Supergun MAK Strike using composite/s-vid coverter

Post by iast »

I'm looking to grab a supergun in the near future and the MAK Strike caught my eye. Since it only has a SCART connector and I live in the US, my idea was to pair it with a SCART to composite/s-vid converter like this one (http://www.amazon.com/Scart-Composite-S ... B006RBMJ46) so I can play it on a US-made CRT TV. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if that method would work at all. I know it won't be as clear as RGB but as long as it is acceptable enough for playing & recording, I'm considering it.

EDIT: Alternatively, I also noticed a cable-based converter (http://www.amazon.com/Scart-S-Video-Aud ... B000H27UY0), curious if that would work any better.

What you really want to do is spend some time searching for a RGB monitor, or at least a SD tube with component inputs (this will require a probably more expensive RGB to YPbPr component converter - they're not bank-busting though). S-Video is just too bad, so sad.

That said the box you posted should do what you've asked, and as a stopgap measure it should be okay.

Yeah, that's more or less what I'm using it for. As of right now I can only capture composite/s-video. I'll probably get a component setup at some point, but at least the RGB option is already integrated if I ever go that route.

Will that cable I linked be any better or about the same as the box?

Can't comment on the relative merits of the (assuredly very simple) electronics in the cable end - but despite the claims of high quality on the Atlona cable, it is still adding length. You will have to ask yourself whether you need that additional cable length. If you do, that might be a good choice. Otherwise I would keep it simple.

Fair enough.

My last question is that I didn't notice a sync cleaner included with the MAK. If I'm planning to play on a 60hz TV, should I foresee possible issues with the display looking off-sync due to the MAK's native output?

Those Amazon links aren't converters, they are just basic adapters. You won't get S-Video out of them without a proper converter.

Ahh, good catch. I assume a cable option has the same issue?

Correct, same issue. Spend the money and pick up an RGB to YUV/Component converter.

If you really need to stick with S-Video you would need this adapter and figure out how to wire it to the Mak Supergun.

Or pick up a Supergun that already has S-Video.
