A Quiver of Crows - PC/Mac/Linux

Post by Sheado »

Hi All,

My small indie team of 3 (including myself) are working on a twin-stick shooter/shmup for PC/Mac/Linux. We've been playing shmups for years (decades actually =) and have finally decide to jump in and develop one of our own: A Quiver of Crows - http://www.AQuiverOfCrows.com
The game has been in development for 6 months now and we've got about another 3-6 months to go. Here are some of the main design aspects we're striving for:

No Space, Ships, or Planes!
Although we love all these things, it seems like they are often present in shmups. So we've tried our best to mix things up by going with an organic flesh and bones (and feathers) approach =]

You play as a crow.
Image

Twin-Stick 360 Degree Action
I understand everybody has a different definition for what a shmup is and the most traditional is often "auto-scrolling, left to right or bottom to top." Although R-Type, Ikaruga, and Jamestown are amongst our favorite games, we want to stretch the traditional definition a bit in hopes of standing out and offering a familiar yet less common experience.

Shoot and fly in 360 degrees
Image

Upgradable Weapons, Bombs, Shields
These are a must for a us and we hope to achieve all that we set out to do in this category. We already have parallel spread heavy bullets, triple spread small bullets, laser beam, sine wave bullets, and heat seeking quills.

Multiple weapons types. This is the triple-spread small bullet
Image

Less Time Dodging Bullets
This is a controversial one. Most shmups can unofficially be categorized as high-skill maze games since the player must carefully steer through the maze of bullets while shooting the enemy. We love this style of gameplay, but in an effort to bring a less common experience we want the player to spend more time avoiding the enemies themselves while actively deciding on the trajectory of the bullets they are firing.

AI
This might be controversial too. Rather than attack patterns, enemies have AI and will chase you down. Some will melee (e.g. bite or dart into you) while others keep a distance and shoot bullets at you.

Local / Couch Co-op
We miss the days of playing a video game with a friend in the same room!

Controller Support
Keyboard and mouse is cool and we'll support it, but our favorite way to play these things is with a gamepad.

Satisfying Ragdoll Physics
When dispatching of an enemy, rather than watching them explode or fall apart, they "ragdoll" and fall to the ground. Shoot up a bunch of enemies in the same place and their bodies or skeletons will pile up on the ground!

So.. What do you all think based on this first impression?
Is this something you would want to play?
Is PC/Mac/Linux cool with you? Or do you prefer other platforms?

The game is almost at alpha. Hopefully, we'll have a gameplay trailer soon and shortly after that we plan on setting up a Steam Greenlight campaign.
Thanks for reading! And follow us on twitter @AQuiverOfCrows for the latest updates on our project.

This looks great! I absolutely love the art style (especially the desert scenes), and going for a switch up in style for this genre seems like a fantastic idea.

Here are some initial questions:

1) Do you plan on having a sort of playable demo in the near future, especially when you go for greenlight? I really want to try this out. Though I'd support it without one.

2) Is multiplayer going to be local only? (Not saying that's a bad thing! Just wondering)

3) What are the main types of projectiles that the crow and enemies are shooting? I see feathers but what else is going on there?

4) Any plans for mobile release? Between the game play and art style, I think mobile devices would really benefit from this type of game. Also, mobile players apparently REALLY LOVE side scrolling bird games...

This looks really cool :) And I think the George Martin-esque name definitely helps get attention, too haha

To your questions:
1) Do you plan on having a sort of playable demo in the near future, especially when you go for greenlight? I really want to try this out. Though I'd support it without one.
We definitely want to do public alpha and beta builds to get some feedback on the game. We've always incorporated community feedback in our apps and games, and we hope to do the same for this one. Given our dev schedule though, the public alpha may not happen until a month or so after we launch the Greenlight campaign.
2) Is multiplayer going to be local only? (Not saying that's a bad thing! Just wondering)
We're a tiny team on a ramen budget. So it's just going to be couch co-op. We love playing couch co-op games, but we understand the need for online co-op. At the moment though, it's not feasible for us to add online co-op.
3) What are the main types of projectiles that the crow and enemies are shooting? I see feathers but what else is going on there?
We want to add as many projectile types as our dev schedule will allow. At the moment we have the following weapons:
  • Plasma Bullets - In the second screenshot above, the white & blue bullets come out of an aura at the front of the crow. These bullets upgrade from firing singles, then doubles in parallel. More upgrades are still being designed for this one.
Mini Bullets - In the third screenshot above, the purple bullets come out of the crow's beak. The bullets upgrade from firing singles, to triples spread at an angle. More upgrades are still being designed for this one.
Laser Beam - A solid laser beam that extends as far as necessary to reach its obstacle.
Sine Wave Bullet - A triple spread of bullets that are emitted in a sine wave pattern.
Heat Seeking Quills - These come out of the body of the crow and will randomly lock onto different enemies in the scene.
That's just what we have at pre-alpha and we hope to add several more.
4) Any plans for mobile release? Between the game play and art style, I think mobile devices would really benefit from this type of game. Also, mobile players apparently REALLY LOVE side scrolling bird games...
Our background is in mobile and it just seems to us that niche games like this could struggle on those platforms. We are currently focusing on PC/Mac/Linux and would like to publish on those platforms first. After that though, if there's enough interest we would definitely consider mobile. P.S. If Microsoft or Sony people are reading this and are interested we'd love to put the game on the XBox One and/or PS4

Hey Everybody,

It's been a few months since we got greenlit - we've been hard at work and so I just wanted to post a progress update. Thanks again to all who voted for us!

Once we got approved on Steam, we set up our Steam store page for A Quiver of Crows. It's going to be our first game on Steam, and simply having this page is such an awesome morale boost! We've also been posting artwork and more frequent progress updates in the community hub for the game.

Once we got all the store page business squared away we jumped right back into development. Here are some highlights of our progress so far:

Weapon Upgrades
Thanks to all of you awesome people we got tons of advice on weapon upgrades in this poll/thread we posted. We ended up going with floating orbs for upgrades - sometimes dropped by enemies, other times simply placed throughout a stage. Weapons are earned over time and you can switch between them on the fly. Same goes for special attacks, but you must pick up ammo for those. It's going to be impossible to make everybody happy (as the poll indicated people's various tastes in upgrade systems) - so we took our favorite aspects from each system and went with something that we enjoy. Hopefully others will like it too!
See image below for a weapon upgrade orb (floating in front of the crow) and the gauges in the top-left - representing health, selected special attack, and select primary weapon.

Objectives
Since this is a twin-stick 360 degree non-auto-scrolling shooter, we decided to include basic objectives to drive the player into different parts of the stage. In each stage, your fellow crows are trapped in cages - fly to them and shoot the doors off to rescue to them. You can rescue them in any order you want and take any path you prefer.
Image

Music
We've also been chipping away at more music. Here's a sneak peek.

More Art!
Two more lovely areas designed. Check it out!

Effects
Another thing we've been working on are particle effects - for the weapons, for magical areas, and for our dear crow. Below are some of those works in progress:

Closed Alpha
We recently got to do our first closed friends and family alpha test. After nearly a year of development it feels great to finally get some feedback on the game! We've already squished some bugs and added some design tasks since the first round of feedback. We'll probably do a few more closed alphas before opening it up to the public.
See below - the controls for the game:

Anyway, that's it for now!
:D 8)  :P :)  8) :P  :P   :D

Hey Everybody,

Just a quick update and feedback request.
Here's the first snippet of alpha gameplay footage from A Quiver of Crows. This is one of the more difficult levels - approximately 40 minutes into the game.

What are your first impressions?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hi All,

Just another quick update on the game.
Image
This gif is from a stage about half-way through the game. At this point you have 3 permanent weapons you can switch between. Getting hit knocks you down an upgrade, but we've done our best to have upgrade drops to be frequent enough so that it's not too punishing. There's also 3 permanent special attacks at this point, but you have to pick up ammo in order to use those. You might also notice that dead enemies don't disappear - instead they become obstacles for your bullets - so you have to work around that by either by shooting around them, using a heavy weapon to knock them out of the way, or using a laser beam to shoot through them.

Howdy!

Our game is launching October 19th!
Image

It's been about 2.5 years since we started working on this and the game's design has slowly evolved over time. To recap what we have now:
The game offers a 360 degree range of motion, 4 weapons, each upgradable up to 4 levels, as well as 3 special attacks - all of which need to be earned by completing certain stages. Once earned weapons cannot be lost, but the weapons do get downgraded when the player receives damage. We've implemented an algorithm that drops upgrades at a fair rate so that it isn't disappointingly punishing when getting downgraded. We also decided to make enemies ragdoll on death so that they can block the players' bullets - resulting in dynamic obstacles that the player has to deal with by either avoiding them, shooting them out of the way with a heavy weapon, or through them with a laser beam. Players can play solo or local co-op and should be sure to expect extremely challenging gameplay.

Hey Everybody!

Our twin-stick shoot'em - A Quiver of Crows - is finally out!

The game's most unique aspects are:
  • Ragdoll physics that block your bullets. Some people love this. Some hate it. Check out the let's plays on YouTube to see if you'd like it.
  • 360 degree range of motion. No auto scrolling or rails.
  • Crows! Everything is organically inspired. Enemies are mostly skeletal creatures or ghostly things.
  • Local co-op!
Please check it out!
