NeoGeo Pocket shmups?

Post by zubiac »

Are there ANY beside "Cotton"?
I can't believe that such a great handheld has/had only 1 darn shmup.

oh, and how is Cotton for NeoGeoPocket btw?
good or bad?

thanx in advance

Nope, Cotton is the only one.

It's pretty good actually, amazingly faithful to the arcade original, apart from the low color palette.

Still, unless you're a huge Cotton fan or you really need some shmupping on the go, I think it's better to get the PSX direct port, or the PCE port, which I think is even better than the arcade version due to the better soundtrack.

EDIT: There's the two Metal Slug games for NGPC, of course. Not exactly shmups, but you do get to shoot lots of stuff.

Yeah, I'd probably still have a NGPC if there were a couple more shooters. Cotton and MetalSlugs are great, but the system needed a couple more solid shooters, preferably including Pulstar/Blazing Star Pocket.

Great joystick/pad on the system though; better than any other handheld (and most home consoles).

I'd love to play Pulstar/Blazing Star on NGPC handheld...

Yes, NGPC ports of Pulstar and/or Blazing Star on it would've been ace. ^_~

Perhaps, a homebrewed NGPC shmup title from one of our talented shmuppers into game programming, anyone? (Of course, it would take a PC and a NGP "flash" cart to pull that shmup game stunt off.)

zubiac, I love my Cotton for NGPC, but I doubt it's worth the price it usually fetches-- it's a pretty rare item in my experience. You might have to pay $50 or so to get it these days.

Cotton is f'in terrible. Seriously. Collectors only, as far as I'm concerned. Well, maybe insomniacs too.

Edit: As fun as completely unsupported attacks can be, see the middle part of this old thread for a few actual well-reasoned thoughts as to why this is the case.
