Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
My Sony W7 is flashing fast in and out of signal when i connect my Wii (480I is fine) and original Xbox to the XRGB-3 through the D in 1/2. What can i do to fix this. Is it a TV or XRGB issue?
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
From what we have seen with Sixtyfortyfive's recent adventure, it's an XRGB3 issue.
You'd better connect your 480p-capable consoles directly to the W7's component input, or use a transcoder, or a video processor like a DVDO.

I guess i need to use another component switch.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Yeah, the XRGB3 is an awesome processor but not a great switching matrix anyway.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
I think i'll just omit running those component sources through the XRGB then. Not sure how much it matters with the Wii and Xbox anyway since they are both relatively new consoles with 480p capability and i guess it's mostly 240p and 480i that's processed badly by the tv scaler.Xyga wrote:Yeah, the XRGB3 is an awesome processor but not a great switching matrix anyway.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
The W7 handles 240p, 480i and 480p all pretty well through its component input (480i looks really alright with 'speed preference' off, you should try it if you haven't yet).spaceape wrote:i guess it's mostly 240p and 480i that's processed badly by the tv scaler.
The XRGB-3 in B1 is better at 240p of course, and you can take advantage of the fast single-field handling for 480i in B1 when required.

All 240p consoles, the one 480i (PS2) & Dreamcast VGA through the XRGB-3 -> SLG3000 -> TC1600 transcoder -> Component Switch Input -> Component Switch Output -> TV
Original Xbox & Wii 480P (& future 480P+ consoles) -> Component Switch Input -> Component Switch Output -> SLG HD -> TV.
By setting it up like this i can also limit the use of the SLG HD to only 480P and higher resolutions. Obviously i still need to turn each of the SLG's on & off respectable to the source signals i feed through them.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Personally I would wire the PS2 directly to the component switch, and the DC to a VGA>HDMI transcoder.
The reason is I find the W7's handling of the PS2's 480i better suited than the XRGB3's, especially for people who play essentially non-timing-critical games like RPGs.
If that's not your priority and absolutely want scanlines on all PS2 games then yes, let it go through the XRGB3 + SLG3000.
And the DC will look better through a transcoder, you could use the TC1600 but since it's busy and there's the ratio issue, a VGA to HDMI transcoder would be ideal IMHO.
EDIT: unless you want scanlines on the DC as well ?

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
VGA to HDMI gives you that VESA/SMPTE resolution troubles again. In other words: the DC's resolution won't be fully detected this way and you end up with "soft columns" in between due to the improper sampling.and the DC to a VGA>HDMI transcoder.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Indeed, but I found myself unable to stand the squished ratio in the end.
That's a personal preference of course, but I'd rather deal with the slightly dirtier picture.

Can't i just use the RGB in of the XRGB-3? Will it look worse than only going through the TC1600?Xyga wrote:And the DC will look better through a transcoder, you could use the TC1600 but since it's busy and there's the ratio issue, a VGA to HDMI transcoder would be ideal IMHO.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
you might run into the same problems as with other 480p sources, but give it a try (assuming with RGB you mean 31khz VGA).Can't i just use the RGB in of the XRGB-3? Will it look worse than only going through the TC1600?
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
aren't you running the DC through the 50pro ? This way you get both. Proper sampling and proper AR.That's a personal preference of course, but I'd rather deal with the slightly dirtier picture.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Yes i meant the VGA in on the back of the XRGB-3 named "RGB"Fudoh wrote:you might run into the same problems as with other 480p sources, but give it a try (assuming with RGB you mean 31khz VGA).Can't i just use the RGB in of the XRGB-3? Will it look worse than only going through the TC1600?
I'll give it a try. Haven't looked at it yet. Yeah you're properly right about the 480p sources. I hope i don't need yet another transcoder for that. With all those do dats behind the tv it's beginning to almost look like my old bvm setup (not much space saving).

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Not yet but ultimately I will.Fudoh wrote:aren't you running the DC through the 50pro ? This way you get both. Proper sampling and proper AR.That's a personal preference of course, but I'd rather deal with the slightly dirtier picture.
Actually like spaceape I have a lot of reorganization to do, bunch of cables and switches to buy etc.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Did anyone ever find out more about the 2014 W600B? I realize the input lag measurements aren't on par with the other TVs in this range (although sub-30ms seems good to me), and the panel seems to be from a different source from the W700B. But, the price is getting to be pretty favorable for the 40" this time of year, and I'm not really looking for a display bigger than 42". I'm in the US, where the 42W700B still isn't available. It would take a few hours to drive to Canada, and I'm not looking to make the trip.
I don't really know what difference to expect from 14ms of lag verses 28ms of lag. Should I expect the 600B to have similar picture quality and scaling performance? I could possibly track down a W700B instead but I'm expecting it to run about $200 more. It seems from reviews the extra lag and direct-lit panel are the main differences with the 600B.
Also, to add something to the thread: The W700B is available in the USA now, from Best Buy. But, they only carry the 50" size.

Anybody hear about Sony's 2015 lineup? I've heard a few odd things about 4K TV's, but nothing on 1080p ones.
CES is in January, right?

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Could any owner of the W700 tell me if they think the picture is a tad dark for them? It may just be me, but all of my RGB consoles seem to be a tad darker than I remember when I played them years ago on an SD set via composite. Super Mario Bros., for example, on my RGB-modded top-loader is dreary. What I remember to be a relatively bright blue sky on 1-1 is now indigo.
I think I remember reading that RGB-modded consoles may suffer from a darker picture, so it may not be the TV. I am not sure about that information, though.
Could someone please take a few pics of their screen showing gameplay? I want to see if it's just me. Games on the NES, SNES, and Genesis would help! (And it would also help if you are running those consoles through the Framemeister.)

Don't know if this is related but have you disabled the light sensor and power-saving mode ?
I'm not at home so I cannot check but IIRC you have to go find it somewhere in the system settings (not the picture settings).

Quick question: Is the W605 line shit?
I'm currently eyeing this beauty:

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
No good, it's similar to the 'old' R series, you need at least a W705 to get the famous and unique sub-1 frame lag and good scaling.
EDIT: that one http://www.saturn.de/mcs/product/SONY-K ... ?langId=-3
There's a 50" model too, just replace '42' by '50' in the model name.

How would the KDL50W790B hold up in regards to input lag?. I tried looking to see if there was a 50" version of the W700B but closest I've seen is this one (Rebranded version of the 50w700b?). I know i mentioned earlier back that i was going to get the 42W700b but money has gotten tight intill recently.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Haven't seen that one in Europe, it looks like a 50W7 with added 3D, similar to the current W8.
Though I have never seen Motionflow XR 240 in specs before, does that mean it is limited to max 240Hz for movies/3D ? (the W8 is labeled XR 480).
Really looks like an in-between model (between W700B and W800B)
Lag should be close to the 'basic' W7 but maybe not sub-1 frame, I think Fudoh mentioned the 50W700B had a little more than the 42W7.
AFAIK not one set in the 2014 'W' series from 7 to 9 was reported to have more than 24ms, at least according to websites like hdtvtest, displaylag, rtings, etc, so the W790 most likely is somewhere between 14ms and 24ms.
PS: in Canada the 42W700B, putting aside the 32", should be the lest expensive of all with a $599.99 MSRP.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Last year there was a 50" 3D version of the W6 as well. A friend of mine got that one and it was within 1-2ms range identical to the W6 2D version (I think it was called W680/685 last year), so have little doubts that the W7 3D version should be any different. Funny thing about last year's 50" model: the 2D version was only available in silver over here, while the 3D version was just available in black.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
You're right it resembles the one you mention. Sony models are getting harder to identify lol, the 2014 W range has maybe twice the number of models compared to 2013's.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Ah right on!. Thank you guys for your help, i think i'll give the 50W790B a shot then
. I might be able to get a good price on it as well because of Black Friday coming up. If it ends up only a few ms off then no complaints here. I have the 40" KDL-40V3000 and the 42W700 seems too small for some reason even though it's 2 inches bigger than my current set.
*EDIT* I wish the leo lag tester was cheaper or i'd buy one and let everyone know the input lag on it. Can't justify paying that price only to use it once lol.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
It seems like the Sony 32W700 doesn't have scart connection while the 705/706 do, I figured they were pretty much the same TV except for the color and number, I hope the W700 does have 14-15ms input lag as the 705/706 because I'm going to be buying one soon and I don't see any proper reviews on the w700
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
It should be exactly the same minus the scart connector indeed, since it's a north-American model.
The scart input isn't a great loss since it's not very good on the W series anyway.
Regarding lag, well, I've never read anything about a set performing differently in different regions, only the connectivity, D-tv compatibility and preloaded web services/apps should vary.
One exception sometimes is the panel type (IPS, VA, PVA).
A couple years back panel lottery was still an issue, but not anymore, as long as it's not about second-range brands and dirt-cheap entry level sets.
People are better informed now and 'big' manufacturers can no longer put whatever IPS or VA panels they have in stock inside the same model and ship around the world without a care.
You buy Sony W7 or W8, you get VA.
