couple of problems with sony bvm-20f1u

Post by ClintTX »

Hey all, I just got my 1st RGB monitor that I bought on eBay hooked up and running my model 1 genesis. Having a couple of small issues, and I wanted to see if you all could help. The first I think I have determined is not due to the monitor, but may be the game cartridges. I get these colored lines, usually on the border of the screen, but also sometimes closer to the center of the screen when menus are displayed.

Here is the pic

The second issue which I'm pretty sure is the actual monitor (Sony bvm-20f1u) is that the image vibrates very slightly in a mostly up and down manner. The monitor itself doesn't move only the on screen image, and it is a very fine oscillation, only a pixel or line or two. It is mainly just a very slight annoyance, as most of the time during play, I don't even notice it. I have tried hooking the system up on a different circuit in the house, as I thought it might be interference from the power, but I get the same problem on all circuits in the house.

The colored lines are definitely from the console signal itself and would normally be hidden due to overscan on consumer TVs. If you have the control unit you can adjust this.

The "jittering" problem with 240p content appears to be normal on those particular BVMs for some reason as many owners have reported about the same issue here.

Well, I'm not sure it's just a matter of overscan because in this picture you can see the lines sometimes happen in places on the actual screen. I even hooked up to a 13" plain Sony Trinitron using composite and the lines were still visible, leading me to think it's a cartridge problem. Like bad caps or the mask rom is bad.

What menu do I need to go into in order to try to get the lines out of the picture? Is it in the alignment menu?

Actually I have absolutely no jitter on my bvm with ANY console except the PS2. I think it comes down to the cables. I don't mean to sound like an ad but I recommend the ones from retro console accessories on ebay. I put my face up to the screen with the Genesis and every pixel is completely at peace lol. With the PS2 the entire screen gets that up down shakiness so it might be my cables (which were from the same seller) or just the PS2. The PS2 was known for having shimmering so that might be unavoidable.

For adjustments you should go to the maintenance area and type code 1111 or 9999 and then go to the E board. You get the most choices there but be careful not to mess up.

The lines could just be a fault in the game itself. For instance, the original SMB has little horizontal lines that flicker on screen from time to time and these are apparently just normal behavior. It could very well be that these games always exhibited this behavior and you just never noticed it until you were paying particular attention to picture quality.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I picked up a 20f1u today myself and seem to be having the same issue. Everything jitters up and down a bit for a few seconds, then slows down, stays stable for a few seconds, then slowly starts jittering again, and repeats. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do about this? This is also without anything connected, just the menu text against a black screen.
