BVM 2016P & PVM 1954Q Questions

Post by ryan_lirui »

Hi all,

I've got a couple of questions for you, thanks in advance for your help!

I am putting together an arcade machine, and I have already bought a Sony BVM 2016P and a PVM 1954Q display.

I started out using my PVM to configure my arcade set up as I assumed it was the less pricey of the two, but I've come to notice that if I leave the screen on over time I get flashes or pulses of blue on the screen. They're subtle, but noticeable and get really annoying over time. I have also noticed that if I leave the screen on and even disconnect the video connection, and keep my display distanced from other displays, my computer, or speakers that it will still pulse. Tapping the side of the screen doesn't seem to have much of an effect either. I have also tried using the degaussing button enough times to know that this isn't helping either.

I have run the monitor at low resolutions (640x240, and 512x240), and through my arcadevga 5000 video card at 15khz but something seems to be messed.

What could be the problem? How expensive/possible is it to fix?

For my BVM, I was hoping you could give me some suggestions on whether this above set up will be acceptable or not? I have tried it out briefly, and so far the monitor seems to be in better shape than my PVM and the image is very nice.

I am running my signal through to RGB + ext sync component.

Looks like some component is dying inside the monitor, which is prolly over 20 years old at this point.

I doubt anyone here can conjure up a guess as to what part that might be though. Either take the set down to a specialist or look into finding a replacement, hopefully of a newer build.

OK, fair enough.

Then regarding the display that isn't having problems, does anyone know where to get the manual for a BVM 2016p? I have looked all over the place and have been able to find manuals for other units, just not this one in particular.

What I would love to know most is:
Does it support 15khz and 31khz modes or just 15khz?
Does it support both NTSC and PAL?
What is its maximum resolution?
What vertical frequency should it be running off? 60hz?
Is a 1V RGB signal fine, or does it need a 5V connection? (so far it seems like 1V is fine)

When was it made? I think it will be 15KHz only, however.

I really wish I knew, but all I have is the model name and no manual. I saw this at a local store and it looked like a good find so I picked it up. There's no indication of manufacture date on the case.

Every BVM / PVM I've seen has a manufacture date on the info sticker on the back. If somebody tore that off, there should still be a manufacture date on a little sticker on the CRT itself (on PVMs/BVMs that might have a metal shield around it, which is where that sticker will be).

A description of the back panel inputs could be suggestive here. Does it have an old VTR port? Or a blocky "RGB" port? If it has BNC style inputs for RGB, are they also labeled for component? Does it have SDI input? Most importantly, is there any input card with a description on it, i.e. "BKM-129x"?

I took some pictures of the back there, but at any rate - I found a place online that was selling the manual, broke down and purchased it. I should be expecting it on Monday or Tuesday.

Wow, that's got to be old. Those input boards aren't labeled or even appear to be easily swapped. 15KHz only, I'm sure. The lack of a date puzzles me.

Would definitely like to see this thing in action and whatever details you had. I'd like to see the internals of it, too...
