chocking way too much. Especially in that final match, which I totally bombed because I couldn't believe I lucked out in making it that far.
I go by the name of Thief. In the first vid I started with the worst character + that I haven't yet figured out enough (ie. think I totally forgot to go invisible even once, which is the main thing with that character) cause I wasn't taking myself seriously and was to afraid of being a jerk and picking to good of a kit and winning because of that. lol

There's really nothing impressive about these vids at all for a final tournament. And with me being so insanely tensed up, there as no way I was risking any complex combos only to fail and leave myself open, lol. So yeah, I sure sucked big time, I guess...
Oh, and there of some vids with me and the master of MK1. Soultaker. I've learned the most about MK1 from him. The first time I played him we went for like 50 matches and none once did I beat him, lol. But I enjoyed every minute of it.
Well it turns out he recorded us a few times we played. Only thing that sucked about playing with him was that he was from across the ocean and we could never get a good enough connection. Sigh.
Anyways, here's me really getting licked by the master of MK1 everytime... not even sure why I'm showing this? Wish I would of left a better legacy? Maybe it's time I come out of retirement? I do got the MK arcade stick and the Klassic Kollection on 360 now too...

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
Thinking of the question, I realize that I've never played enough Street Fighter. It has always been random SF II hacks and Champion Turbo Super revisions (rather old ones) in the arcade and the same older variants and Alpha on emulators (crippled by using the keyboard).
So, for me, the definitive version of Street Fighter is the pen and paper roleplaying game published by White Wolf: you travel the world engaging in tournaments and opposing M. Bison' Shadoloo organization, armed with extensive rules about martial art skills and combat maneuvers. There are fairly reasonable character sheets for all SSFII game characters.

No wonder Capcom is where it is in the state that it is today...the last 2 posters' favorite Street Fighter games are Mortal Kombat 1 on MAME and an RPG via Loose-leaf paper

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
I can understand why though.
Mine is Street Fighter 2, vanilla, no turbo hyper fighting chun li fireballs champion boobsocks edition. With some affection for Alpha 1 and 2.
Really how many remakes can you make of such a thing. It'd be like trying to make some kind of. sequel to chess. Like some kinda.. Chess 2, but what kind of douchey person would do such a thing.
Much prefer the Melty Blood style of expansion, where at least you have a stable ever-rising base. The guys who complained about the complete roster toss up in S.Fighter 3 had a point - you spend 10,000 hours learning the eight (or 12 or 16) basic characters and then all that gets yanked out from under you completely?

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
Revisions, not remakes. Each iteration of SF2 brought about at least a few significant changes, not to mention the differences between later SF games (Alpha 1 to Alpha 2, Second Impact to Third Strike, etc).Really how many remakes can you make of such a thing.
The "rehashing" shtick is pretty tired. How well would you receive someone saying the same thing about STG?
The chess example is entirely irrelevant, though yes, Sirlin is a little full of himself. He's headed some shoddy ports, a half-baked rebalance of ST and a card game. I don't know where he gets the idea that he should be making anything, let alone a sequel to chess.
Also, learning how to use new characters/tools is one of the best things about fighting games. The main reason people complained about SF3's cast was because most of the characters were boring and/or shit.

Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
Boring and shit describe most of the characters in Street Fighter II. It's unfortunate that that game's line-up became iconic, but I guess it's to be expected from the first competitive fighting game. The only design I really like is Fei Long's, and I can't give Capcom much credit for him, since he's a copy of Bruce Lee.

I like Samurai Showdown 2.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

In that vein, I'm going to go with Super Puzzle Fighter then, which I think i've spent far more time playing than any 'real' SF game.jonny5 wrote:Pocket Fighter

Third Strike is sublime. Alpha 2 & 3 are pretty fantastic as well.
Granted, they're all top-notch games (except SF1). Even the EX series.

It's pretty surprising how much fun Street Fighter EX2+ is. Been a while since I've played it, my friends are busy playing USF4 and BBCP (blah).
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
i dunno how anyone could think third strike has a boring roster, the game is full of weirdos. plus only in SFIII can you get moments like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d6TMw8hx4U
Re: what's your definitive version of street fighter?
+1 for 3rd Strike having horrible chara design.
Allow me to add shitty music to the minuses.
Okay it's got fantastic fighting game mechanics and impressive 2D animation (sometimes over-the-top though), but that's it.
