I actually bought it about an hour ago and just played it a minute ago, which is why I'm logging into here for the first time in four months.

Warning Forever had just boss battles too.

I'll try to cover the basics in a nutshell...

First off, yes, the game's pretty much all bosses; the challenge is to keep a "chain" going long enough to make sure they're worth lots of points when you blast 'em (more on that later). Aside from your "regular" shot, you've got your sword, which can damage enemies, but is mainly used to cancel bullets (just about everything except purple-colored bullets can be canceled). The "switch" button switches you between "Order Field" and "Chaos Field" (there's an indicator of which you're in in the upper right corner of the screen) and makes you invincible for a few moments, but can only be used once every few seconds. While in "order," enemies shoot less stuff at you, and give up more items to charge your special attack meter (to be explained in a sec), but your shots are also less powerful. In "chaos," your shots are more powerful, but the enemy shoots more stuff and gives up fewer items, plus one or two more things to follow.

Your other attacks use up one section of the "special attack" meter each time they're used: one is the "lock-on," which spreads out in a certain area (differs with each ship), and (obviously) locks on to stuff and fires homing lasers at it: while in "order field," you can only lock on to enemies and damage them, but in "chaos field," you lock on to (non-purple) bullets, which can both cancel them out and damage enemies nearby. The last attack in the "shield" (forget the exact name, that's what I'll call it :P), which sends out one or more objects (again, depending on the ship you use) which will block (non-purple) bullets for a few seconds, it works the same way in both "order" and "chaos."

This leads to "chaining," the main way to score lots o' points: when you either destroy an enemy or cancel out a bullet with either your lock-on or shield attack, a "hit" counter on the right side of the screen will begin increasing; after a short time it'll vanish if you don't destroy or cancel something again. The "hit" number multiplies the amount of points you get for destroying a boss or boss part; you want to keep on building it up for as long as you can without losing it. To do this you'll have to balance the amount of time you spend in "order" (to get more items to keep the special meter filled) and "chaos" (which has more bullets to cancel and build the meter up). It's not quite as complex as it sounds; just focus on using your special attacks to cancel lots of bullets, and watch how the counter works.

Hopefully this'll give you the basics...if I've made any errors above, feel free to correct me.

I have nothing positive to say about this game...

i can offer the following advice, though, if you find it playable:

forget about the boss time limit. any Iky-esque time bonus you may recieve is ultimately insignificant to the milking potential, primarily with lock-ons.

No unlockables that I know of...though I own the original DC release, not sure if they added anything else to the "expanded" edition...don't recall hearing about any though.

For what it's worth, I consider Chaos Field to be rather underrated...I don't think it's the Best Shmup Ever (tm), but I do think it generally has good stuff to offer if you give it half a chance.

OT, if you have any other Cube shmups, like Ikaruga, or own a Game Boy Player, you ought to pick up one of these controllers:

For whatever reason, they were never released in the US. I love Chaos Field, but my gameplay is on hold until this controller arrives.

Well I'm happy with any US shump release. Chaos field is just a simpler design that Iky. By the way where were those hori pads for GC released because EB doesn't have them.

I just bought this today - I haven't finished the 1st Phase yet, but already I'm enjoying it. I love the swords, & the difference between the Chaos Field & Order Field is insane! I'm not sure why everyone is ragging on this game - I think it's pretty cool. And the music is awesome...

It isn't a bad game, but most shmups released in the past few years have been fantastic. I think this has created inflated expectations.

People looking for a long game won't like it, as the primary goal of the game is a high score and not survival.

I think it's worth getting. Once you understand the game, you begin plotting out ways to use the 'bullet sponge' to keep your combo chain going while you gather more meta stock in the order field, then switch to chaos field and use the lock-on to get massive points... until you run low on meta stock, then you switch to order, and so on... all while avoiding bullet spam.

Quite a fun scoring game, though there are a bunch of shmups (like Ikaruga, Gradius 5, Shikigami No Shiro 2, Mushihimesama, etc) that you should own before buying this.

I just got this game recently and for first impressions, it is a little chaotic as far as what you can do. I find it very difficult (even on Easy Mode) to kill off the bosses, due to the number of bullets to deal with. This is more of a bullet rain game than actually fighting off the enemy.

For a guy who's used to my custom Ikaruga Layout (by that I mean, A button shoots, Y Changes Polarity, X Power Release --GC), can anyone offer some advice for Controller layout for this one, and maybe some general tips on when it's best to use the Sword, Shoot, Fire off a Wing-Layer, or shoot off a Homing Laser? Not to mention when it's a good time to change from Order to Chaos? I had no idea the laser was a Power Shot, so I relied on it too much trying to beat bosses since I had a hard time getting in close on them.

Also, as far as I know the Expanded portions of the game add more smaller enemies than anything else. Anyone else know anything?
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I put the ps2 inside the Neogeo Big Red and it has a 4-button setup...I couldnt figure out if I had enough buttons...It felt like I was missing something. It can be fun if you get into later levels..but the opening level just doesnt blow anyone away. I guess there should be a label on it that says "Boss Battles Only" but that would be confusing to the nonshmup world.

Nah man, everyone here knows what really happened ... choas field came to zweihander's house one night and killed off his entire family. Ever since that day, zweihander is on a mission to avenge his families' death... at least that what i heard around here... could very well be the high score thing as well :)

Thanks for the write-up. I've been playing DC Chaos Field on and off for a few days now, and not understanding Japanese some things confused me. Your post filled in the blanks, and now I'm getting much better scores.

Cheers! :)

Just checked the high score board... sure enough, i've been knocked down. Then again, i stopped caring about the game in the same week that i downloaded it... i had #6 or 7 (somewhere around there) on the high score thread, then shortly after, i realized... "wait a minute... this scoring system BLOWS!"

Seriously, -11 points (out of 10) for Chaos Field, for making Time Bonuses worthless. :/ It goes against everything shmups have taught me, from ESPGaluda's gold-countdown during boss fights, to Ikaruga's time bonus, to Homura's bosses. (who time out after 30 seconds).

But whatever, this'll be the second NGC shmup to hit the US, and beggers can't be choosers. :/

I find the story about Chaos Field killing my family amusing, though.

I've been digging through the forum to find this specific post. Reason for this? I just noticed Zweihanders avatar has changed AND IT CRACKED ME UP!!!

Good times!
